Medical Language Specialist - Crystal

Posted: Mar 29, 2012

I graduated as a medical transcription, but after some confusion, I found out I'm really a "Medical Language Specialist"?  Right?  Is there a difference?  I know about Medical Language Editors, but this is a new one on me.  Is that the key to job searching?

Not sure if it has anything to do w/ - job searches, but

I don't see this as an issue. Yes, I used to be called a transcriptionist, but to me, the MLS designation just says that I transcribe and edit VR jobs. Most MTSOs have VR now, so does it really matter?

Thanx. I was job searching under medical transcriptionist. I guess I'm too new or the school just didn't mention it. I read my books, but it was never mentioned there. I do all my transcription with VR, but never sure how to title that. MT w/VR!! I'm definitely not in the know! Yet!

Already an existing field, too. - CDI

What would a Healthcare Documentation Specialist do, exactly? And what value would that have? What is the benefit of that and how does it help facilities stay solvent? Why would a healthcare facility need to hire HDSs?

Answers to those questions help you see what went wrong with MT. It helps you see where MT, and especially AHDI, missed the boat.

Clinical Documentation Improvement is the career field that assists healthcare providers (primarily facilities) to assure that healthcare documentation meets quality standards. This is important from both medicolegal and revenue standpoints. They focus on medical content, which has a direct bearing on patient safety, risk management, utilization, and reimbursement. Google ACDIS to see more about what they do. ACDIS certifies CDI professionals. AHIMA has a new certification for them, too. It is becoming more and more important every day. A similar field works with EHRs to develop documentation applications.

One route to CDI is through coding. Some go through nursing, but they still have to know coding.

MT focuses on typing what the doctor said. It emphasizes formats, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It does not venture into telling doctors what their documentation should or must contain. Think about that . . . is it possible for you to tell a doctor that he needs to document more or differently in order to meet Medicare requirements? Or to tell him that you noticed evidence of a possible complication that was not documented? No. You are just supposed to type what he says.

The MT field has actually gone AWAY from that with the switch to verbatim transcription. It actually moved closer toward a function that VR and spellcheckers perform, rather than away from it. Instead of evolving with the industry, it actually limited roles and boxed the MT into a corner that prevents most MTs from even seeing a new role. It stayed firmly fixed performing the same job it did in 1965.

Thank you for an intelligent and informative post - worth thinking about. NM

Love the titles, they all sound wonderful for a job that pays what I made doing this 20 years ago! I say forget the titles and pay me what is respectable for my hard work!

I believe if you were wanting to title medical transcriptionist who has experience with VR, it would be medical transcriptionist, editor or MT/editor. There is a difference between editing VR and QA editor though, big difference. You have to be careful when applying for jobs, that you dont apply for the QA (quality assurance) editor, its speech editing or voice recognition editing that you have done.

AHIMA came up with the title MLS several years ago in an attempt to further elevate our standing in the medical community. There is no difference between an MLS and a MT. Just a title change.

MT or MLS, the pay is still horrendous. Instead of titles, give me $$!

Okay.....  anyone else having trouble with ASR translating the English language tonight?  For the most part I have pretty good dictators, but for some reason ASR is having trouble recognizing the English language tonight...  I (or anyone for that matter) should not have this much editing on clearly speaking English dictators!!!!!  BUT, on the flip side of that rant....  ASR did actually recognize gabepentin and Ativan in the same document...  I feel like Alice in W ...

Language Transcription

My son is interested in doing translation from Russian to English, or vice versa, from home.  He still has one semester to finish in college, but is fluent.  I know the medical field but not this one.  Is anyone familiar with legitimate websites for this type of work?  There is just too much out there to sort out, and I don't know the critique sites that would be helpful.  I appreciate any information you can give.  Thanks! ...

SR/VR - The Demise Of The English Language
Nov 10, 2012

Once facilities start using VR/SR or having a physician use Dragon/canned reports, they should realize that as long as a report is "medically correct" (i.e., the correct spelling of a medical word) that is as good as the report should be.  Does anybody really think Dr. Jones is going to make a complete coherent sentence as he is dictating; or, Dr. Shaleplcakeeoa (made up name) is going to make a sentence that makes sense in English versus his own interpretation of the English language?  ...

ESL Speaking In English And Native Language???
Jun 10, 2014

For the last several weeks I have been sending reports for a particular MD to QA with lots of blanks.  No problems with other MDs or PAs, just that one.  Found out a couple of days ago that I'm not the only one sending lots of blanks back for the same MD.  Finally got a couple of my QAs back and there was a notation that the facility is working with this MD to take English classes because the blanks have been words/phrases from the native language.  Seriously?!?!  I ...

Spelling/grammatical Mistakes: English First Language
Feb 23, 2013

I have noticed, when interviewing for certain companies, some obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes in the emails I receive from them. While these companies strive for perfection in accuracy (which includes spelling words right and marking possession with an apostrophe, mind you), sometimes it looks like their emails have been written by ESL employees. It's weird that after speaking with some of these people, their writing skills don't match their speaking skills. Maybe I'm j ...

Cpl Rate For QC Specialist

Please don't ask me to read the board.  I have.  I just need a straight, honest answer and no bashing.  I need to know if a cpl line rate is fair for QA.  You have to send feedback, have some MTs on full edit, etc.  I just don't see making any money, but I would like to hear from others who may be doing the same thing.  Thanks a bunch!! ...

Is It Just Me, Or Do The Words Clinical Documentation Specialist Mean
Jun 05, 2015

Ahima certainly gives it a different spin than MT, and an article at Study.com lists desired or common requirements as associate's or bachelor's degree, with nursing, HIM, or health information technology, and medical coding expertise.  So where does Nuance get off expecting "lowly" MTs to do this stuff, with 100% flawless accuracy, on lowly MT pay having to Google everything? I mean, they do not even pay us enough to be "lowly" MTs, and yet expect us to Google and verify that do ...

Oh "Phil" If Only You Truly Understood The English Language
Jan 29, 2015

So I finally decided to submit a remedy ticket about the months coming through not capitalized (have you all noticed this?). I explained that when a complete date is dictated it seems to do fine, but if the month is just used in a sentence, such as "in September" they are not capatlized.  When is a month not supposed to be capitalized?  These used to be correct but for many months now they haven not been.
