Do you get dressed for your day at home working? - curious

Posted: Jan 22, 2010

For years, I NEVER got dressed.  Worked in sweats, pulled my hair back and that was it.  For the past six months or so, I get completely dressed, put on makeup, and for some reason, I feel A LOT better now and enjoy my work more!  That sounds crazy, I agree, but ws wondering how many get dressed to start their day and how many roll out of bed and into the computer chair.  Oh, but I am NOT able to wear shoes though, lol, I can't seem to work my foot pedal with them on:)

dressed 4 work - old mt

I usually get dressed in jeans or sweats, comfortable stuff - however, shoes - never and to go to town I put on the bra!! LOL -

LOL. I can relate. "The bra." He,he,he.

I roll out of bed - and into my chair

at 0455 a.m., start typing at 0500. I don't want to get up any earlier than that! lol I take a shower later on in the day when I take a break.

me too!! - no mess.

The only time I wore PJ's for work was... - Chickenlover

when I used to be on call and would get paged in the middle of the night for a stat. Man I miss those days--THAT was darned good payola.

I work 2nd shift but am up at dawn anyway for chores, then hit the gym, then back home to dink around doing whatever, then down for a nap before work, then back up and dressed, always looking mildly "not terrifying" just in case someone stops by ;-) So that means at least foundation on for makeup and hair kept as tidy as a white chick with an afro can keep it.

I Now get dressed - MargoMT

I used to roll out the bed, walk down the hall into my office, sit in my chair and start typing away. What made me change was, my hubby made a comment that I looked the same in the evening when he got home! Well, I said to myself, I know that is not a compliant. So I do get dressed now, I get up an hour earlier get dressed and I feel much better. In the evening though when hubby gets home, I try to change my clothes, take another shower and I am ready for the evening. I can tell my hubby appreciates the effort, plus it makes for feel better overall.

I got into the horrible habit of not getting dressed. I was depressed and having panic and anxiety attacks and looked it. With treatment, Zoloft and Xanax (woo hoo!) and counseling, I feel much better, back to my old self. (my counselor says it's very common when people are away from social contact to become anxious and depressed, just to let anyone who's feeling yucky...)

I got into the routine of treating working from home like a "real job" (I know that sounds silly, because it IS a job, but I really was in a bad place not too long ago). Now I get up, shower, get coffee, breakfast, get dressed and do my hair and face, and get to work. That routine takes me about 30 minutes to an hour and I'm in my office chair by 8:30 a.m.

It really eliminates being caught by surprise, like if I have to go to the store, run an errand for momma or need to get out, 'cause I'm ready!

It was REAL important for me to establish a routine and make myself presentable. My mood is definitely reflected in my appearance! I feel better now, and I'm more presentable to the outside world. LOL!

Thank you for sharing about the depression Steevy! - Chickenlover

[ In Reply To ..]
You made a VERY important point about that. It affects a lot of work-at-home MTs, new and old, and there is treatment out there.

I don't have any health insurance, have to pay out of pocket, made too much money to qualify for any "free" care. However, my doctor was very helpful in scoring free samples for me of an antidepressant, as well as looking into those $4 prescriptions through places like Walmart.

Some days it was hard to find the strength to breathe, and at one point I was staring down the barrel of a .22 rifle, trying to figure out how to put my toe on the trigger and not flinch and mess it up...so I can relate to anyone who is going through depression.

I also feel better when I get dressed.... - another anxious one that feels better now

[ In Reply To ..]
I do check e/m and straigten my area while the kids get ready for school. Type for about an hour (usually to let the hot water heater catch up-LOL), and then get showered and dressed usually in jeans and a nice top. But some days that hour in the a.m. turns into 2 hours, but I am still getting dressed every day. When my hubs works his nights into the late evening, I guess I kind of do look like when he left that morning, but by about 10 p.m. I am back in my jammies to wind down. I pretty much type and jump up and type and jump, run errands, type, fix dinner, type, do laundry, type, you get the picture! LOL - I don't really mind the inconsistencies in my day. I would rather get up and live a little during the day even if that means having to type into the evening. It all works out in the end.

I can't wear shoes; just warm socks - another anxious one that feels better now

[ In Reply To ..]
I can't seem to work my foot pedal with shoes! haha! But I wore shoes for 17 years, although once clogs became popular, I used to slip it off at work under my desk and use my foot pedal with my stocking foot! lol

Truth to tell, I don't wear PJs at all, but my office - MissIndigo

[ In Reply To ..]
is in the front of the house by the porch, so I always do get dressed to work. My personal contribution to neighborhood gentrification. :)

I work comfortable - icytoes

[ In Reply To ..]
There is no need to get dressed for work when you work at home, but basically it's a personal preference. If that makes you feel good then fine. I wear not sweats, but they are made of...dang, can't think of the name of the material...Fleece, that's it. Its a pretty color and looks presentable if I have to answer the door. Also warm socks (my feet are always cold), so I go for soft, warm, and comfortable. Personally I get more work accomplished when I am comfortable. Wearing sweats or PJs do not make one lazy and dressing up does not make one more productive. It's all a matter of personal choice.

Makeup - the last time make-up touched my face was 5 years ago when I went home for my mom's funeral. Truth be told it drove me crazy and my face itched like crazy. I tried once after that again, but my skin felt like it was being suffocated. Now I don't care if the public sees me with a splotchy face when I go to the store.

You sound like me - EagleEye

[ In Reply To ..]
I have come to hate make-up the older I get. When I do use it I can't wait to wash it off after I come home from where ever I had to go. The older I get it seems the less I really give a rip about wearing the stuff. I'm not out to impress anyone myself. But again, for those who do like to wear it, whatever floats your boat.

Never. lol. - Emily

[ In Reply To ..]
i get up, let my dogs out, make some hot chocolate (in the winter) and walk down the hall, sit down and start working. A couple of hours later I take a shower, but then I get back into my "comfy clothes". The only time I ever get ready is if I am going grocery shopping, or out for the day or whatever, and then of course on weekends if Im going out. but, i really like to get right to work honestly. I just feel like i spend so much time getting ready, it's almost irritating, but i have to wear makeup :)
so no normally i put my hair in braids and wear sweatshirts/sweat pants. now if i was trying to impress someone, it might be different, but for now it works!! :)

Sometimes... - Jode

[ In Reply To ..]
It depends on the day. Most of the time I make my coffee, get the kids out the door and on the bus, and go right to the computer. I only work part-time, so I will get my work done usually by noon to 2:00 p.m., then shower and get on with the rest of the day. But I do agree I feel more "with it" if I get cleaned up and dressed before sitting down to work. Wish I were ambitious enough to do that every day! Along that same line, do most of you let your housework sit until the work is done or do you get up and do some here and there mixed in with work? I will throw laundry in while I work, but the dishes and other cleaning usually wait until later in the day.

Another second shifter... - cindyoh

I'm usually up around 7 a.m., get the coffee on, get dressed and yeah, a little makeup. I try to get outdoors and walk a bit almost daily no matter what the weather (my sure cure for depression, don't want pills) and/or run errands, cook, clean, you get the picture, anything that requires moving unless I'm dead tired. I seem to need a nap in the recliner lately if there's time before I start work at 3:30 p.m. Some nights it can be hard to keep my eyes open till I can quit at midnight, but I know not to break to jump in the shower or put the PJs on, real hard to stay awake then. I'd never work in the PJs even if I worked day shift but to each her own.

yes, always, as if going to work, PJ is for the bed, only,..nm - .

NO WAY, NO HOW, NOT ME - EagleEye

[ In Reply To ..]
No, I do not get up and get dressed. I've been there and done that when I worked in a hospital med rec department several years ago. To me that is part of the freedom of working at home. No dress codes, no fuss, no muss. If I don't feel like brushing/styling my hair right away I don't have to, not to mention I can sit around in my sweats, shorts or pajamas - depending on the season. I usually take a shower at night or before I go somewhere. I don't use make-up unless I know I am going somewhere to run errands before or after work, etc. But, I don't sit around the house wearing it - it's a waste of time and cosmetics to me.

I do get up and wash my face and brush my teeth every morning simply because I feel more awake after doing that.

I guess it's "To each his own" as they say. Whatever works for you.

true! If I stay in my PJ I crawl right back into bed, esp.if my husband is still in it..nm - .

Absolutely (sm) - Long time MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been telecommuting since 1996. I DO get up every morning, shower, wash and blow dry my hair, put on makeup and dress in jeans and a shirt or sweater, depending on weather. There have been a couple of very rare days when I did not do that, and I felt icky all day. I think it really makes a difference psychologically to be dressed for work. Oh, but like the other poster, I cannot wear shoes while I work.

There are different definitions of "dressed" - I Type Naked

But generally, no I do not.

Working From Home?
Dec 01, 2009

Hello,   Im just finishing up a medical transcription course/certification program with Allied schools, and I was wondering if there are any of you MT's working from home or are most of you working in a hospital?  Also have any of you done the online certifications and if you did how did you get some experience under your belt to help you with the job?  I was a veterinary technician for years, so I sort of knew what I was getting into, but it has turned out to be a little mo ...

What I Don't Like About Working At Home Right
Mar 02, 2010

now is that I would really love to tell somebody off!! Yes, I know that may sound childish, but this company has put my stress level through the roof, my blood pressure through the roof, and their BS has me so pissed off, if I were in an office where they were I would find great satisfaction in letting them have it verbally, not in writing.  Yes, I would be fired on the spot, but it would be so worth it.  It's just not the same when they don't have to face someone in person.& ...

Working At Home
Mar 09, 2010

Everyone says "I would love to work from home".  Working from home has been having negative effects on me.  I've been doing this for 12 years.  I never used to have anxiety or depression.  Now, I do.  This job is so isolating.  I'm sick and tired of staying home in my PJs.  I try to get out of the house as much as possible, but little trips to the grocery store is not cutting it.  I get depressed staying home all the time.  I lack a social l ...

Getting In A Rut Working From Home
Mar 06, 2012

Becoming pretty much inactive, get up, login and work. Get off, turn on the TV and lay down or maybe spend a few hours on your favorite website. As far as making meals, they are far and few between because you eat in between working, breaks or just grab something totally unhealthy when you get off. Can go a couple of days without showering, lounging in pajamas, maybe groom and fix up once a week to go out for errands. House hold chores suffer because of lack thereof. My bedroom is a t ...

Anyone Take An Outside Job After Working At Home For Years?
Jan 28, 2010

A month or so ago, I sent a resume for a medical/legal transcription position locally and forgot all about it until they called today! Questions About Working From Home
Feb 04, 2011

I have a few questions about working from home.  I have a full-time job as a transcriptionist for a hospital, but I have recently applied to a company to do transcription from home, part-time.  I get paid an hourly wage at my job, but the company pays by the dictated minute, and I am not sure if it is a good wage.  They have a minimum requirement of 200 dictated minutes per week, and the pay is $1.15 per dictated minute.  If anyone who works from home could let me know if thi ...

Working With A New Baby At Home....

Hi all :)   I wondered if I might be able to get some advice from those of you who have worked from home with a new baby.  My baby was born in February and I'm due to start back to work soon.  I have an older boy, but I worked outside the home with him.  My baby is breast fed, which makes me wonder about how you handled frequent feedings.  Also, I wanted to know what you used if you needed to keep typing but be able to hold the baby as well.  I thought I would ...
