? ABOUT PAYING TAXES AS AN IC VS. AN MTSO EMPLOYEE. - FUTURE MT

Posted: Jul 29, 2011

I am trying to decide whether to work as an MTSO employee or an IC. If I choose IC, what percentage of self-employment, FICA, Social Security, and Medicare taxes will I be paying on (on the average) on my gross monthly income?

I know that ICs make more cpl, but will the taxes I pay be more and, therefore, not worth it?

Your input would be greatly appreciated!

about 35% - nm

25% - mt2

And if you have a spouse who is paying taxes, unless you're earning huge amounts, you could do less.

15% self-employment tax alone, looks like ICs are no longer making much more - pay down to 8 cpl or less

May I make a suggestion? The smartest thing you can do is to schedule an hour with a CPA. Pay him or her for their time and have a list of questions ready to go. The CPA can explain the benefits of each classification, as well as the obligations of each. It is the best investment you will ever make. Good luck!

10.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare in 2011 (sm) - KLil

That is your self-employment tax. The Social Security tax was lowered 2% the first of this year since they are doing away with the pays to work credit. If you are an employee, you pay half of that by payroll deductions and your employer pays the other half. The actual tax you pay on your income would depend on your filing status and deductions.

The MTSO pays half SS and Medicare, which is 15%, so they will pay 6.5% - and you will pay

6.5% when an employee. As an IC, you will pay the whole 15% (self-employment tax), plus you have your state and fed taxes to take care of. So the person above has figured 15% SI tax and 25% for state and federal making it 40% for taxes as an IC. Don't forget as an IC you also get to withhold various things for your taxes.

sorry, 7.5% not 6.5% - my bad

The thing to remember is your employer contributes only one-half of your social security tax (7.5%) All other taxes are paid by the employee whether you are an employee or an IC.

IMO - Not worth it - anon

It is a nightmare dealing with the IRS and SE taxes. I hate it. I would love to get out of the IC game but haven't been able to find an MTSO with enough work to get out of the IC game.

This industry is soul crushing at the moment. In my humble opinion

I agree, struggling to make the mortgage and feed 2 kids with no work - ready to get out of it altogether

IC versus employee - Employee better but..

[ In Reply To ..]
I am doing both. I am not making any money as an employee but need what little benefits there are. I am making more money as an IC and being kept very busy working. As an IC I am not waiting for the work which is what I need to pay the bills. MTSO's overhire for accounts, which means little work and no money to pay the bills.

Filing Taxes As IC And As Employee
Feb 21, 2013

I work 20 hours a week as an IC for a national MTSO, paying my own taxes.  I also work 40 hours a week as an employee with benefits at a university.  Which federal form(s) should I use to file my own taxes?  I would use a 1040 for the full time employee job if that was my only job.  But since I also work half time as a contractor, do I need a different form?  Two separate forms?  Thanks so much for any help you can offer.  ...

MTSO's - Why Do None Of You Ever Post Your CPL You Are Paying
Dec 31, 2013

Seriously.   Why do you withhold this information?   Would it not make more sense to post that right at the start so people know if they are even willing to test with you? It wastes your time, doesn't it, to review tests and resumes if your pay rate is not acceptable to people?    Or it wastes someone else's time to grade the tests,  then wastes the hiring person's time to review the information and make an offer if someone knows they won't ...

MTSO Getting Full Price And Paying 4 To MT
Jan 05, 2010

I just got a solicitation that an MTSO in Florida is for sale. It gives a breakdown of their accounts (not by name)showing how much they are charging the provider and how much they are paying the MT. For VR, they are getting 11 to 11.5 cpl and only paying the MT 4 cpl. FYI ...

Income Taxes/statutory Employee Question
Feb 27, 2014

I was one of the people originally with MDI who was sold to Transcend who was sold to Nuance. With MDI, we were statutory employees. When sold to Transcend, we were told repeatedly and often that statutory employee would no longer exist, that we were straight employees. Same with Nuance. Yet my pay stubs say statutory employee and zero federal tax was withheld all year; however, the statutory employee box on the W2 is not checked. So what does this mean? How is it legal to be told we are straig ...

Info Needed From Anyone Who Reported MTSO For Not Paying Overtime Please.
Oct 17, 2010

What was the process you went through?  I would guess you most likely would contact the labor board.  Was that your state or the state of the MTSO main office?  I would think they would ask for my timesheets, which I have kept.  Did you mail things to an address the labor board gave you and deal with one investigator? What was the outcome of your case?  How long did it take to get the matter resolved and receive your back pay for all the overtime? I know I pr ...

Tax Question. I Got Done Working For A Small MTSO Last January But She Was Late In Paying Me The La
Dec 26, 2009

so I did not get the checks until sometime in January/Feb.  She never sent my 1099 on time when I worked for her so I doubt I will even get one this year unless she decides to say she paid me more than she really did (which I would not put past her).  Do I have to claim the money she paid me in 2009 even though I should have received it in 2008??  With the two paid in 2009 that should have been paid in 2008 ($488.25) and the two that were supposed to be paid in 2009 ($418.25).&nbs ...

MTSO/Employee Status With United Healthcare Insurance?
Sep 08, 2010

Does anyone know of any services who hire employee status and that offer United Healthcare insurance (besides MQ!)?  I have a job as an IC that used to be full-time and has now dwindled down to part-time.  I'd like to keep this part-time and find an employee status full-time job just for the insurance and to help with the taxes.  Most of them won't even tell you until you've applied, sent your resume, tested, and then IF they make you a job offer they tell you what ...

Anyone Ever Pay Monthly Taxes For Taxes Owed
May 12, 2014

I owed a bit of money for last years taxes, which I do not have so am making monthly payments.  I sent in the form to request to pay monthly, but have not heard anything back.  Has anyone done this and is this unusual (that I have not heard back anything)?  I was reading all these websites and they were saying just keep mailing in what you can each month until it's paid off and then you might owe penalties, which I understand.  It stinks, but right now I have more bills ...

IC Taxes
Jun 13, 2012

I have been an employee since the start of my career and never had to worry about taxes.  For some time I have been entertaining the thought of taking an IC position on the side, but then I was told that as a self-employed person I would be carrying 35% tax liability.  That scared me out of my wits.  I am sure this does not apply literally, but I want to know how things would pan out for an IC who earns $45,000 in a calendar year.  How would you break things up as expenses in ...

Re PTO Taxes, Breaks
Jul 03, 2012

ok here's the dirt from payroll. If you are paid a lump sum such as PTO, the IRS  considers it "supplemental" and taxes it at 25%! So, if you're considering leaving, best to take all the PTO you have before. Wish I would have known that before. As far as paid breaks, I didn't realize it was "state" dependent...so thanks for that information. Cudos for KY this time requiring a break after 4 hours.  Either way, it would not have mattered to me as I took a break whenev ...
