Very Worried about Gulf Coast Transcription - Tired and MT

Posted: Jul 06, 2013

They have terminated some office/administrative people and now have eliminated weekend incentives and given pay CUTS to transcriptionists.  Work is nearly non-existent.  At the beginning of the summer they said it was a temporary slow down and would pick up shortly.  Instead it seems to be getting worse.  Anyone know anything??

I really really like this company and hate to see this happening.

It is - simple

Jump ship!!! You do understand your liking/hating does not matter? When you are seeing all the signs, take actions.

doesn't sound good, I'd line up something on the side - just in case. sm

whatever happens - they're losing this, losing that...LOSING. They sound like they are in trouble. Just line up something else part time just in case the bottom falls out and wait out the storm. See what happens. If the sun comes out eventually, you'll be regarded as loyal and you'll be happy with them like before. Side job will help you survive it all.

I know nothing about this company, good or bad, but from a business point of view, it has the appearance of either being in financial trouble or preparing for a sell-out/merger. Just my guess, but if I were in your shoes, I would start looking and have a Plan B just in case. Good luck to you and your fellow workers.

Merger? Sell out? - Ghostpepper

Merger or sell out? Really? They only have that one account. What would they sell? The office chairs perhaps? Yeah, I'm sure M-Modal and Nuance are in dire need of some good desks and office chairs. Just stop it people. We all know that being an MT is a dying profession. Heck, they are not even offering the medical transcription courses at the local community colleges anymore around here and I am in the upper midwest where medical transcription was the job of choice for many women because of the weather during the winter. Best to think about going to work being a Scribe for a physician and creating his/her reports for them. Would mean you would have to leave home daily and you can't sit around eating bon bons and gossiping on MTSTARS. Who knows? Might even lose a couple pounds. Stop wringing your hands and moaning. I'm sure those people in the GCT office are just as concerned as we are. I mean really. Some of them might have to go back to being an MT until the bottom falls completely out. That would be a horrible scary thought. Personally I think they've been honest with us. As long as we can get a good recommendation (if we deserve it) to get on with another company until the bottom falls out there too. It's just a sign of what's happening in this business. Get used to it.

They are all - On their way out, which...

This is how MM and Nuance end up with the "nice" places. They buy up all the stock (or just buy up, period) and that is that.

It's been happening for years, so...I finally got out of MT. Got sick and tired of worrying about the next company getting swallowed up by the big baddies.

You can run, but you can't hide.

What might be happening is what is happening here - In-House Lead

I'm the lead at a medium-sized system in another part of the country. What you're experiencing is what is currently happening to the MTSO to whom we've outsourced. We are often out of work now, including during this holiday weekend (UNHEARD OF).

The reason: We are rolling out Epic. The doctors do still have the option to dictate, but the administrators are watching them. The ones who are deemed the "high-volume dictators" (i.e., doing it the old way) are being counseled. Their goal is to eliminate as much $$$ transcription as possible.

The scary thing is we have only just begun with Epic. Won't be at full implementation for another 6 months.

Our MTSO knows this, but they aren't saying anything to the MTs because they are still needed until such time as they are no longer needed.

It's a cruel, dying industry with no safety net underneath you. I suggest strongly you go back to school.

P.S. and by the way - In-House Lead

We are the last hospital system in this part of the country to go to Epic. (There are some small solo community hospitals who haven't made the switch, because they can't afford it.)

See message - BTDT

I work for a smallish MTSO that provides services to what is considered a "large" hospital but in a very small state. So far this hospital and its satellites are refusing to implement any type of VR or Epic-type system.

So far. I'm hoping for the best but, as the saying goes, prepared for the worst (the inevitable as I've no doubt this hospital will start feeling the pressure to convert soon).

The same thing happened to me. I had a wonderful job, great company, then my account went to EPIC. No work.

when transcription companies had offices, before working at home was the norm, I used to say when the company cuts back on paying for coffee, they were in trouble. This company is in trouble. In the future they will probably be bought out by one of the big two.

Gulf Coast Transcription (GCT). Question...
Aug 19, 2013

Someone asked about them and I am bringing it back up to the top.  One person said it all now VR, another said they saw their only account in the "Nuance pool."  I don't get it.  First of all, what is a Nuance Pool?  I work for them and although work has slowed down, if Nuance was now contracting, wouldn't the work be completely gone?  Also as for all VR, it's about half and half.  We are hoping the summer slow down will end soon and work will pick up ...

Gulf Coast Transcription - Nearing The End?
Dec 19, 2013

It appears that Gulf Coast has either severely cut the hours, or laid off most of their IC transcriptionists.  I was laid off.  This was a nice company to work for, and I would really feel bad for them, but they told us things that just weren't true since last summer when they started losing work.  Plus they appeared to deny the rumors on this website back in September.  Then we got a really nasty email from the main supervisor a couple months ago all about how they were ...

Has anyone tested with them? Here's their testing process if you're interested......it's a hoot! I got a Word document which asked me to supply the correct spellings. So, maybe I have set myself up to be worried.  I have read so much bad stuff about TTS.  I just started a job there and haven't had any trouble thus far, so I can't vouche for the complaints I have read.  Are there any other current TTS employees out there that enjoy working there?  I have never ran out of work.  I can't speak for getting paid on time yet because my first payday isn't until this weekend. So far, all I can say is good things. They wer ...

Worried
Jan 26, 2015

It seems like more transcription is being offered for in-house rather than IC at home jobs. Tonight I went online and put 'work at home medical transcription jobs' and after going through all the transcription school ads, I only found 2 companies hiring for at home work, the others were all in an office or hospital setting.  It seems as though the demand for going in-house is getting greater every day.  Because of my blind Schnauzer, I need to be at home for those times when ...
