Needless to say, I will not be working for them. When I come across doctors who actually care to slow down and speak clearly, that will be the right company for me. I swear I understood about every fifth word these awful dictators said. And they were not ESL!! Very irritating!

.... so you are saying that you have been in the industry longer than the rest of us and you have typed doctors who stop and go slow so you, the transcriptionist, can understand them clearly and not have to figure some things out? Give me a break! Think I'm a troll if you want to, if that makes you feel better, but in reality I am an MT like you who just is simply amused that you would think any company would offer you to type dictators who are clear as a bell. I have not seen the test you took but really, come on, your post saying that you would only work for a company where doctors care to slow down is just laughable ... and needed to be replied to.... get a new career fast ....

Being in this field for many years, I have had doctors who speak very slowly and clearly, doctors who speak as if they have marbles in their mouths, or as if they're trying to catch a bus. Being tested on a Doctor Speedy Gonzalez is never easy, but unfortunately, it's the nature of the beast. You're going to have dicators who speak slowly, quickly, with foreign accents, who whisper, yawn, and belch, among other things. I can still sympathize, though. I know that has to be hard when you're testing for a job. I really don't think it's asking too much for some of these dictators to slow down a bit, but I also know that's not likely to happen. Should a company not work for doctors, hospitals and clinics UNLESS their doctors promise to speak clearly and slow down? This MT who says she has been in the industry longer than most of us and calls me a troll thinks that she will find the right company when she finds the right doctors and my thoughts are... find a new occupation as you will not find a company where there are not fast talking doctors, so why not aspire to get better skills rather than bashing the doctors and saying that you will not work for companies that have difficult dictators?

You get tested to see how you react and handle the test. Obviously, you'd be an MT who couldn't handle every (or most every) dictator so they are better off not adding you to their arsenal.

Like the poster below, I think you're full of beans if you think doctor's are going to slow down just so the MT doesn't have to work as hard. I'm not a troll either and the other poster was simply injecting some reality into this obvious dream you're having.

Fast dictators, cruddy dictators, foreign dictators, eating, traffic, etc, these are all part of life of the MT.

Keep looking, perhaps you'll find nirvana.

Fast/cruddy dictators are a big part of the business, and it does take time to get used to them, no matter how experienced you are going in. Just because she had trouble with a test, this does not necessarily mean she'd be an MT who couldn't ever handle every, or most every, dictator. Testing basic knowledge is understandable, but it's quite ridiculous to be tested with a yawning or whispering dictator, LOL. You get used to the difficult ones, but it does take time.

To the original poster, don't listen to the naysayers here if this is what you really want to do. (You'll find plenty of naysayers here.) Keep plugging away. It'll take time, but you'll find your "nirvana".

Your experience is showing.

A company must know if a perspective employee has the experience to handle all types of dictation (the real world) and that is what the testing is all about. If you cannot pass the test, they are right not to hire you if experience and proficiency with all types of dictation is what they need. If you find that perfect situation where all the dictators speak perfectly, please let us know. In the meantime, you might want to look at other jobs outside of MT to keep you going until that fantasy job comes along. Thanx for the laugh anyway and good luck, sounds as if you are going to need it.

I don't know if doctors like that even exist! No wait, I did have one doctor who was the best dictator ever and guess what, she had been a transcriptionist while going to med school. I swear, if they made all the medical students take one little class where they had to listen to and transcribe each others dictations it would make such a difference. I actually suggested that once to a hospital I worked at, that the interns and residents do that and I was told they had more important things to do. That is the attitude that is the problem! Don't they realize that it DOES affect patient care and safety??? (that was a rhetorical question, of course).

I'm getting so tired of having a report or two, then NJA, then while waiting another report comes, then NJA, etc., etc., early in my shift. Sure, we have been encouraged to just check back later on and work then. I really don't know why they suggest or even allow this to happen. I am sick to death of typing on accounts not in my BOB! This is the 4th one already and I am only an hour into my shift. There are no samples in the repositry, there are no jobs that come up under the dictator look up feature... I keep stuffing down the Tums, wondering why in the heck I was forced to do weekend hours when there is no work in my accounts on the weekend. I HATE THIS. How do you all do it? Who put me in this "helper pool" in the first place? ...
