Is age a factor in not finding an MT job? - perturbed MT

Posted: Mar 31, 2014

Have any of you had a hard time finding work as an MT because of age discrimination?  I have run into this for the very first time this year.  I have not worked for a few months because they laid off a lot of MTs at the company I worked for; mainly because they promised something they could not give.  We would have 4 or 5 accounts and no work on almost all of them.  We would be left scrambling for work and got the worst work possible.  The supervisor at night watched the work come in and she took her pick of the good jobs.  I could not live like that and when I asked if the accounts would get any better she said, of course!  Because I had over 30 years experience and was well qualified to do whatever I was given, I was the first to go.  Then, I really had trouble finding work.  I am 68 years of age, of sound mind and really know the MT field.  I can work as fast as some much younger than myself, and I have submitted my resume to so many places at this point.  A lot of the places you submit work to had also had over 400 applicants for the very same positions I was applying for.  I think they would rather take someone you is very young, is still learning, and working their way up the ladder.

If anyone knows of a company that is hiring, please let me know.  I am so sad that this is happening.  I still have bills to pay and a husband that is ill...I don't need insurance.  Thanks everyone!

I think age matters - in face to face

but I don't give any clues about my age when applying on line. I give the past 15 years of work experience. Any more is overkill. Do you give too much information when you apply? Otherwise I think there are so many seeking work that the biggest factor is luck.

Age - anon

I'm your age and currently working. My resume has the dates from college up through the present, so the math is there for anyone to do. Although age discrimination is illegal, I think it is rampant when you work in-house, and not really a factor for remote work. You don't have to be younger than everyone else, you just have to be better! Don't give up!

Perturbed, check this out... - anon

Check out AARP. They have job tips and give lots of information about where to find jobs for our age range. You've got great experience. That's something worthwhile to a lot of employers out there... Wish you the best...

Age discrimination has not been a problem - 3 more months as an MT

for me when looking for MT work. I wanted to get out of the MT field and discovered it is a very real issue. Employers don't care about your work ethic. They care how young you look. Thirty years ago when I would apply for a job, I would get it. Now I can't even get an interview. I have the same sparkling personality as I did 30 years ago, but my face reflects age. I never thought years ago I was getting a job over someone else because of my age, now I realize that was it. It is not a new issue. It is just one I realized when it affected me. Also, I have tried to get minimum wage jobs I so much want out of MT. Now since they can weed out the undesirable (old) through internet applications, I never get an interview. They find out your age by asking what year you graduated high school and specifically say not college. What other reason would they have for that but to check your age.

I got my present job when I was in my high - 60s and I mean the high ones.

Now over the 70 mark and still around. I applied at a place where I knew the contract they had just gotten, told them I knew it well, hired and that was several years ago. Never asked about age, might have filled out a form but with this older age have forgotten if I did. I might, might quit one of these days.

I think it is in many cases. Older MTs know the score. - We know the payscale is exploitive. -SM-

We're onto a lot of the tricks these companies pull to cheat us out of what we should rightfully have earned.

Also, those that still offer health insurance are likely having a LOT of pressure put on them NOT to hire older (and more likely to use their benefits) workers. Just another cost-cutting measure for both of them.

I also had sort of a reverse-discrimination thing happen: I was hired for an onsite job that only lasted about half a year before everyone was laid off. Most of the MTs there were 62+, and I think they felt most of us would apply for Social Security soon after being laid off.

You just can't win in this country, especially if you're old enough that they no longer consider you a cash cow anymore (young enough to keep working and paying higher income taxes to support the government's lavish lifestyles.)

Yes it is and yes i am - sib

I got laid off from previous job on 11/4. I was told they lost the account I was working, but I believe is was because of my age (66). I have sent resumes, and still looking for a job. the mtso's think when you reach retirement age your brain automatically becomes stupid and you become frail.

Thanks to everyone - "Older" MT

Thanks to everyone that posted. I agree with all of your comments and I so appreciate the kindness in each comment. I am 68 years old and don't feel anywhere near my age, and feel I can still do well in this field:) It has definitely been a little depressing to experience this, and I believe it is happening every day. When you see our medical reports being transcribed by foreign MTs, and see the gross errors in the reports, I wonder why I cannot get a job with all of my experience. I guess they want quantity and not quality. Our MTs have had their jobs stolen from them and are suffering financially because of this. I really want to go back to my profession. Thanks everyone again...you are all great:)

I'm 71 and feel the same way-- I can DO this job but can't get hired - n/m
