Knee MRI finding - sm

Dictated: MRI reported as positive for minimal s/l truckation (truh-KAY-shun) of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus, possibly secondary to prior injury. No displaced meniscal fragment was identified.

I was thinking "truncation" (shortening), but does that fit in context? I have not heard with regard to menisci before.

A quick way to check what you heard is to type all or part of the sentence into Google. (i.e., "truncation of posterior horn, medial meniscus".)

Often if it's correct, you'll get a lot of results, medical reports, etc. Of course that doesn't guarantee it's 100% correct, but then, no search result on Google is guaranteed. Still, if you have 1,000,000 hits with the same phrase, as opposted to only 5,000 for instance, then you can be pretty sure your answer is correct. If nothing else, it can help you to find the correct spelling (such as if you had typed in "trukation" of the posterior horn. It would have probably asked if you meant "truncation". Your result could then be double-checked in a medical dictionary if you're still not sure.

I didn't think to type in all or part of the sentence, just like we do here when asking for help. It makes perfect sense and did indeed answer my question -- and another one I had on a different report later.

I have been transcribing for 31 years. Hospital laid us off in 2008, went with our contract provider, then Nuance took over her employees.
