Gen Transcription on the Job Seeker's board - anon

Is my math wrong? .50 an audio minute = $30 an hour.  As mentioned in the ad, an hour of focus group transription "only takes you 4 hours to transcribe".  So they are offering $7.50 an hour?!

yes, that is right! - MTtoMA

[ In Reply To ..]
That is very low. I did focus group/interview and 911 audio 4 years ago and started at 65.00/audio hour, which went up as my experience with each type went up.

And that's $7.50 at BEST -- want to bet how much of the audio - is, in fact, GOOD QUALITY?

[ In Reply To ..]
That is one SERIOUS ripoff. They expect the earth, on an AS-NEEDED basis, for under (probably way under) minimum wage.

Yes as an IC. You would probably make more picking up - me

[ In Reply To ..]
cans along the side of the road for 4 hours. I think the job offer is a joke. If there was a guarantee of a consistent amount of work it might be ok for some extra pocket money, but "as needed" and "good quality" are red flags.

And the pay is through Paypal - smh

[ In Reply To ..]
which costs fees to use, sometimes. It is laughable that a person can give this long list of requirements when asking a person to work for less than minimum wage.

I laughed at "takes ONLY 4 hours..." - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
they will get what they pay for. I do legal transcription and the company just hands out interviews and hearings to anyone - they are the worst when they are turned in. You can't just wing it. So many missing words, wrong words, etc. And this is good audio! My company just started doing these and charges by the WORD which is a total ripoff!!! Minimum for any general/legal is $1.00 min for 2 speakers and it goes up from there depending on how many people/audio quality. And the company I work for does medical and they also only charge by the word - one-half cent by the word... no spaces = laughable!!

I think that ad is disgusting and a ripoff. - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
You would be lucky to make minimum wage. Come on. I pay my housekeeper $20/hour and meals.

you can afford a housekeeper? - lucky you!

[ In Reply To ..]
I WISH I could afford a housekeeper. How do you do it on the wages we receive? Must have a wealthy spouse and don't really need to do this work.

Yes, I can afford a housekeeper - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
I entered this field in 1968, worked my tail off (16-20 hours a day sometimes, 7 days a week sometimes), planned well, worked hard, had a professionally-written business plan, paid my bills and obligations on time, treated associates/employees fairly, and would not play the games when the big nasty corporations came in. In short, I paid my dues. I began in 1968. I fully retired 18 months ago. You do the math--I'm a genuine dinosaur! I invested my life, my time, my money, my integrity, and was extremely fortunate. So, yes, I can afford a housekeeper, and I am grateful to be able to do so. I am also mindful (and sad) that no matter how hard those starting out today work,no matter how much intelligence they have, how good their intentions or even how good their school was, they will never have the advantages that I had or that others of my MT generation had. The train has left the station. And that just makes me sad. Yes, technology is wonderful. It is much easier to do a cut and paste than to retype a whole block of copy. It is much easier to use the delete key than Wite-Out. (Does the younger generation even know what Wite-Out is?) I am a great fan of the BlackBerry, the iPod, and all of those other razzle-dazzle things. (I am a closet geek myself.) On the other hand, I fear what so much access to techology has done to our humanity. From where I sit, it looks to me like the corporations won and the little guys and gals (and I count myself among the "little people" figuratively if not literally) have been taken to the cleaners. Do you think the fat cats at MQ cared when they devoured the small businesses of small MTSOs who weren't interested in Wall Street, but rather in people, including their MTs? No. None of those large corporations care, and that is why we have people working for 3 cpl and fearing foreclosure. This has turned into a long answer to a simple question. I guess my bottom line is that perhaps my greatest blessing in MT is that I got out when I did, and my heart aches for those of you who are having hard times.

lucky you! - Feminist MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Why should someone have to depend on a spouse to be able to afford a housekeeper? Old Pro had worked 40 years and built a successful business. Assumptions like "must have a wealthy spouse" sound kind of silly to me.

I will be your housekeeper - aint seen clean like my clean

[ In Reply To ..]
SERIOUS!

I'd love to have you as my housekeeper - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
but for the fact that I have had the same woman for many years and this is her only income source. However (and I am serious here) I know a woman who started her own cleaning service and now she is making quite a lot of money. My housekeeper gets, benefits, etc. in addition to $20/hour, but the housekeepers and cleaning people who just do a charge by the hour sometimes get $35/hour! I do realize that California and New York are exceptionally expensive and that they get more here, but even in smaller areas, there is money to be made! :)

I also have an housekeeper - PR

[ In Reply To ..]
The only thing is I do not have to pay an arm and a leg and do not pay on a daily basis. I found out the daily basis was for the birds. The last person I had on a daily basis (have someone come every 2 weeks) asked me if I wanted her to vacuum the bedroom floor. You havent been here in 2 weeks and you asked that? Oh, that and plus the fact here about 3 hours and ready to call it a day so I called someone else. I started also early in this business, 1972 but not retired, able to work less and have a little more now. I put an ad on Craigs List for someone. My house is not hard to keep, most all vacuuming, no dishes, no mopping, my clothes washed and dried only, dusting. I do not like to clean but like a clean home so I pay for it.
Oops, mine should be a housekeeper, not an - PR

PR - Housekeeper - Old Pro

People sometimes assume you have to be rich to have a housekeeper. (I'm not rich by any means.) There comes a time in one's career where you look at what your time is worth = X dollars. And you look at how much a housekeeper would charge - Y dollars. I actually saved money by having someone do the house while I did business. Now that I am retired, I really don't like to do housework. I'm one of those really particular type A folks who just wants everything in its place and my housekeeper can do anything from keep our place clean. She is not afraid of large dogs, either, which is a plus.

Meant to say she could do anything from keeping our house clean to walking a Doberman. Must be time for me to go for coffee!

Job Seeker's Board?
Dec 05, 2011

When I first log onto MT Stars and go to Job seeker's board the last thing it shows is an ad for a radiology MT from towards the beginning of November.  Then if I go into forums and then job seeker's it shows the last job posting as 11/30/11.  I was just curious if that is right and pickings are just that slim or if there might be a problem with the site. ...

Looking At Job Seeker's Board
May 09, 2014

Lots of ads for help BUT underneath the ads are dislikes.  Does this mean TTS is a bad company and don't work for them.  Kind of sad they keep posting jobs so I wonder if disgruntled ex-employees are disliking their ads and why they keep advertising for help.  Any thoughts on TTS? ...

Unbelievable - Job Seeker's Board
Oct 09, 2010

Just checked out the job seeker's board and came across someone willing to work for 5 cents per 65-character line and 7 cents if the audio is poor quality.  I just cannot believe someone would ADVERTISE or SELL themselves to work for such a low rate of pay, which probably would not even equal  to minimum wage!!!!!!  If you want to get screwed do not advertise, just go to work for a few of the national MTSOs that do not have a good reputation on this board!!!!!& ...

There's a posting by Blair's Transcription Services.  First, I can't even find this "company" on the internet to verify it, and second, they're requiring the purchase of a C-phone.  I'll admit, I didn't know what a C-phone was, so I looked it up.  Those things are about $900 each!!!  If they're wanting me to spend more money on an instrument to receive the dictation than I did on my fully-loaded computer, they need to offer a heck of a bette ...

I Recently Applied For A Job On The Job Seeker's Board (sm)
Apr 22, 2010

That was offering part-time acute care work for ICs.  Almost immediately after I applied I received an email from them stating how interested they were in me and asked that I fill out their questionnaire.  Only a one page deal so I started filling it out.  Down at the bottom it asked what my salary requirements were and even though they posted up to 9.5 cpl I placed 10 to 11 cpl, taking into consideration 25 years experience and it is an IC position.  The next portion of this ...

Apr 17, 2014

Just like in these forums there are a few who dislike everything whether they like it or not.  One job posted as "Easy OT and PT work" pays .08 for the GROSS line which is significantly higher than the character line.  Are there people who don't know this?  In other words you would be making the equivalent to .10 of .11 CPL on this job, yet 3 had to dislike it.  What did you dislike about this?  Don't you want to discourage low pay and encourage a job that ...
