Enough of this unnessary testing! - MTquicklip

Posted: Apr 14, 2010

MTSO contacted me by email and we played email tag for a couple of days.  The MTSO stated she wanted to discuss a job that she had available and liked my resume, etc. When talking to the MTSO she said she could not tell me what the job paid until I passed her test.  So, I am suppose to waste my time, yeah right.  She sent me 5 test files, all 8 to 10 minutes in length, and told me to enjoy myself.  Okay,  I started to take the bait, but as she said she liked my resume and job experience, and guess what so did 3 other companies that did not have me jump through hoops to find out the pay and unnessary testing.  Do I think testing is necessary?  Yes, I do, but you really do not have to send me through hoops with 5 tests, 8-10 minutes long to assess my skill level, when I have to continue to work and put food on my table.  Taking all that time to do those tests and I do not even know the pay scale was full of mess.  When she told me to enjoy myself, I sure did, I deleted her files and when she emailed me I promptly told her I accepted another job.  All this unnessary testing proves nothing and it only takes a file or two to see my skill level.  Also, all these testing sites are unnessary.  Everytime one is looking for a job, you have to take those stupid online Career step tests.  I am not mad about that, but do it really assess your strengths?  I pass these tests with flying colors all the time, but I know friends who do not, but are still very good MTs, so I beg to differ that these test are necessary.  Enough, enough!!!

From the other side: Yes, they are necessary. - You just have not had to hire before! lol

I agree!!! I am no longer taking 2 to 3 hour tests for companies. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Feel free to test people with less than 5 years of experience. - But if I have 20, then just send me a voice file.

Some of these tests are as if you are qualifying for your CMT certificate.

Cut me a break. Then, they only want to pay 8 cpl for second or third shift. Cut me another break.

The testing is out of control. If an MTSO feels someone with 20 years of experience should take a 3 hour test, then they can just go past me. Send me the real work which is a voice file and I will transcribe it and send it back. No, it does not take 30 min of voice for me to transcribe for you to figure it out.

To the OP: I would have written back enjoy yourself finding someone else to do your backlog for free today. Sorry, Charlie!

No, not necessary for experienced MTs (sm) - Long time MT

[ In Reply To ..]
For MTs who have been in the field 20, 25, 30, even 35 years with acute care experience on their resume - give me a break. And yes, I have been in the position of having to hire, and I never tested people who clearly were experienced, and no it never came back to bite me.

You are lucky - I've had several 20+ yr experience MTs who sm - Former MTSO

had crappy skills. "I have experience." So what? That guarantees nothing. I don't know how many old timers never had QA or followed a BOS guide, and it certainly showed in their work.

Length of time as an MT proves nothing.
BOS is not 20 years old. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The MT that has 20 years of experience never heard of the BS and neither did their dictators. So, get off of it with the BOS that is something made up by other MTs just to generate revenue.

Length of time proves everything. QA is overrated. We all know it. So, there is no need to go there. It should be first time only time and if there is a question, then the author of the dictation needs to clarify the blank. If there is an MT that needs that much QA, then fire them; they don't know this business and have no business transcribing in the first place.

Do you honestly think someone needs to be tested to the extent that they are only to be told we pay 8 cpl? How about test and then we tell you what we pay? That is a load of crap. If they told us ahead of time, we would not waste our time.

If you are a former MTSO, I sure hope you paid well for your experienced all knowing MTs who followed BOS to the T. Cut me another break with the BOS. That is so overrated as well. BOS means nothing to the MT that transcribes the dictator that wants it a certain way and not what BOS says either. So please, get over yourself. LOL
BOS and AHDI - nn

Those two things mean absolutely NOTHING to me...Since I have been doing this type of work, I have rarely had to go by BOS or anything BOS related...it is the CLIENT'S preference. Who started this crap anyway??? AAMT, BOS, etc etc etc...

Couldn't agree more!!! - sm

I've had MTSOs do the same thing in the past. I've been sent upwards of 10-11 very long reports to transcribe and/or edit. As well as take the "written" test.

I've been on both sides of this and never ever have I sent out more than 2 reports to transcribe. I'd choose one that my MTs felt were harder to do and then just a basic simple one. That way, I could tell if the person could transcribe at all and also if they were skilled in a specific area. The one thing I always do, though, is set a time limit to get them back to me. We all know transcription isn't just about typing but about TAT. I want somebody who can not only transcribe accurately but do it quickly.

I always email and ASK FIRST SM - .

I agree some are entirely tooo long, YES they are, the 5 files, the longer written and some are like we need to pass the MD board exam (OH YES) I have taken to right away, if no job rate or other questions on job ad, I say, may I ask, the lowest to the highest line rate offer for the POSITION. You note, I did not mention my exp etc. I say, this will save valuable time for both sides. They usually do respond, if not, I won't waste my time spending hours on testing, half an hour or so on phone interview only to fine some rate I WOULD Never ever accept, so why test.

Jump through hoops for what 5,6,7,8 etc rate, some even NO SPACES. I had an offer from a company in Santa Monica, California Softscript, did well on test she said, offered 8.5 for THIRD shift.
I passsed, she was shocked, said this was the high end rate for the industry. No it is not, no it is not. I made a copy/paste emailed current rates of about 8 or so companies from the job boards where company listed their rates of 9 and 10. (even that is low if you figure your hourly figures. So their you go fellow MTs. Be strong.

I always ask pay range and shift availability before I test. - nm

Unnecessary testing - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
I think some sort of screening test is necessary, maybe a brief multiple choice test and 1 or 2 voice files, maybe an op note and a consult but not tests that take hours. Something else that would be helpful would be to post whether or not they are hiring so that you don't test for a job that does not exist. Some of the companies do that, quite a few of them do not.

Testing For MQ
Nov 20, 2009

It is truly laughable that MQ expects US MTs to jump through hoops, passing their tests, audits, trying to decipher absolute garbage and paying us like we were 6 month trainees, etc., and then have the audacity to send work to India.  I hope MQ gets its due for all the grief they have caused and their role in the demise of this industry!  If Verizon were to put them out of business, that would definitely be what they deserve. ...

When Testing ....

How are you supposed to know whether to put the headings and text on the same line or put the text on the line under the heading, put a colon after heading or not put a colon?  They said they go by BOS, but all I see pertaining to that in the BOS is the sample reports where they put the text under the heading with no colons after the heading.  I guess I'll just do it that way.  ...

Testing For A MT Job
Feb 07, 2014

How many of you think that testing to get an MT job absolutely ridiculous? When you apply to these so-called medical transcription companies, you send them your resume which I am sure highlights not only your experience, but also your education that you paid good money for and worked hard to obtain.  Yet, they still make you take a test.  Have you realized that the tests are designed for you to fail?    Your whole future is based on one test. Your experience and you ...
