While you use the pedal to move the voice along and read as you go, you do use hot keys/key commands to make editing changes and to move around in the document when needed. That's probably what your friend meant. You're supposed to be able to edit faster by using key commands, keeping your fingers on the keyboard, and not removing you hand to use a mouse. It takes a little getting used to; but if you learn a few commands at a time, eventually, you'll be pretty much mouse-free eventually.
