Depending on your state, you don’t have to register a business name. In some states, you can use DBA status (Doing Business As). My state is not a DBA state. They just use your Social Security number and 1099 form. At any rate, if you want to Trademark the name of your business, ie, if you want to post a website or store front, you would have to register a business name to make sure there is no one currently doing business in that name. Otherwise, if you just want to do contract work for already existing companies, all you have to do is file a 1099.

I would, however, strongly recommend opening a business checking account and have your checks deposited in that, keeping it separate from your household cash and/or any other forms of income you may have for tax purposes. The business accounts are free at most banks if you already have a checking account with them. They limit the number of transcriptions per month (mine is 10), but that’s more than enough to cover what you would need. When companies deposit your pay, they can still do so in your name using the route number of your business checking account. If you’re looking for flexibility, this may be the way to go for you. I do both general and legal work. I wouldn’t say it’s better, but it is straight typing. It seems all that’s ever offered in medical any more is VR, which I hate. Good luck.
