Think like a business not an employee - MTMOM

Posted: Nov 13th, 2015 - 1:10 pm

I have been seeing many posts about IC's not getting enough work.  You have to stop thinking like an employee and more like a business.  As an IC you are NOT obligated to contract with just one client.  As a business you are NOT obligated to be sure to provide enough work for your contractor.  If your neighborhood plumber or electrician only had one client at a time, they would be, well, out of work most or the time.

I encourage you, if you are an independent contract, apply for every contract you see.  You will not get a response from all of them, but if you can keep 2 or 3 contracts going, you can pretty much keep yourself busy.  Don't accept a contract for less than you want to make, your plumber won't come and fix your leaky pipes if you say you will only pay him half of what he wants.  The more independent contractors that stick to their guns and won't work for less than they want, the more control we have over our own business.  It may take a while to build clients, but it is worth it.

They will only take advantage of you if you let them.
