Why do we hyphenate 7-French, but not 7 cm - if they are both part of the metric system?
Posted: Nov 17, 2012x
It used to be hyphenated but I think the BOS ladies - changed it NM

According to BOS 3rd Ed: yes hyphen with French, no hyphen with mm, cm, etc. - (more info inside)

pg 252 says:
"Precede by # or No. if the word "number" is dictated. Since the word "French" is linked directly to the diameter size (and is not an eponym), the number should be correlated to the word "French" with a hyphen. In other words, "French" does not describe "catheter," but instead partners with the numeral to designate size."
pg 278 says:
"Do not use a hyphen to form a compound modifier between a numeric value and its metric unit. According to the National Institute for Science and Technology..."

basically, it depends on grammar and whether it is a compound adjective; you would hyphenate 7-French catheter, but not "the catheter used was a 7 French" as well as 7-mm mass, but not "the mass was 7 mm in size"
Well, it used to be that way and I think it should - still apply but those SM

BOS women changed it. No more hyphen with cm, mm, etc.
7-French has nothing to do with the metric system - (!)

it's just a scale. A 7-French catheter has a 2.3 mm diameter.

The phrase colostomy deep doesn't make sense to me.
