hyphenate 4 x 2 x 2 cm mass - mdaring

Posted: Jan 28, 2010

Should "2-cm" be hyphenated?  I know if it was just 2-cm mass it would be.  In this case, 4 x 2 x 2 is still describing "mass" but it does not look right this way 4 x 2 x 2-cm mass.

Ugh, it should still be hyphenated, huh?  Anyone?

No, it is no longer hyphenated - MyT_WannyMT

Per the AHDI BOS 3rd edition, metric measurements are no longer hyphenated. So what use to be 2-cm mass is now 2 cm mass. However, 2-inch mass would still be hyphenated.

Thank you so very much! That's good to know - mdaring

thanks

how sure are you about that? Can you - sm

back this up by giving us the page in the BOS 3?
Most of the companies and clients still adhere to the BOS 2 rules.
Acc to BOS 2 there should be hyphens when used as modifier.

So, we still should know which 1 to use, 2 or 3.

Check out BOS 3rd edition, page 129-130 - OpMT

It will explain the big change of dropping the use of hyphens when a numeric value is followed by an abbreviated metric unit. It was one of the big changes.

Other changes are outlined in the preface of BOS edition 3

I dont hyphenate cm in any instance - sm

But then I am not a slave to the BOS, and none of my clients or companies use it either.

hyphens acc BOS 2: 4- x 2- x 2-cm mass - I have to do it like that

wow, 4- x 2- x 2-cm looks horrible and I find it difficult to read.

I agree with 4 x 2 x 2 cm.
I would do it as 4 x 2 x 2-cm mass sm. - FlaMT

BOS 2nd Edition page 209 for reference, just like 2-cm x 2-cm mass if dictated that way would be hyphened and 4 x 2 x 2-cm mass is correct and should be hyphened as well. :)
oops, meant hyphenated, sorry, long day nm. - FlaMT

I went with 4 x 2 x 2-cm... - mdaring

I was not too sure about leaving the hyphen out completely. I have also been told to do it 4- x 2- x 2-cm. I agree, it looks horrible!

I stuck with the trusty hyphen between the last numeral and cm.

Thanks everyone for the info!
yes, it looks horrible, therefore in BOS 3 they changed it back - nm

I have entered "pama" as my shortcut for parotid mass; but also I transcribe the phrase "palpable mass", and would logically use "pama" for that. What is a good way in general to handle phrases that would use the same shortcut? Also, specifically for these two phrases, what would you use?  I would like to be consistent so the shortcuts are easy to remember. Thanks for your input- ...
