AP and lateral - single entity? - CuriousOP

For a while now, whenever the doctor said, "AP and lateral is taken today," I would change it to "AP and lateral are taken today," but then a thought came to me that what if "AP and lateral" is a single entity, much like "macaroni and cheese," which is usually referred as a single thing. Is that the case with AP and lateral films?

AP and lateral are two different views of the chest. AP and lateral are taken today is correct. They sometimes only do an AP view.

AP is anteroposterior view (front to back). Lateral is side view. Two different things, but since they often do both in one session, they lump it together, sometimes saying AP lateral. This would be incorrect. It's AP and lateral.

I guess since I've been hearing "AP and lateral is" so often that I thought maybe I had been wrong the entire time.

That Happens with S1 and S2 - Old MT

I hear S1 and S2 IS normal so much, that I almost type it that way. S/B S1 and S2 ARE normal. AP and lateral "ARE" is correct. (Are correct?! LOL.)

I have always been under the impression that when a department is used as an entity, such as "The patient was seen by the Pulmonary Department," that it would be capitalized. If it were "The patient was seen in the pulmonary department," it would not be capitalized. This is to denote that in the first example, the patient was actually seen by a person, not by the department itself (a thing). I think this is an important distinction for clarity.
