2200 kilocalorie diet - DSH-A

Posted: Nov 20, 2014

Am doing QA on a report where dictator stated the patient was placed on a 2200-kilocalorie diet. I'm not a mathematician, but wouldn't that be somewhere in the range of 2,200,000 calories per day? She dictated it twice in the report. Can someone enlighten me? Thank you.

kilocalorie is correct-sm - anon

We normally just say calorie but kilocalorie is the more precise, scientific term.

clarification? - DSH-A

so it does or does not equal 2,200,000 calories? Kilo is the prefix meaning 1000. Is it any different when it comes before the word calorie?

Thanks.

Well, it has been a few years since my biology classes but-- - anon

what we refer to as a calorie is just shorthand for kilocalorie. A kilocalorie of food is the amount of energy needed to raise the 1 L of water one degree of temperature at sea level. It bogs down a bit in my mind after that but when food calories are mentioned, they are generally referring to kilocalories.
Thank you - DSH-A

Great, thank you. I was hoping to understand it a bit better. So in this case, kilo doesn't necessary mean x1000. Appreciate your response!

I did a lot of OB/GYN acute care, and I was under the impression they were meaning to say calories per kilogram (per day). I always typed cal/kg.
Do the math on that. sm - Anon

Using your formula of cal/kg per day if it was dictated 2000 kcal per day and a person weighed 60 kg, that would be 120,000 calories per day. Wow!! I hope you will transcribe as dictated from now on, kilocalorie or kcal.

I'm sorry, but if you're QA... - sm

And you can't even reference a very simple term like "kilocalorie," what are you doing in that position?

I agree. - Just look up "kilocalorie" SM

You're making it more complicated than it is by worrying about what the prefix "kilo" means. All you have to do is look up kilocalorie in Dorland's or any medical reference book, or even google it. Not being unkind, but if you are QA, wouldn't you know that?
