I get a mix of SRE and transcribing jobs, with - of course - half line rate for SRE.
I have no idea who is "allowed" to dictate to the SRE platform for my company, but I can say that it's mighty strange that the worst dictators seem to predominate - and hence, you get a constant stream of SRE documents requiring very heavy editing.
Not infrequently, I get documents that are such garbage from beginning to end that there aren't three consecutive words that make any sense anywhere in the document.
These documents CANNOT be "edited" unless you don't mind earning 23 cents per day. They have to be wiped out and simply transcribed from the git-go, but since it came in as an SRE document I'm going to transcribe that document for 4 cents a line. And, of course, even transcribing this document I'll still have to spend plenty of time completing the report properly because the dictation is so rotten.
It's bad enough that we're paid such miserable line rates for bringing our knowledge and skill to the SR platform - literally, putting lipstick on the pig. I'm sure doctors have NO idea what crap the SR engine actually produces. The dependent clauses that are stuck on the end of one sentence instead of the beginning of the next - or treated as complete sentences. The numbered lists that are all screwed up. Headings that have to be inserted, deleted, and/or changed. Common nouns that are inexplicably capitalized in the Middle of a Sentence. I could go on and on and on.
But to be forced into the Hobson's choice of either spending hours editing this mess or transcribing it at half line rates - that to me just puts the tin hat on the whole evil production-based compensation scheme.
Just once - ONCE - in my thirty years in this business, I'd like anomalous situations like this to go MY way instead of the COMPANY'S way. When the audio's so muffled that it's a subjective judgment what was said, or there are two equally legitimate ways to render the text, I'd like things to go MY way instead of tipping to the QA who has 25 years less experience than I do.
So far, it's MTSO 50,847 - ME 0. I'll be offering very long odds at the track betting window if you care to take a flutter on my chances in the next race. $1 gets you $200 if I win, place or show.
