ASR, The Proverbial Brooklyn Bridge For Sale - Silly Rabbit

Posted: Jul 16, 2010

Whoever sold the medical transcription industry on what a timesaving, streamlining, cost saving state-of-the art boon to the profession ASR would become is the scammingest grifter I ever heard of.

oops.  It is saving costs by decimating transcriptionists' pay.  I wonder how many years they have left to make  payments on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Oh, yeah! ASR companies have totally ripped off - all the hospitals and MTSOs they - sm

have sold this VR mess to. 12 years ago, a doctor I transcribed for at a large hospital came to me and asked me what I thought of VR, since his department was considering getting it. I told him exactly what everyone's been talking about now, 12 years later: That it will always need human ears to listen to it and clean up the errors, and that those ears can only listen as fast as the the dictation can be heard and understood. So even with VR, if it's fast and garbled, it still has to be slowed down to be deciphered.

And that it takes just as skilled an MT to listen to garbled speech and fill in VR mistakes, as it does to actually do the transcribing. I told him they'd just be paying for it twice: Once for the VR (which would need techs to set it up, train the docs, and keep it running and up-to-date), and skilled MTs to keep the reports cleaned up. I said, "Why bother with the VR at all, if you're still going to have to pay an experienced MT to listen to it any edit it? Why not skip the VR and all its little technologic headaches, and just stick with the MT?" He said, "Wow - you're right".

His department DID try out 2 different VR systems later on, under a different department head, but they were never happy with it, and kept going back to the truth that I had been telling them all along.

So, you better believe it does my heart good to read about all the bloopers VR is spewing out now. Not as "trainable" as they kept saying, huh? And with MTs' pay shrinking almost daily, and American MTs likely going the way of the Dodo, then how well is VR going to "learn" once it's 100% Indians/Filipinos/Chinese (or maybe Martians?) training it? Not very well.

Then the VR companies are going to have to roll out something better (or that at least they SAY is better) to cover for all the ESL people trying to use it. I wonder if the hospitals and MTSOs are going to fall for that snake-oil a 2nd time...????

I'm Hitting The Proverbial Wall
Nov 11, 2014

Lately, I've been checking my hourly production, every hour on the hour.  For my first hour of work this morning, I stayed completely focused, no distractions except getting a quick cup of coffee (in the same room as my work desk) but quickly sat right back down again and went right back to work.  What was my hourly rate of production for that hour?  $7.42.  Yes, I said I earned a whopping $7.42 in a solid hour of intense concentration and focus.  I also noticed ...

A Box Under A Bridge?
Jun 09, 2014

Is it really coming down to living in a box under a bridge with this job skill?  I'm certainly headed that way.  Am I alone?  I don't know how any MT who is single can make it at 4 cpl.  How is this company able to get away with paying such low wages while demanding 99% perfection, and a 200 lines per hour? With no pension and no possibility of retirement hopelessness is my middle name. ...

This Is The Bridge I Cross

I could go into a lot of woes about MT work.  We all know how the industry is going.  I am in my 50s, and frankly I am just biding/doing my time.  My back is bad, my legs won't hold up for standing or walking too long, this computer has all but done my eyesight in.   ;) That being said, I do have to give the positives.  I made very good money for nearly 14 years.  I cand dress up or down,  work in my night gown, undies or whatever I deem appropr ...

Aug 16, 2014

I just chanced upon this interesting article which suggests so.Nuance’s $250 million 2027 Convertible Notes redemption is either a signal of an imminent buyout or a red herring. If one read between the lines and disregarded the noise during Monday's earnings, a very interesting event was announced which could signal a buyout is on the horizon: Nuance is calling back all of their $250 million, 2027 Convertible Notes (at 2.7%).It is my belief that the redemption of these notes is in an ...

Could You Talking Of "impending" Sale Please Post Some Info/proof?
Sep 08, 2012

It's just reorganization because of Nuance buying Transcend, as far as I can see, and we all knew that was coming. As far as MM buying Nuance, you have to be kidding. MM was just bought by Chase, and they are in bad shape financially. They (MM) refused an offer from an unnamed company prior to the sale, and that offer was much higher than Chase's offer, FYI. There was speculation that Nuance was the company, however, no proof. Nuance is riding high with Nina and everything else the ...
