Looking for one of those clickety-click keyboards (sm) - Long time MT

I really like the old style keyboards with the metal contacts and springs, rather than the soft touch keyboards with silicon contacts and rubber (but with a USB plug).

I've looked at Office Depot, Staples and Best Buy - no one has them.

Anybody else like those? and do you have any suggestions on where they can be found?

I absolutely LOVE those keyboards. I love the sound they make. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find one. There used to be a place in my town where they recycle everything, and I could go and get a keyboard from them when mine gave out, but now they are putting their keyboards on eBay. I could swing by there tomorrow as it is right by my grandbaby's daycare, when I drop him off and find out the name of the place. However, finding one with the USB end is a nightmare. I think Radio Shack carries the converters though, to turn the round end to USB.

I finally gave up the fight, and now have an ergonomic wave keyboard (a microsoft 4000), and I really like it. I also have acrylic nails (would not live without them) so I have the clicky sound anyway :)

I'll let you know tomorrow what the place is called!

Thanks for checking for me. Maybe I'll try some of the computer recycling places in my area, hadn't thought of that. I did try using a converter with my old keyboard that I love but found the keyboard would become basically unresponsive about halfway into my work shift. Finally had to unplug it and go with the USB port keyboard that came with this new computer and everything worked fine, so I'm assuming it didn't like the converter. I'll keep looking but I may have to adjust to using the soft touch keyboards.

Google Avant Stellar keyboard. Yes, they are expensive but I love mine and I've had it for years.

I got this keyboard about 6 months ago, not cheap (about $100), but it is the kind you are seeking. Much easier on the hands. You can also get old IBM keyboards on Ebay, but they have really gone up in price because of scarcity ($50 and up).

I thought I was the only one who used that keyboard anymore - mine is starting to wear out and I have a microsoft digital media pro, model 1031 which came out in 2004, found them listed on e-bay and actually bought one tonight for 20.00 and it is new - if you search google for microsoft and the model 1031 it will bring them up, a really, really good keyboard, keys are not all scrunched up together.

Does anyone know of an adapter that can be used on the old IBM "clacky" keyboards to convert it to a USB connection? I know there are adapters out there but I can't find one for these keyboards. The "end piece" is large round and the regular keyboards have the smaller round connection. you can get adapters for them but I can't find one with the bigger adapter hole and then the USB connector. I would LOVE LOVE to find an adapter so I can use the old IBM keyboard. ...

I presently have a keyboard that is USB, and the insert, delete, home, end, page up and page down are in groups of 2 keys top and bottom, 3 across. When I purchased my new HP computer, I noticed the keyboard that came with it was a USB, but the now the insert key is up with the pause/break key in the same line as the hot keys (F) and the home, delete, end, page up, page down are now 2 columns of 3 top and bottom. I recently started having some issues with my Logitech wireless keyboard where it was getting harder to press down on the keys. I recently moved and when I got everything set up I noticed that the touch seemed to be different. Shook the keyboard out, took a damp cloth and wiped the keyboard down, etc and still seems to be "different." I have a two-fold question here. Has anyone tried the arthritis gloves from transcripotion gear that are designed to keep your hands warm in the winter (sorry to say that awful word but it is coming), and the stiffness when I am cold is very hard to take in terms of speed and loosening up. Second fold, has anyone tried the mechanical keyboards? The ones that area not the "soft touch" and actually make a clicking sound? The only ones I am finding are ones for "gamers" ...

I have been a transcriptionist for quite some time and have used the Microsoft Elite Ergonomic Keyboard and have tried two new replacements but for some reason with the newer version of this brand the keys are really hard to touch. Has anyone used a split keyboard such as the Kinesis or Gold Touch? I am looking at spending more on something that is of better quality and soft touch on the keys due to shoulder problems. Why is our new dictationary so useless? It shows us a mis-spelled word, so I went ahead and right-clicked on it, and it gave me no options. I mis-spelled finesteride and the correct spelling should have been finasteride. One letter difference and our brilliant Qictionary can't find the correct option??? Had to go to Google to find it, but means extra keystrokes. Why bother to highlight a mis-spelled word? ...

In ASR, it will highlight the word you double click and also it will put the audio back to that point. In straight transcription, it will highlight the word and take the audio all the way back to the beginning. And they won't fix it! - because I am never to take my hands off the keyboard???!! I find mousing quicker to follow ASR. I've tried cursor tracking, but it rarely ends up exactly where I want and I either end up having to use the keyboard or mouse (depending upon ...

What's your favorite keyboard to use to transcribe? My recent experiment, a multimedia Apevia, which by the way is a piece of junk! But it was blue and pretty, so I bought it. I am always trying to find a better keyboard, but none beat my Saitek! Big letters, spacious keyboard (I have a bit of a wide hand), and lots of fun stuff like background lighting. I had to request a medical report for myself and oh dear lord what a mess that point-and-click stuff is. They check all items in a ROS and the thing throws it all together in giant run-on sentences, separating everything by a comma, and leaving weird spaces everywhere. There's no consistency anywhere in how it makes things look, i.e. in a numbered list that has 1., 2., etc., putting one space after the period after the number and the next one putting 2 spaces, then back to 1 space, then may ...

I just got a wireless mouse as a gift and absolutely love it, however it does use batteries and I'm unsure how often I'll have to replace them due to being on the computer for long hours working. I would love to get a wireless keyboard as well (two less cords to trip over, lol), and am would appreciate input from other MTs who have used them. I was wondering if anyone has tried either the Kinesis contoured, Kinesis Freestyle, Goldtouch, or SafeType keyboards. I am using a Microsoft ergo split keyboard now, but I am having more and more pain and numb/weird feelings in my arms and hands. I'm so sick of having my right hand have to bounce back and forth from trackball to home keys, and arrow keys back to home keys it is much slower than transcription. I also lose time having to constantly stop and feel for the home key position. I think these ideas are getting used interchangeably when they are very different applications. EHR is still transcribed documents, just not paper charts. Facilities have already been on this for a good while now and the transcriptionist will basically see no difference as we don't usually handle a chart anyways in-house or virtually. However, it is the point-n-click programs that are phasing out the transcribed document. ...
