PLEASE explain windows and orphans to me!! I am so confused. I have 2 accounts - sm

1 says we Do NOT adjust for windows and orphans and the other says We DO adjust for windows and orphans. So far I have gotten 2 different explanations from MT friends! I really am confused....even QA seems to be confused because I have gotten different explanations from them as well!!!! HELP!

Orphans are that one line that goes onto page 2. Many prefer you figure how - to keep doc. on all one page. nm

Definitions are confused, but they're really the same - Pragmatist

idea. Both widows and orphans are a single word or single line of text that ends up all by itself on its line, visually separated from the body of text it's supposed to be part of. Page breaks can cause this, dropping the last word or line of a paragraph to the next page. The last word of a paragraph will be an orphan if it wraps to the next line all by itself.

This is mostly just a visual layout problem, slightly a functional problem if the end of the idea is on the next page. In any case, if your system allows you to fix them, go ahead. It's nicer.

BTW, the last few platforms I've worked on do not allow any of the normal fixes, and so this has become a total nonissue we do not address. We can't insert a paragraph break to drop the last 2 lines to the next page, for instance. We can (unofficially) delete an unimportant word or 2 to pull text up, but that's definitely acting outside instructions. (It would also require us to do a print preview to check for a problem, which would be regarded as an unacceptable waste of time by both MTSO and MT. Simply not done.)

It's not a W/O issue, but on our platform we can't even lock, for instance, G 1 together so they aren't separated at the end of a line--the keystrokes won't work. Before, we were actually instructed not to bother, but I always did.

measurements that are separated from their units of measure or titles that are separated from names.

So if you type "Amoxil 250 mg b.i.d." and the "250" is on the end of one line and the "mg" is on the beginning of the next line that is a widow and orphan situation. If you type "Dr. Mumblemouth" and the "Dr." is at the end of one line and "Mumblemouth" is at the beginning of the next line, same thing. The MTSO I work for requires us to add spaces before the W&O to force both to be on the next line. Doesn't bother me, 'cause I get paid for spaces. ;-)

I've done this before with no problems but for some reason I can't figure it out today. . . I want to copy my Stedman's Electronic Dictionary from XP to Win 7. If an account has been offshore for almost 1 year and is being transcribed by an offshore MT and qa'd by 2 separate offshore qa and then 1 American qa.......where are they actually saving money? How long does the Q need to pay 4+ (the person who audits them too) to do 1 report before they realize their American MTs could get it done in 1 shot and maybe 2 on occasion? Okay, so if you go below mininum wage, the company has to "pay extra" to bring your paycheck up to minimum wage, because BY LAW they have to pay at least minimum wage. What counts against us and what does not count against us. Why is it that I can only work 28 hours as a part timer, but full time people are able to get OT, no limit. I don't take insurance, don't want it, but there is no darn reason I can't work as many hours as I want also. This is ridiculous. I was working tonight. Just me and someone else on the system on my primary account, like always. why some MTs make it their business what every other MT is doing during their work day. I work directly for a hospital and we are given the capability to look at the jobs that are on the system waiting to be transcribed and we are allowed to assign jobs, change the priority of a job, etc. The reason we are given this capability is because those working in the hospital, nurses, doctors, HIM staff, etc. have our phone numbers and if they need a report they can call us at home. to REQUIRE us to make up hours when they don't have work available during our scheduled shifts? How can they take away the option of taking off without pay when they haven't provided any work during our shift?
