Soon to be a Nuancer and am nervous - anon

Posted: Nov 27, 2012

I'm getting ready to have software installed on my computer this week and am having second thoughts after reading the posts on this board.  I'm really upset about the off-shoring that Nuance does and was naive when I applied (I should've checked on the boards first).  I'm not sure if I should back out or give it a try.  The account I'm assigned to supposedly is a new clinic account so everything is up in the air - it'll be straight typing and then move to VR but I just don't know at this point.  I need to work at home until the fall when my youngest son will be in Jr. High and then I can get a job outside of the house.  It makes me sad to think this is such a dying industry - it was great while it lasted I guess.  If anyone has any positives about Nuance, I'd appreciate hearing them.  Otherwise, I guess I'll just start and see what happens.

You will always be paid on time - that's about it. - nm

If I was you, I'd at least give it a try. s/m - nuancemt

I've been with them for 1 year. I have been a MT for 25 years. I feel all these companies equally suck regarding pay, VR, benefits, etc. I've only stayed because every place I have checked into, it's the same crap that happens here so why jump from company to company? I do keep tabs on jobs in my area, as soon as I find something that pays equal to or better than this, I'm gone.

My account stays pretty busy. I have a backup account. I have not had any issues with TL. I asked for shift change, got it. Asked for T'giving off, got it. I just keep my mouth shut and do my job, but I sure am counting down the days until retirement!

Good luck to you and welcome, seriously.

In the same boat as you anon - soon to start

I was hired part-time in the beginning of Nov. Was supposed to start working 8-12 pm shifts 11/18 or at least start training. At first was told training was at my own pace 10-15 hours. Then I got moved back to 11/26 and no training is only 4-8 hours on with someone on the phone. Today I finally get an email from someone but now it seems I need other software installed on my computer. In the meantime, I've taken a temp job out of the house totally not in my field. Gotta do something, right ? I too have read this forum, albeit, after the fact. I wonder as well if I did the right thing. I am going to ride it out and see what happens and hope for the best but plan for the worst. Good Luck.

Give it a try - Typing 24/7

You have nothing to lose. If it doesn't work out, then you earned a little money in the interim.

There are worse places - anon

The only complaint I have about Nuance is QA and the bonus structure around it.

Otherwise it's fine. You won't make a ton of money but that is par for the course in this industry now anyway.

Agree to give it a try - mtmom

I agree to at least give it a try especially if you do not have another job. I am an ex Transcender and I have already seen some changes for the worse and more still may come. It is a job and it does pay on time. Just pray that you get an account with work available. Mine runs out sometimes but I know others who run out alot. I am on radiology and I have two part time accounts one of which is acute care just to keep my skills up in that area as well because with these buyouts you just never know what will happen. This is my second one. Do what you are told stick to your schedule and you will probably be fine...Good luck!

Nuance itself is not that bad. Their QA will drive you NUTS and the pay is crappy, but at least it's a job.

It's not that bad. You might be happy there. - nm

The good and the bad - in my experience

[ In Reply To ..]
The good is that the platform is not bad, the VR is better than some, and especially I like the fact you can research much more effectively than other places because you can see previous patient reports and previous dictator reports (i.e. if you can't hear what one doc is saying you can look in a previous report and try to figure it out, also if you have one of those mumblemouths who says the same thing all the time you are one click away from figuring out what that is). Of course, now you are no longer able to copy and paste from the reports, but it's better than nothing from a research perspective.

The bad is of course is the ridiculous 3 month QA percentage hanging over your head all the time and it does seem arbitrary and harsh, really unnecessary. I think if they were using the QA bonus as a reward, people wouldn't mind so much going into the FIESA on their own time, but what's the point if you are only going to find you made a stupid mistake and lost your bonus for 3 months? Also when you lose that bonus you are not going to try to up your line count because you won't get the bonus.

Stupid stupid policies is the bad like the QA farce and screwing down the pay just because they can. Being a line item on someone's budget to cut rather than a company devoted to MT is another bad, but all in all the work itself is not horrible.

agree with good and bad - new but old

I have a good account which is about 70 percent straight typing and the remainder VR. On a good day I type about 1800 to 2000 lines but like I said I am on a great account with good dictators. I lose time on looking stuff up - hate to pend if I don't have to. The QA is really bad though. Get points marked off for the stupid things. Used to sweat but now I just let it roll. Do your job and you will be fine.

In Week 2 Of Being An Ex-nuancer
May 19, 2015

So I am in my 2nd week of being an ex-nuancer and not being an MT. There is a whole new world out there I forgot existed.  My hands, fingers, wrists, elbows, back, and bum do not hurt and ache. No headaches.  I get to leave my job when I am done and come home and forget about it.  Good pay, good benefits, and I get to see other people every day instead of just me and my computer.  Although there is of course the adjustment of not having the security of being home everyday to ...

NEWBIE GETTING NERVOUS
Aug 29, 2010

I'm new to the profession and new to the boards. I am here just trying to get a feel for the real world in transcription. I have to say the few things I have read on here so far are making me very nervous. I am just finishing my course within the next month or two through Penn Foster so the search for a job is in my near future... These are a few things I am curious about:  Is the MT job market really that bad? What advice can you give me as a new MT? Have any of you MT's out ...

Interviewing Soon And Nervous
Oct 01, 2010

I have an interview coming up and I am a little nervous.  I have not had an interview in years and I don't know what to expect.  The last two times I had interviews with an MTSO, they did not really interview me but instead just told me about the account and wanted to know what shift I wanted to work. For those of you who have been interviewing recently, what was it like?  What questions can I be expected to answer.  Thanks. ...

Nervous Transition
Oct 21, 2011

I have come into transciption within the past four years. This is something I have always wanted to do and finally found a way to get into the field. There does not seem to be alot of money in straight typing, and less in VR. I have always made incentive, but still - its just not enough and I work very hard to get that. Right now, I work for a company with straight typing only, no VR. I am taking a position with a company that has VR and it sounds to me like the position is pre ...

MT Transitioning Out And Nervous
Jan 25, 2014

Seeking advice from other MTs who are currently in school for another field or have already transitioned out of MT. One semester to go and I will hopefully be prepared to enter a career field that has nothing to do with MT. Problem is, I find myself worrying about working outside the home. I've been an at-home MT for almost 12 years. I have found a new enjoyment being around people in my classes and activities, but I'm so used to the home environment as my workplace. I am ge ...

Applying To SoftScript But Nervous
Nov 12, 2012

Well, I am going to go ahead and apply to SoftScript and I must say I am nervous hearing the negatives about the work, but at the same time if I don't get out of Nuance I will pull my hair out soon. At least I have read a few positives about SoftScript. I have read NO POSITIVES about Nuance. I came in as part of a buyout several years ago and it is scary to think I might be leaving one bad to another bad, but at the same time I think Nuance is trying to push some of us out anyway and I have ...

Nervous Waiting On Tests Results For A Job
Jun 27, 2013

I'm worried I didn't pass it. I pored over it with a fine-tooth comb many times, so if it's meant to be, it will be, and if not, it won't. I am really broke though, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I passed it. Can anyone else relate? ...

I Have A Job Interview Tomorrow At A Hospital And I'm So Nervous
Sep 24, 2014

I have a job interview at a huge hospital tomorrow for a medical records analyst.  I'm very excited that I even got a call for an interview, but I'm also scared beyond words.  I haven't had a face-to-face interview in 12 years and I've become such a hermit that I'm scared to death of going for an interview, driving there, answering questions, etc.  I went back to school, just finished and got my degree, applied for this job and now I have an interview so i ...

Work Comp For Nervous Breakdown LOL?
Feb 25, 2015

I probably shouldn't even be complaining considering how bad most people have it at this company (and I spent 4 years waist deep in the existential horror of ever expanding BoBs and ASR so I know it can be so much worse), but sometimes the little stuff just drives me nuts.  The last three months have been a QA rollercoaster.  In December, I flunked my quality audit.  Oh my god, I put "were" instead of "was."  I can see how that's a critical error.  Hundreds of ...

I Am Enrolling In The Andrew's School Next Week And Am Getting Nervous
Jan 24, 2011

Hi. My name is Suzanne and I am enrolling in the Andrew's School for Medical Coding next week, on Tuesday February 1, 2001 and am getting nervous. I am a medical transcriptionist and I want to know if any thing I have done in the last 10 years, such as medical terminology and anatomy, will help me. Of course I will take that part of the course, but I want to know if that will help. Also, I am most nervous about deciphering the codes. I guess what I am asking is how do I know I will be a goo ...

Hi Friends: My name is Suzanne and I am sending in my paperwork to enroll in the Andrew's School for Medical Coding and I am nervous.  I am nervous because I do know I can do it, but what about my age of 57.  I am too old for studying for this field?  I am a medical transcriptionist and have been for 12 years and I am a fast thinker and learner and I know I can do it, but what about the Affordable Care Act and the jobs being outsourced like medical transcription.
