Groceries or insurance premium - oy

Posted: Aug 11, 2012

Thanks to open enrollment, just cancelled all medical insurance/benefits to keep $188 per month from being taken from my pay which is too meager to afford the insurance premium AND food....

Who did you contact. I sent an email because my TL told me to do it that way but I have yet to hear anything. I want to cancel mine too

I took higher premium on my insurance - sm

I was paying about 400/month for BC/BS individual insurance privately. They upped it another $100 so I went to a higher deductible, and got it down to about $250/mo. I don't know if that would work for you, but thought I'd share just in case.

she couldnt afford $188 and food, so how could - she afford $250?

maybe bring down the cost and gave her policy changes as an example.

I understand what you mean. The insurance premium is reasonable, but pay is not. So that is money I can no longer afford to have deducted from my pay. Had to make a decision. And it's scary. But can't pay for insurance when struggling to pay basic needs. And employed full time....it is criminal.

Not trying to be smart - sm

But I worked for a rinky-dink mom and pop MT service for 4 years with no group plan and because I had an "existing condition," I was not eligible for an individual policy on my own. (Had been to the ER once with diverticulitis and was put on outpatient oral antibiotics. Basically, if you had been to the doctor or taken any Rx, you were considered to have a "preexisting condition.")

I hear ya. I have ins., but never go to the doctor - as I cant afford co-pays. It sucks. nm

No deductible choice now, one plan and one plan only. - new insurance

Kind of surprised to not see any posts here about the new insurance and even greater lack of flexibility now.

Self insured - Dara

Both my husband and I have been self insured for 30+ years, which means we've always had to buy our own health insurance. We've taken the highest deductible to keep the price as low as possible; basically, it's been just catastrophic insurance, and we've paid all health maintenance and office visits out of pocket. When prices continued to rise, we finally dropped our traditional insurance two years ago and joined a health care sharing program, "Christian Health Care Ministries." I was hesitant at first, and it's necessitated a new way of thinking, but it's worked well for us. We still pay our basic costs but the sharing has paid for, so far, a papilloma removal from under my tongue and polyp removal during colonoscopy. We have to take a more active role; i.e., negotiating for a cash-pay discount with the providers, if possible. Our monthly premiums went from $750/mo. to about $350/mo. as well. You might want to check into something like that. All the best to you.

Preexisting condition insurance by state - poor

[ In Reply To ..]
If you have a preexisting condition, you can get reasonable insurance through your state. I don't have a preexisting, but my son does. My state costs $362 (per person) per month with NO deductible and only $20 copay, PLUS only $6000 out of pocket.

Here is the web page to check by state:

https://www.pcip.gov/

It's still a heck of a lot better than the family plan from Nuance costing $500 every 2 weeks and for which you get really basically nothing. I don't bother to get a physical or mammogram because what if there is something wrong. Yeah, the mammogram is free, but anything else is going to cost the earth, so better not find out.

You have to be uninsured for 6 months though - poor

But I might as well be, with what little you get from these ripoff insurance plans now.

Here is the page to click on a map.

thx - sm

Thanks for your post, but here in MO, the "high risk pool" through the state was $900/month. High risk. Like I had AIDS or was a paraplegic.

None of the premiums seem that high - according to the website

But the deductibles are way higher. Sometimes I think employees of these places even are not letting people know about options, whether they are not educated or choose not to let anyone in on it, I don't know. I had to dig to find this stuff because I hate being uninsured but with all the cuts in pay I could not afford the $500 every two weeks (especially when you still have a huge deductible after that!). Finally, New York State is cheaper for something! We do pay high taxes though I think.

Insurance Premium Went Up!

I'm so disgusted.  I carry health/dental/vision on myself and my husband, and my premium just went up 30.00 a pay period...that's 60.00 more monthly!!  I pay entirely too much for just us 2 as it is, but we have need for meds, and being without is not an option.  My husband is in between jobs.  Just needed to vent.  Insurance just should not cost this much.  It's disgusting what comes out of my check!! ...

I just went over the NEW (using the term loosely) insurance for January.. wow.. there is not much change to mention.  Well, except that smokers will have to pay more.  We will still have to pay (single) 2500.00 out of pocket before they will even pay the 75% (my heart goes out to those with families!).  I dont know about the rest of you, but that just dooms me to no benefits to speak of or else to just owe out the wazooo.  I had been told by my physician that I had ...

Health Insurance As An IC
Oct 21, 2010

I am considering becoming self employed (after a fashion) as an IC.  I have gone onto www.healthcare.gov and gone through the steps they advise when you want to take out private insurance.  Holy cow, the insurance plans offered varied in premium cost from $600 to $4000 per month for a family of 4, but the thing that got me was two items:  Maximum out of pocket for individual: 0$.  Annual deductible for individual: 0$.  Woohoo.  This just seems too good to be true.&n ...
