Disappointed.. - MT18

Posted: May 16, 2012

I have been working for Nuance for a few months now, thinking as time passed it would get better, but it hasn't. I am so frustrated that I am thinking of getting out of transcription altogether after 20 years.  Does anybody else feel, well, taken advantage of working for them, especially with the VR editing?  It seems to be almost totally re-typing, not just editing a few errors.

Feel the same way - sm

Sometimes it makes me feel better to know other people feel the same way I do. I have had the exact same experience as you. Used to love, love, love my job. Now, want out of the whole thing. The pay is preposterous and the job is unfulfilling now because of what they have done. 13 years here and I make less now than I did 10 years ago, 50% less. Feel like I'm a big sucker on a daily basis for staying.

These line rates - and VR

were created by MTSOs to screw us out of paycheck. Obviously we cannot edit twice as fast, and if we could, it doesn't matter because they cut our pay rate by more than half.

We've been had, and we let them do it by continuing to work for them.

Oh, yeah.... - (see message)

I felt exactly the same way....had been transcribing as an employee for the same hospital (teaching hospital, several hundred dictators) for 18 years when we were outsourced to an MTSO. It wasn't just the drop in pay...I could tolerate a reasonable decrease in pay. It was the dramatically unfair compensation for what the job entails and having to do the identical work for the identical doctors I had been transcribing for years but making less than half as much...probably about 1/4 as much in my case when we were switched to VR. And yet, as others have said, when you practically have to retype the report, it just wasn't worth it for 4 CPL.

My manager said that people who have been transcribing for 15+ years often hate the switch to VR while less experienced people often love it. I think the difference is that if you're very inexperienced, you don't actually KNOW that what VR has typed is not correct, so it seems like a godsend that VR "tells" you what you're hearing. If only it did that!!!

I say this in the past tense because I just couldn't keep doing it and have bowed out of MT for now. I still like to read these boards from time to time because it reminds me that I probably made the right decision....only speaking for myself, of course.

Good luck to everyone....I truly wish us all well.

SO VERY TRUE! - sm

You hit the nail on the head with the comment, "My manager said that people who have been transcribing for 15+ years often hate the switch to VR while less experienced people often love it. This is precisely why India can get away with "doing our jobs" although they really are not "doing our jobs!"

Doing VR for 6 years now - still not better

I work for the Q (MModal), but it is the exact same song and dance. I went from making $38,000 working 5 hours a day, 5 days a week to making $18,000 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

VR should be ILLEGAL!

I feel exactly the same and worse. See my post below: "Nuance: Speech recognition versus transcription line counts."
VR line counts are so unfair. We are not just editing, we are transcribing, and I feel the lines we transcribe should be paid at our transcription rate not the VR rate. I spent so much time retyping and punctuating what VR couldn't do corrctly that I finally just quit Nuance. I am hoping for better but think line counts typed versus line counts actually edited should be added to that big court case.

I Am So Disappointed In My New Job.
May 30, 2014

MT since 1986. Trying to survive the demise of this profession. Have worked for the biggest and the worst, so I was thrilled to be hired in March by a small company, who very rarely hires, is owned by an individual, has only straight typing and pays a good line rate.  Was told there was "tons of work" and "new accts" coming and we NEED MTs.   I'm on third shift and here I sit, nothing to do, and since the start of this pay period on 5/21, I have a total of 1099 lines.  W ...

So Disappointed In Keystrokes
Jun 21, 2011

I can't blielieve that this is happening to me, to us.  Supposedly they lost a big account to overseas but didn't bother to tell us... jobs were half of what they were before, and I was very suspicious.  I've been in the business long enough to know what something isn't right.  Only one little email saying that the account was slow or something along those lines.  As of today, nothing.. not one single email telling us anything.  Not one phone cal ...

Landmark Transcription - Very Disappointed
Jan 15, 2010

Was hired by this company for a large hospital new account.  Owner said she was excited about hiring 40 MTs.  There has never been more than a few jobs per day.  It is definitely overflor and there is not a lot of that.  Not enough work for even part time.  Very vague about any further work.  Am very disappointed.  Owner does not have a grip on reality. ...

Disappointed In Career Step
May 29, 2010

I'm very disappointed regarding this medical editing course being offered by Career Step.  In my opinion it's a terrible way to take advantage of newbies who are worried about the job market and willing to pay anything to upgrade their skills, when every employer I've ever heard of trains their MTs on VR.  I can't imagine an employer requesting a course in medical editing in addition to the standard MT course.  I myself am a Career Step grad, have been gai ...

Disappointed, Hurt, And Confused
Feb 24, 2012

I have worked for the same company for many years and I worked very hard to get into a QA position.  I have worked in QA for the past 3 years and have never heard anything but good things about my work.  Well…all couple of weeks ago, I get an email that the company will be making some changes to the team I work on and then last week, I am notified all the QA people are being demoted. They told me that it didn't have anything to do with my job performance and they didn' ...

Update On "Disappointed In New Job"
Jun 12, 2014

I’m posting this on the company board because for me, it is company specific, but it could go on the main board.  I cannot name the company.  Here is the link for my original post if you want the history: http://forum.mtstars.com/548168.html So my last paycheck was $202 for 2 weeks, which is approximately $2.52/hr for 80 hrs.  I am FT, IC, 3rd shift.    I’ve had low paychecks before with other companies, but few and far between and not that low!  With ...
