Because I saw several recent postings about test scores, I decided to ask a question. My question may seem strange but it's because the experience with the school I attended was strange. I hope and pray I never go through another nightmare like what I just experienced. This is for anyone who tested recently or for the experienced MTs who remember their final exam. Did your school tell you upfront what the requirement would be for passing your final? Was it a combination of transcription speed and accuracy? Was it pass or fail or were there numerical scores or letter grades?
I will add my opinion to others who have posted about the choice of schools. If you're looking at a school that hasn't been approved by AHDI, forget it. I realize there are a lot of cheaper schools out there. Even if the school is using an AHDI model, please save your money and wait until you can attend an AHDI-approved school. I chose a cheaper school because I had limited income. I needed to be able to work from home, not for convenience, but for health reasons. However, I got burned for making what turned out to be a really bad decision. Unfortunately, I didn't learn about this board until I was too far in the course to turn back. I will file my experience away as "lesson learned" because it will never happen again.
I chose to go through my local community college to get my certificate like my older sister had done, so my grades were based on a normal college coursework. I had multiple classes on typing, medications, anatomy and physiology, office procedures, medical law, etc, etc. I think my applied transcription course (7 credits!) my final grade was based upon my submitted transcripts and my final tests which consisted of a spelling test, a drug spelling test, and a transcription test (timed, so speed I suppose counted). But my overall pass/fail for the entire certificate was similar to any other college degree, you pass all your classes and you get the certificate.
I'm sorry you got burned, unfortunately you are not alone. Transcription courses are often a scam, which is why the profession in general I have found many laymen don't even think it is a "real job."
Good luck to you for finding a good course, if you can do classes online for your local community college I would definately urge you to try that.
