Need advice on AT-HOME PROFESSIONS - Sassy

Posted: Dec 23, 2009

Hello all. I am totally new to this board and to the medical transcripting field. I recently started taking a correspondence course to become a MT, not really knowing what I was doing or who was credible, etc. Now I am wondering if I should have chosen a different course/school. Does anyone have any knowledge of the AT-Home Professions School? Any knowledge or advice you would have to pass on to a novice would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks so much!

I don't have first hand experience with any school but I read volumes every day from posters with good/bad opinions. For a start, go to the New MTs board here, read as much as you can, and scroll down to the post Seeking The Right School.

If your not going here, from what I've learned on this site, your not going to a good school. I will say that to start. What school are you going to?

I would not say this, there is a list of by the AHDI ..sm - schools

[ In Reply To ..]
approved (appr. 20) MT schools which give, I am sure, good training in MTing. I do not know if At Home Professions is on this list.
You can research this.

I am not sure what AHDI is... sorry I am such a noobie... will you please define it so I can google it? I come up with several results when I google AHDI.

AHDI is a legend in its own mind. Take whatever it says with a saltshaker of salt. Many MTs make a very fine living without doing the silly (and expensive)AHDI dance, the main result of which has gained support for the offshoring of our jobs. You don't need AHDI. It is probably the worst thing to come down the pike for MTs.

You need to realize that although AHDI does have a "list" of approved schools, they needed to "dumb down" the list's requirements when only 2 on-line schools (Andrews School and M-TEC) were the only schools able to meet the original requirements. Kinda lets you know that being approved by AHDI really doesn't mean what it should. After that, the list became a farce, IMO. Do your homework and see which school's graduates get and keep jobs a year after finishing.

Oh wow, I am overwhelmed with the amount of information and how little I know!!! Ugh! And my school was not found in "the list" Thanks all for your input.

AHP - American MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I am a graduate of AHP, and I have been an MT for over 20 years. Granted, the AHP course was a refresher course for me because I had been out of the field for a bit, but I really thought it was quite in depth....nothing will prepare you better than on-the-job experience though...no matter what school you choose.

Thanks - Sassy

I would suggest that you check if you can receive a refund and look at an accredited school from AHDI to attend. There are some online and some brick and mortar, depends on where you live. I have knowledge of AHP and I'd give you an educated, "you are wasting your money" speech but you need to see if you can receive a refund and take your money and get a decent start to get into the field.

I graduated from AHP...it is acredited through the state of Colorado. You get a nice, well-rounded education from them. You don't receive as many "extras" (e.g. medical books, pedal, etc) but in all actuality, what I've seen that you get from other programs, I would not use the little "extras" anyway...my MDs all do microcassettes, so a USB pedal would do me no good and a general term book is relatively useless...you will want a term book that has to do with the profession of MD you work under most often! Despite others' comments, I felt AHP was a great school (a little repeditive on some areas during practice parts, but you can always customize it to what you need most. I second the previous poster...there is nothing like real life to give you the best experience...though AHP tried hard to give you the most real tapes possible! Good luck!

Get what you pay for - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
Since you have no experience with other schools, you have no way of knowing that what you received through AHP is "what I've seen that you get from other programs." I highly doubt that the training you received was of the same caliber as Andrews or M-TEC of old. Working for a small provider who still uses tapes or cassettes is definitely NOT the same as working for a national MTSO.

Thank you Sarah - Sassy

Thank you for your positive comments Sarah! You have given me hope! lol Not sure where to go from here, but your information has helped!

As someone with 41 years in this profession, I would advise you to choose some other educational program. At Home Professions will not adequately prepare you. I would recommend Andrews above all others. And no, I do not have now, nor have I ever had, any association with Andrews. I have, however, seen the quality of their grads. Remember, you get what you pay for. If you sign up for a cheapy course, you will get a cheapy education and no one will hire you. At the very least, you want a program that uses the SUM program.

Thank you - Sassy

No matter how many people post that the took the AHP course and were unable to get a job afterwards because the training was subpar, the minute a couple of people say the course is a good course, they are immediately believed. If 2 folks say it's a good course, and 200 say they couldn't get a job afterward ... I guess people just don't want to believe they have wasted their money.

I am not sure what you mean by this post or if it was for me....?

AHI - IC

[ In Reply To ..]
When I had my own accounts, I hired 3 different people who received their schooling from AHI and there was a difference in the quality of training they received from AHI compared to Andrews and MTEC. The ones from MTEC and Andrews seemed far more prepared for the real world and did not need as much coaching as the ones from AHI. In my experience, I think that it would be more difficult for one to find and keep a job coming from AHI. Not impossible, but more difficult than from the other two schools. If you are going to spend the money for schooling to be an MT, may as well go with who can give you the best education and the best chance at finding and keeping a job after graduating. Best of luck to you.

I do not have my own accounts any longer due to health reasons and needing to lower my stress level.

Thank you - Sassy

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it very much.

AHI - IC - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
The difference between the people from AHI and Andrews and M-TEC is like the difference between a Chevrolet and a Rolls-Royce. Just sayin.

I know - IC

[ In Reply To ..]
Sadly I had to let each of the 3 from AHI go because I felt I was training people off the street and did not have the time. I did keep them long enough to get some good training though so they had a chance to pass tests with other companies, but will not hire from there again as it cost me too much money in time.

I think the jobs would respect a community college course over any. - Im just saying...nm

Changing Professions
Feb 28, 2010

This message is to everyone who posts on this board, especially those who are advising/telling others to get out of the medical transcription field.  It seems that things have changed overnight with voice recognition and electronic charting but it is still very new and probably too soon to tell for sure how it will impact us.  Many of you are imagining the worst and every directive from a company or news item that appears is taken out of context and blown out of proportion by certain p ...

Change Professions Everyone - It's Time - Here's How I Did It
May 31, 2013

I started medical transcription 16 years ago - all excited and thrilled to be able to work at home.  I made $20 to $25 an hour.  It allowed me to stay home with my children and still have a good income.  16 years ago, the starting rate per line was - .06 per line.  Which is now STILL the starting rate for many companies.  A few lucky old souls out there may get .09 or even .10 a line.  However, when I started, all we did was straight typing.  No pasting notes, ...

For Those On Disability Who Need To Change Professions (sm)

After I became disabled I went to the state Department of Rehabilitation and was amazed how much help they offer people who need to train for new careers.  The one I went do did complete testing to identify work limitations, gave tests for aptitude and desire for certain types of work, gave career counseling and even offered to pay for training programs, books, and software needed to change professions.  So for those who are disabled and working part time because of it, you might want ...
