Giving lines back - Jenny

Posted: Sep 13, 2012

I just took a job that said they paid 3.2 cpl for edited and 6.8 for transcribed.  Almost everything is edited.  Now they want me to divide my edited line count by half and claim that as my edited line count, not the total number of edited lines I do.  Has anyone else been told this kind of stuff?  I can't believe it!  If I do this I only get paid 1.6 cpl for my edited lines.  I am flabergasted!  I can't live off that in America, who could?

Why do I suspect this is not one of the usual US MTSO? Is this - an OS MTSO? But really, this is illegal. nm

1/2 line count? - Alice

I don't know which company you are talking about, but I've been at companies where the edited lines each count as 1/2 when figuring total line count, but I was still paid the 3.2 cents (or whatever it was quoted) per edited line. They only used this 1/2 stuff for figuring total lines.

For instance, at Focus Infomatics (old Nuance), 24,000 lines per month were required in order to maintain full-time status. However, each edited line counted as 1/2 each. So, if ALL of my lines were edited/VR, then I would have to complete 48,000 per month in order to maintain full-time status.

IMHO, it is confusing and ridiculous, but that is the way it was. It did not involve cutting the pay rate per edited line AGAIN by 1/2 of what each edited line was to pay.

It seems to me, if they are asking you to multiply the rate for your pay for your edited lines by 1/2, then you would take the 1/2 from the straight-transcription line rate. For instance, 1/2 of 6.4 equals 3.2.

If they are really trying to pay you only 1.6 cpl for edited lines, something is seriously wrong, and I wonder how you would be able to even make minimum wage. It does seem very illegal if this is the case.

This company specifically said to take edited lines and multiply by .46 (basically half) and that resultant number was the converted amount to put on pay sheet to be paid for. For example, 1400 x .46 = 644 payable converted lines. I don't understand ths at all. Can anyone give me any positive understanding of this? I too had new rules handed down. Does anyone else work for SGS, am I misunderstanding their instructions?
Sounds like they are just trying to pay for what - sm - INKMT

is corrected changed, and basing on the assumption that you correct/change close to 50% of the report only so therefore you only get to claim half (well 46%)....so no "freebies". That sucks. I do editing too but get the whole report, in general I change less than half the report so I get a lot of lines I did not actually type.

Just sounds like a new way to screw the MT, make sure we get nothing extra in your case, and not "beating" their system. Where one goes the others will follow, guess it is a matter of time before they all do this in order to (1) save the customer money and (2) a new way to make more money for themselves while charging the patient for all the lines (or 75% of them and still make extra on the back of the MT).
Meant to say "charging the client" - nm - INKMT

Hi. I work for SGS. I don't think you are understanding correctly. First of all, I'm only an MT, so GO TO YOUR TEAM LEAD for clarification because even though I think I understand it, I don't want to be responsible for giving you wrong information.

If you work an hour and do, for example 300 edited lines, you divide that by 0.46 and get 138 lines. They simply want you to be able to do a minimum of 100 edited lines per hour, so this means, you would be okay as far as their minimum production standards. In no way do you put 138 on your time sheet. You put 300 lines in the editing column, and you get paid whatever your CPL per line is X 300, not X 138. Hope that helps.

And also Jenny.. - Lyn

Also, if you happen to transcribe lines, not edit them, you don't divide them by 0.46 to determine your hourly production rate. For example, let's say you do 300 lines per hour, 0.46 to equal 138 edited lines AND you did 50 straight transcription lines, your hourly production would be 188 lines that hour (above the 100 they expect minimally). To my knowledge, they don't really police this and heckle you about it, but they want you to make sure you're regularly trying to hit the minimum.

Back To Missing Lines

MQ uses Instant Text for their line counts.  I knew i had it for word expanders but prefer to use my own WEs.  Well, they have a line counter too but I haven't had the time to check it out. So, today, I took about 5 documents, copied and pasted them into Word.  MQ requires 65 CPL, Word requires 73, so I should have come out behind in Word each time.  Instead, I came out behind in every document, the least being amount 11 lines and the most was 29.  T ...

Is It True That FOCUS, Only Counts Half Of Your Lines When Calculating VR Lines?
Jan 30, 2012

if you make 4 cents per line at 1000 lines a day, they really calculate it at 500 lines per day x 4 cents, making it really 2 cents per line for the full 1000.   I heard this, and I am really interested in knowing if it is true. ...

Told Nuance Was Overcharging For Lines, Now Lines Drastically Reduced
May 02, 2012

My main account was a good one, and the lines were very good, mostly ER work. I have been on this account for over a year and a half now. We recently received an e-mail stating that Nuance had discovered that the line count was charging incorrectly, as instituted by them, and they had been crediting us with MORE lines than we were actually doing and overcharging the client. Now get this, they informed us that they would not make US pay it back, for their mistake, but that our new lines would re ...

TransTech Lines - Required Hours But Are Short Lines?
Jun 10, 2011

What do you do when you have the required hours but are short lines? I got an email that I need to "make plans to have my shortage made up." The only problem is that I'm up to date with my hours for the pay period so far. The other problem is that I have plans Saturday night and Sunday (both being my scheduled time off) that don't include TransTech. It's getting harder and harder to defend this company when they can't hold up their end of the agreement and continually ...

TransTech Lines - How Many Lines Do You Average During The Day/week?
Jan 19, 2011

Just wondering if the TT MTs would like share ... how many lines do you average during the day/week?  I'm doing about 9,000 to 10,000 a week and wonder if I should be pushing myself more.  How much of your count is VR?  I do probably 15% traditional and 85% VR but that, of course, varies week to week.   ...

Giving Notice Vs Being Fired
Dec 23, 2011

I see a lot of confusion here lately.  Let me clear things up.   I know we all think of it as quitting in advance, but that's not the case, even if you tell them "I'm going to quit in 2 weeks."  When you give your notice, whether it's 1 day, 2 weeks, or a month in advance, you're essentially saying "I quit, but if you need time to find a replacement, I'm willing to stay for x amount of time."  This is just a courtesy.  If they decline your offe ...
