Getting back into MT at a National... - Backinthegame

Posted: Nov 11, 2010

I tried to post this on the company board but I guess that was the wrong place.  So I am sorry for having made that error.  I'm new to the forum, so I do apologize for any mistakes I make posting going forward  and well in advance of making them.  I do hope that I am putting this on the right board; however, if I am not some direction in that regard would be appreciated as well.  Where does a post like this belong exactly?  I do need some objective help with this or I wouldn't be posting on a forum, so anything anyone could offer is appreciated.

Also, i want to be clear that I understand and can empathize with many of you who are so very unhappy with the way MT has evolved, especially those of you who have lost your livelihood to offshore concerns or VR.  I do get it and it's horrific what's been done to what was once such a great field to be in.  Often, I wake up and wonder where exactly did it all go so wrong.  Where exactly or what exactly was that defining moment and how is it that no one managed to see it coming, but I guess all things change and not always for the better.

With that being said, I am looking to get back into the MT field at a National at the moment due to life changes and the fact I'm just tired of being the head bottle washer and diaper changer 24/7 with no job security to speak of, crazy expensive insurance costs, crazy expensive business taxes, etc., and all the other drama that goes along with having your own business on a full-time basis.   I've considered and am preparing to take the CMT and possibly the RMT, and I've been reading through the boards here and on other forums trying to get an idea of what the outlook is at the moment.  I guess what I've managed to gather thus far, is that after 24+ years being my own boss I'm going to be considered a newbie going back in, which I guess I'm fine with, but it would be great to hear from any of you who have faced similar hurdles/obstacles when coming back to the field after working on your own accounts/business for so many years and coming back on a 3/4 times basis for benefit purposes.  Are there any specific places that would be preferable/more desirable to work at in terms of benefits than others?  Any guidance on that front would be greatly appreciated.  Also, I guess any thoughts that y'all might have on the CMT and RMT certifications would be greatly appreciated as well.

I've thought long and hard about this and although I will be keeping some of my small accounts, I need the benefits and job security that being an employee provides at the moment, so I really don't have much of choice but to go this route at least for the time being.

I really hope to hear from some of you that have faced similar life change issues that have put you on the same or a similar path to the one that I find myself on.  I guess I'm looking for advice on the best way to go about making the transition, how to best traverse the road ahead, how to best organize myself, etc.  Please feel free to e-mail me privately and thanks in advance for anyone out there who decides to the time to respond or e-mail.  I'm forever grateful and indebted to anyone who comes forward with anything even closely resembling sage advice.

I'm in the same situation. 25 years on the job and still working for a few private physicians, but need more income. The way I see it, there is no other choice than to work for one of these big online companies. I don't need the benefits because the DH's job takes care of that, but I need the added income. I lost two very busy nephrologists to an electronic records system through the community hospital so that took a huge bite out of my paycheck. Fortunately, my two remaining orthopaedic surgeons and dermatologists are older and like their tapes with pickup and delivery. I think I'm safe with them until they retire.

Anyway, I'll be watching to see if you get any good advice. I think the transition for me will be more of a technical challenge than anything to do with the actual transcription.

It would be nice to hear someone post about a positive experience with one of these companies. I find it hard to read so many negative comments while contemplating jumping in with both feet. Unfortunately, I have no choice.

Good luck! I'll be waiting to see if you get any encouraging responses.

It'll definitely be interesting to see what kind of responses I will get. It's very discouraging to see all the negative stuff, but then again that takes me back to the whole where did it go so wrong and how is it that no one saw it coming questions that no one seems to be able to agree on. When you're young changing careers is easy but for those of us that having been doing this since the Jurassic age it's not so easy to do.

I was wondering where you went - Love My Job

I had tried to email you and was unable to. If you want to email me, I saved the long post I wrote you yesterday :)

You tried to e-mail me? I'm confused, which is nothing new by the way. ;-)

:) No, my response was in reply to the OP - Love My Job

I have no advice for getting your own accounts, which sounds like what you are doing, whereas the original poster is giving up that gig and going to be a worker bee, if I understand correctly.

So to the OP, I have some suggestions but because of the negative responses to anyone who posts positive messages on here, I won't share them publicly.

That is my situation exactly. I have some accounts, but I've lost a few and now will have to supplement my income by going to work for a big MTSO. I'm none too happy about it, but desperate times call for desperate measures. ;-)

I'm of the same opinion about the positive posts here. Feel free to e-mail me with some positive thoughts. I am in dire need since I have read nothing but discouraging posts about working for a big online company. My knees are knocking to be quite honest and I find myself procrastinating in sending in all my paperwork to start work on 11/29. Gah!

I'm not giving up all my accounts, just retired/retiring the bigger ones at the end this next quarter, and I'm tired of the 24/7, crazy expensive business costs, so it's time to get back into a regular job where I can get benes, two days off a week, and have half the stress. E-mail me I would love to hear from you...

I Took An IC Job With A National And Haven't Really Ever Worked As An IC Before.
Apr 29, 2012

Basically, it's been working out fine until one day last week when I received an email from the transcription manager saying that was "short on my time" on one specific day.  I was confused because while I agreed to work first shift on specific days, I wasn't aware that I was strictly held to a specific schedule and wondered how they were keeping track of my hours worked because I do not punch a time clock.  I assume they are keeping track of the hours I'm logged onto th ...

A Matter Of National Security?
Sep 28, 2012

With the nature of world affairs and US relations such as they are, I can't help but think how wrong it is for companies in general, but specifically MTSOs, to be sending highly sensitive information overseas the way they do. It scares me to think about my social security number, date of birth, address, etc. being handled by someone who doesn't necessarily feel the sense that they must protect that information. Maybe instead of complaining about how much work is being offshored, we s ...

Sep 24, 2010

Guess they took over for the stork?  My ASR has also taken a holiday from all small words today:  is, was, the, and, then, etc.  I guess it has been threatened to be more productive also.  Just skip half the words and voila -- twice the production.  That gets really tedious hour after hour.  Disclaimer:  I am happy to have a job.  Do not wish to find another one.  Too old for career change.  Thank you. ...

discuss your pay in public as much as you would like. It is the law.  It does not matter if you have signed a nondisclosure statement on salary as that is not legal. If you are fired for talking about your salary you have legal grounds for compensation. Of course distributing copyrighted material is illegal, but you can talk about your work concerns and salary in public. It is the law no matter what a company tells you. NATIONAL MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST STRIKE! ..
Feb 19, 2015

As MTs, we have seen over the years how our jobs just keep bottoming out more or less.  Companies are taking advantage of us while they "suck up all the money" that is paid out by healthcare facilities; we just "don't count."  On top of that, companies are now trying to turn us into ICs supplying our own software programs AND equipment.  In 25 years of doing this, I have not seen line count pay increase one iota quite frankly.  The only thing I can think of is ...

Anybody Have Experience With National Medical Transcription Company?
Oct 07, 2010

I received a job interview for an IC position with a company called National Medical Transcription with headquarters in New York.  Has anybody worked with this company? My main concern was that the company does not offer direct deposit but rather issues a check via mail.  Next concern is a "transparent" means of tallying up productivity for 65 character lines and spaces included. I would appreciate any feedback from present or past contractors. Thank you. ...

We Need To Establish A National "Check Your Medical Records" Day
Jan 03, 2010

Think about it; there are national days for Everything. If patients were made aware of their ability and need to check and verify their medical information, may the problems of ILPs and ASR (and EMR) would become noteworthy outside our little MT community. I wonder how we could start it.  Maybe you need to petition Congress or something. Heck, if there is a national day to check the 9-volt battery in your smoke detector, a national day set aside to verify the accuracy of your medical inf ...

Back To Work After Back Surgery
Aug 23, 2012

Hello, I would like to transcribe from home again. However, I HAVE to get up and walk for a few minutes at least once an hour. You see, I had to have 2 back surgeries in the last 18 months. I've been a transcriptionist for many years and this is my profession. Does anyone have a suggestion what to tell these companies that will hire you to work from home when you have to get up so much? The last company I tried had a "pop-up" box that appeared on my screen if you were up longer than 10 min ...

Getting Back In To MT

Thanks so much for any advice!
