Question about working and traveling? - Mookster

Hello, everyone and Happy Holidays. I have a question. I am an MT here at MQ and have a company computer at home. Thing is, I see a lot of traveling in my future. Do any of you other fabulous MTs work both at home and on the road via laptop? How does that work for you? Were your supes open to it? If this is not a good thing or is very problematic, I really don't know what I am going to do. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have actually packed up the company supplied computer (footpedal and the whole sheebang) and taken it on the road using Verizon air card. Some places the reception wasn't terrific, slow but was there. Quite honestly, I never asked, just did it - so do what you are comfortable with in that regard. But definitely is doable.

Thanks, Can Do. Really appreciate it. My laptop tanked and I need to get a new one so I figured well, lets see if you "can do" on the road. Great idea of packing the desktop, though....TY

Okay there times when I have to babysit or visit family out of town. I used my laptop for everything. I just kept my same hours but was able to enjoy famly time / vacation.

I never had to tell anyone since I clocked in and out on my laptop.

With the new schedule source, they probaby have to download all that for you.

PS my lap top was vista and all you have to do is go into into administration box and allow MQ data to be downloaded.

But it worked. In fact, I have had to give my daughter my lap top for school use and in all honesty I miss it. I was able to work while at the beach/pool.

I would love to use my laptop when I am out of town, but I was told we couldn't have the MQ programs downloaded to our personal PCs.

Last time my company computer crashed, there was a couple of days delay before they could get a new one to me. My super begged me to put MQ program on my personal computer so I could continue to work, which we did. It worked just fine. That was before Schedule Source though, so didn't have that or Lotus Notes for e-mail but did have the ability to transcribe and send/receive reports just fine.

Call tech support. They can walk you through it. - Did it earlier this year.

I received a laptop for my b'day, called support, and they helped me download everything, including Schedule Source. Unfortunately, we're now too broke to go anywhere since NJA but if things ever pick up, I intend to take it with me camping...

Someone told you wrong or either was too lazy to help you.

I feel better now at least. I was wondering what I was going to do if I wasn't able to work on the road. I guess I will call tech support before I purchase a laptop just to be sure there won't be a problem with a certain operating system, etc. Happy Holidays!!!!

I've heard about MTs packing up their computers when they go on vacation, even someone who travels around with a motor home and brings the work right along. Can anyone explain to me how you do this? I mean, I assume you have to work off a laptop or maybe even just have a computer that's easy to haul around, but how do you hook up to an internet connection? The motels I've gone to have the "free internet" but is that all it takes? Can any of you enlighten me ...

I was wondering how it's done. I have two days a year when I'm not available to work because of a family reunion. Since most of the fun doesn't start until after 12 but we have to be there very early because of the committees we're on, I hate to waste that time doing nothing when I could be working. I have an odd question. If a US trained Medical Transcriptionist works from home (in the U.S.), but then decides to spend 1/2 the year (or more) in a foreign country, is it possible (ethical/legal) to continue working as an MT while in that country? The MT would keep the US address, and bank account. All paychecks would continue to be direct deposited into current U.S. bank account. MT would continue to pay U.S. taxes on all monies earned. I know I am not the only one working 2 jobs or more. Between them I am scheduled 68 hours per week. I have them spread out enough I have "long breaks" in between to fix supper, take a little me time out around the lunch hour and housework kind of gets slighted.
