One thing I have realized about ASR - mmworker

Posted: Aug 09, 2012

My mind can wander and zone out because it's like listening to somebody read you the same story all day long!  When I actually had to think while typing--how to minimize my keystrokes for maximum output--it kept me more alert and "tuned in."

You're exactly right.... - (see message)

I also find it extremely difficult to stay focused on ASR for long, long hours for the same reason you mentioned. When you find you need to stop and take a break from it every once in a while, either your production drops too much or else you clock out every time you need to step away and end up needing to devote 10+ hours to 8 hours' worth of work....but of course, that's only if you're provided with a solid 8 hours' worth of work without NJA throughout the day!

You also can't take your eyes off the screen or close them for a few moments like you can when you're transcribing. It's very tedious and should pay more than 4 cpl, that's for sure!

I have actually gotten use to it - because

one of my accounts is strictly straight typing so there are days I dont see much of it and there are days where its ALL I SEE.

But on the days I do get it I find that I actually welcome it which is weird because I didn't like it at all before. Now I breeze right through.

I think it varies with your accounts because VR does really well on my accounts and I whip in and out of the reports using my shortcuts like nobody's business.

I do worse than zone out - I fall asleep! Esp. since - co. wants us to make few, if any changes.

It's kinda like watching paint dry.

I don't like having to keep eyes on the screen at all times. - When I straight

I could look out the window or have the TV on mute and look at it. Not always having to look at the screen every minute. Makes me tired.

You Know, I Just Realized Something....
Jun 09, 2014

I really do not like being a negative person, but just tonight I realized how this profession has changed me.   I used to be a happy, upbeat person and now I find myself becoming fatigued, negative and bitter.  It's like being in an unhappy marriage :(  I have no faith in companies doing the right thing anymore or treating people like they are people and rewarding people who are conscienous about their job with raises.  I don't like giving this profession this ...

Just Realized
Nov 12, 2014

30 years ago today.  I had my own office and my own set of doctors.  Everyone was so kind and helpful that day.  Fast forward 30 years and I feel like a total failure, making probably about as much as I did that day.  All of my non-MT friends have retired and have lake property.  Wow, I sure made a wrong turn! ...

Just Realized What I Really Hate About ASR.
Jul 14, 2010

I was just chatting with someone about transcription and ASR (it's been about 3 months since we switched) and it came to me what my biggest problem with it is.  We have no control over it.  With regular transcription, we are only limited by the quality of the dictation the sound.  The harder we work at perfecting our typing skills and our system of word expansions, etc., the faster we can work.  I spent 3 years getting to where there are very few words longer then 4 lett ...

Never Realized How Bad Cherrypicking Is
Jan 14, 2014

Just the other day I was given better access to Fluency Manager.  I used to only see US work in my region.  Now, I can see it all.  Anyway, I saw a stat job in the backlog that was almost going late and with the low amount of work, it really should have been typed by then.  Out of curiosity, I checked the Job Audit on it through manager.  This job was discarded a total of 6 times by 3 different MTs.  Two of them did it once, and one did it 4 times.  These were ...

I Have Realized The Truth Of The MT Industry Situation
Jun 06, 2015

I've been coming here for years. For many years it was only the poorly trained MTs who complained about not doing well. Anyone who had good training and good skills, sometimes learned on the job, which isn't practical now, but good skills at any rate, did well. The times have changed. While I used to categorize the complainers as neer-do-wells because they lacked ambition, accuracy, and training, that just isn't the case anymore. The employers have beat MTs down so that they can ...

I Looked At My Count Thus Far For "incentive" Weekend And Realized
Mar 07, 2011

My lph doing ASR is the same as my lph for straight typing!! - I'm not a fast typist anymore - hands a bit stiff at my old age. I've tried everything, including only using the keyboard and no mouse. Just too much stopping and starting - at least 3 times a line. And if it's a correction, extra time needed to highlight and type over. It felt so good to get a couple typing jobs as I had some continuity going - none of this herky jerky of stop-start-stop....... I've got my res ...

One More Thing!
Mar 11, 2010

Just one more thought.  I have never, ever, known anyone who has left Medquist or Spheris and regretted it.  They may bounce back and forth just to get by, but in the long run, when they are finally finished, they are finished.  For all of those MTs who don't want to start over, please don't take that attitude.  I did and it only got worse and when I did change it wasn't that bad at all.  Again, could it get any worse?  ...

I Did The Right Thing It Seems
May 02, 2010

Now I know I did the right thing in not only leaving the Q but leaving the field altogether.  I had another physical last week and my blood pressure was back down to 120/70, and my doctor was very happy when he learned I had quit. They wasted no time in sending me labels to ship the computer back, though.  Oh well.. they don't want the monitor, or mouse, or keyboard, so I'm keeping those! ...

Jul 13, 2013

Urine welkenton?  Not sure of spelling, since I'm not sure it's really a word.  They could also be saying welkington.  That's what the dictation sounds like and I've listened to it several times on numerous days.  Can't find a reference to it anywhere and I've tried many variations.  Wondering if it's a really old term or if I'm completely misunderstanding.   Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ...

One More Thing Before I Go
Nov 23, 2013

I do believe now that they are starting to target those of us who were making 10/6.  In the past, on my old accounts, I was audited no more than once a month.  If I failed an occasional audit, they would wait another month to see how I did on that one and since I always passed, no action was taken.  There was also no action after I took more than the allowable time off.  Then, at the beginning of November, I was moved to another BOB.  After being on the account for less ...

And Here's One Other Thing!
Apr 01, 2015

Just had a doctor dictate "potassium 40 mg," (should have been mEq) and then further down, "Levemir 40 mg" (should have been units). If I had not left blanks for them, that would have been 6 points off. It also compelled me to use my allotment of blanks for that report! But they, of course, do not get penalized for their mistakes. On the other hand, our pay is docked. There is a double standard here that needs to be changed. ...

The university down the street will be offering an undergraduate degree in Arabic.  It is one of only 3 offer in this country.  Now THAT ought to be useful.  Sometimes, if you already have an undergraduate degree, they let you skip the basics and finish in 2 yrs.  I would certainly consider that, especially since there appears to be no end in sight to our troubles with Arab-speaking countries. ...

OMG! This May Just Be The Most Annoying Thing
Oct 20, 2010

that I have had in a dictation, and I am sure that the dictator (PA-C)  is annoyed as well.  It's always annoying when she chitty-chats with the "girls in the office" while dictating, but in this dictation, one of the girls is mocking back everything the dictator says and continues to do so, after a little chuckle from dictator each time, to the point where the dictator finally has to tell her that this is important, it is for an attorney and she cannot mess it up.  ...
