A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
I've been a transcriptionist for 29 years, the last 14 of which have been working from home. My husband used to always carry me on his insurance but he lost his job (the plant closed down where he worked) and he has subsequently gone on disability. He's 62, and is soon to be on Medicare. I need insurance in a bad way, but I've tried and I just can't maintain 150 lines an hour. I manage between 125-150. I think holding us to a quota like this and a 98% accuracy to get insurance should be illegal, but it's not up to me. In what other profession do they do this? I don't know of any. I've really been depressed lately. It saddens me to leave a profession I have invested this many years in. When I worked in a hospital setting I got nothing but praises for my work, and I actually got raises, which are practically non-existent when you're an at-home transcriptionist. There's no sense in suggesting a private policy. I've check into it, and I can't afford it. The hospital I used to work at now outsources to Spheris. I really want to keep working from home. Any suggestoins? I guess I'm on a pity party tonight. At this point if anyone asked me about MT as a career field, I would say if you need insurance go into something else you're an extremely fast and accurate typist. It seems like this career field is geared towards women who don't have to worry about being insured, which is okay until your husband loses his job. It seems somewhat discriminatory to me. Oh, and all these companies show in the ads that they have a good employee benefits package. They just don't tell you all the details about actually getting it. What a laugh.
