Has anyone ever been denied time off when they had reservations already in place? - Frecklefart

Why do they say we can apply for time off 60 days in advance when they are going to wait until the month of to approve it. I have had these reservations since September, as most people do plan ahead, especially when reservations are needed. I would just work at the hotel room, but I will need to be traveling during the time I would be working. I am freaking out, I don't know what to do.

they tell us time and time again to not make any reservations until your requests have been approved, so i've always waited for that before i've made any. sometimes an email letting them know you need to know sooner rather than later can help, but i don't think i would risk doing anything unless they have approved it. we are slaves.

You can call in sick, power went out, cable went out, issues with computer. I don't work for your company but all of these have worked for all of us at my company.

If they can lie to us about everything, so can we.

I don't know what your companies policy is if power goes out or cable goes out but I am sure it has happened to all of us at one time or another and that is always my backup plan.

They don't pay us enough to be slaves with - no vacation time. She should GO.

that telling someone to JUST GO have their vacation without being sure it is approved would be the same as telling someone to walk off the job. i'd hate to see someone lose this pathetic job over something like bad advice.

You'll feel better if you actually get the approval than by trying to think of ways to try to stay out of trouble while you're gone.

Be sure and let them know you made the request x number of days ago (probably during the transition period) and so you realize it probably was overlooked, but now you need to make reservations and are starting to have some anxiety due to not hearing back, etc.

my relatives in Europe during a big family get-together they had planned. Got my plane tickets, etc. Then, 2 weeks before I was set to leave, my boss, who was fully aware I'd booked this vacation time way in advance, started giving me a hard time about it. I produced copies of my application and her signature that approved the time off. She then proceeded to tell me how "lucky" I was that she was "letting" me take the time off, and that she "couldn't guarantee" I would still have a job when I returned. I replied that I could find another job, but a special family event such as this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially since I'd never been to Europe before. Then I said, "I'll just take my chances, then."

Of course, it was an empty threat, and my job was still there when I got back. I think part of the reason she was giving me grief about the dates I'd be off was that it was in August, I was single with no kids, and lots of the MTs with families wanted those same two weeks off. I guess she thought she could bully me into not going, so she could give one of her Pet Employees those two weeks, instead. Too bad, so sad --- then they should have applied 6 months early, like I did!

I would explain that I requested off long ago and had to go ahead and make my reservations. I think I would say since it wasn't denied immediately, after a period of time I assumed it would be approved. I can't say how it will go; some of the managers are quite reasonable, others aren't. I did the same thing. Requested 2 weeks back at the end of Sept or first of Nov. I e-mailed my manager and she told me to go ahead and enter it. I simply explained we needed to go ahead and make the reservation with a deposit, and the remainder had to be paid the first of Dec. The first week has been approved, but not the second.

I am just assuming they do not approve this PTO so far ahead of time because of how the pay periods fall. Also, they probably want to make sure you are actually going to have that time available. Since it is so far ahead of time, what if you got sick, or had a death in the family, etc.

If you e-mailed her and there was communication between you about it, I would not worry about it too much. She is probably planning on it, but cannot actually approve it yet.

What I Did - Before I Quit

I quit a couple of years ago, but what I used to do was, make the reservations, let supe know I had reservations for whatever week/weeks I wanted off, then wrote: "If I don't hear back from you within 1 day, I will assume my time off is approved." If I didn't hear back from her within 1 day (which usually I didn't), I went ahead with my plans.

That's about all you can do. We used to go away once a year to the same hotel, and we needed to make reservations 6 months in advance, or we might not get the room. I would just make those plans, then send my suggestion above as it got closer.
