Well paying coding jobs will go away - Golden Oldie

Just like well paying transcription has. The coders won't admit it, but it will happen.

The mention of "increased productivity" and - "automated workflow" would -sm

make me more than just a little nervous if I were a current or up-and-coming coder. And "Back To The Future" in my mind certainly does imply, at least, that the same thing will happen to coding as happened to MT. Maybe at a different speed, or in a different way, but M*M is all about wanting its MONEY. No matter what it claims to morph itself into, at the end of the day it's still going to be all about sucking the jobs out of hospitals, squeezing every last dime they can out of their workers, and crushing the competition with low bids and fast turnaround.

I'm noticing at the hospital where I work that when the operations are scheduled, the code automatically assigns itself. This could be both good and bad as very little is consistent in surgery.
smart docs look up the codes themselves - Old School
[ In Reply To ..]
They know exactly how to phrase the name of the operation, and they know the corresponding code, to make sure they get paid correctly.
Much easier to look up a code than transcribe an entire report IMHO. - nm

oh well don't let them hear you say that - we dont understand
[ In Reply To ..]
The concept of coding is much too complex for us to grasp, but I understand it is a lot more than looking up codes in a book. That would not be "real" coding. ;)
Coding is not done from the name of the - operation.
[ In Reply To ..]
It is done from the narrative description of the procedure.

If a physician submits codes that match the name, and the narrative does not support it, it is fraud, and that can be a federal crime.

narrative - mt

Doesn't this kind of shoot down the theory that point and click can take over the transcription profession?
Explanation -- this is not the final coding. - sm

The code may "automatically assign itself," but there are two things you don't know about this.

First, it was a coding professional who worked with surgery to determine what codes to use in that computerized system. Coding jobs are not just at the tail end of things . . . some work BEFORE things happen. This is nothing new, either.

Second, that code isn't necessarily the code that the facility or the surgeon will use. It is more likely to be an internal code that can be changed after coding's review.

This is akin to a "chargemaster," or a computerized list of services and their corresponding codes. One of the coding jobs you might not be aware of is "chargemaster development."

I happen to do this for my facility. I can assure you that it is not a sign of coding "going away." It is a higher-level job that coders can advance into. Chargemaster development, along with other electronic coding functions like charge ticket/superbill development, is still coding. We still have both inpatient and outpatient coders.

Thanks for clearing that up as I was concerned about possible fraud. Coding is a tough job and one I'm not really suited for.

The coders will not admit that well paying coding jobs will go away because they do not make management decisions. They are only workers like MTs. When it comes to pay cuts, downsizing, layoffs, outsourcing, offshoring, etc., etc. only management knows, and we MTs already know how ruthless management can be. They will go into the hospitals and convince hospital administrators that outsourcing coding jobs, just like medical transcription jobs will save their organizations a lot of money--and to management, that is all that matters.

This is not a seminar, it is an advertisement. - sm

Co-workers Signing Off Shift Early
May 16, 2011

Do any of you have this problem? There are several us on one particularly account. They will either sign off 5-6 hours into their 8 hr shift (saying they've met their minimum quota)or sometimes on weekends just leave work not done til the next day. I have the last shift and have to stay until all docs are finished no matter how late. Therefore, I get "mop up" duty every day. Any helpful suggestions? Oh, by the way, they "cherry pick" the short reports and I get left with the extremely long ...

Proof Docs Don't Review Before Signing
Sep 26, 2011

Just typed a letter to a peer review committee regarding a discrepancy in an operative report and a discharge summary.  The doctor gave the explanation that it was simply a typographical error either from his mumbling or unclear dictation, and that the dx listed in the discharge summary did not make sense and he would not dictate that. Yes, he actually admitted it could have been from his mumbling.  But, why didn't he catch that incorrect diagnosis when he signed the discharge sum ...

Doc Manually Signing A Letter Or Chart Note
Jul 14, 2010

I work for 9 specialty docs so I type a lot of letters.   Two of the docs have me stamp their outgoing letters with their name.  One doc has a manual signature line.  Our physician insurance company representative was recently here doing an audit and said that is not legal and that the docs must sign each and every letter or at least initial them.  Can you tell me if she is correct?  Is there somewhere where I can actually get some documentation as to the ...
