Do they every throw mistakes in for job testing (that need to blank)? There were no instructions.

I've had to leave at least 1 blank, and sometimes more, in most tests. - sm

Usually for inaudibility. I've passed all tests and been offered a position for most (all?) that I've ever taken, so I believe most MTSOs want to see what you'll really do in a situation like that, which is hopefully *not* guessing. If they are the kind of MTSO who prefer you to leave absolutely no blanks, do you really want to work for them anyway?

If they use the same dictations repeatedly for testing - they should be aware of these issues.

Presumably, they would have seen blanks in the same places from previous candidates. It can be helpful to clarify their expectations before testing - do they want "strict verbatim", should you make corrections when obvious (e.g., hemoglobin and hematocrit values switched), etc.

Of course it depends on who you're testing for.... Back in 2008, when I tested for the (alas) long-gone TRS, I left some blanks. I had to. The recruiter later told me that they purposely included test dictations with bad spots, just to see what people would do. Those bad spots were such that NOBODY could make them out, it was NOT something that could be guessed at (such as "hemoglobin 12.4,BEEPcrit 38.9" in which case you could safely guess) and if applicants went ahead and guessed anyway, they were not considered for the job. I don't specifically recall whether there were any specific instructions given with the test. I think the expectation was to do as you would do in the real world, where unless it's REALLY obvious such as the example given above, you do NOT guess. As I used to say to my trainees, mind-reading is WAY above our pay grade, so never EVER guess.

I have a dictator who dictates the same thing every time and it is fairly clear, but I can't verify it despite looking at a lot of ocular testing sites. Why in the heck don't employers give you at least some basic instructions for a transcription test? Some want you to format, others don't. Some want you to edit punctuation, etc., others want you to transcribe verbatim. It's very frustrating because they all seem to want something different, yet most don't bother to give instructions. It's like they expect us to be mindreaders! ...

for MT jobs that were ridiculous as in you basically need to be a doctor to pass, but I took a pretest just to take the coding course and it was ridiculous, as well. I sure felt like emailing them and saying nevermind, I would not consider taking a course that you have to be a doctor just to do coding!! Very frustrating!!!! ...

I got an invitation to test for a transcription company. This company does not do any doctor's notes, but they do other medical type work such as meetings, etc. On their site they have 3 tests and you can do all or as many as you feel comfortable doing. I downloaded one of the tests to check it out and it is almost 30 minutes long. I am ambivilent about taking such a long test with no compensation just for them to decide if I can do the work. I am so depressed. I guess I am trying to vent to you guys. I have taken 4 tests for companies and failed all of them. I didnt even get an answer back from one. I have been doing this for years. I cannot seem to pass these MT tests to save my life. I spent all last week testing. I've been informed I've failed four tests. I've passed Nuance and M*Modal's test, which is pretty much the same as a few other tests I've taken but failed. I've also taken two other tests that were not the mttest, but failed those as well. Utterly confused. I took a big, BIG hit with the QA deduction in paycheck this week. So, I decided to investigate. Like everyone else, I have about 10 "regular" accounts. No blank rule is mentioned anywhere on any of the Account Specifics. I wrote the QA person for my CMC questioning how many blanks were acceptable without sending to QA, and got the "first time right" explanation. This is BOGUS...if I have one blank on a lengthy report and hafta send to QA and they take the total line ...

I got a complaint from corporate that my lph are not where they should be via my TSM. I have been at MModal 6 weeks and just got off training. I was hired in at tier 3. My lph are gradually going up every day but not to suit corporate. I do straight transcription, no VR, on Futurenet. A lot of ESL bad dictators. I am still getting new dictators every day I work. Don't you just hate transcription tests that are TIMED and you start listening to the audio, and the audio is so bad that you just feel and know that you are going to flunk it? What do you do, then? Do you continue and count your blessings or do you just exit? I very much appreciate your answers. thanks! ...
