Schooling - Chrisi

I went to Kaplan University Online and really enjoyed it. I feel that I learned a lot and was mostly prepared for what I would face as new MT. There are a lot of different schools to choose from but I would recommend a degree program of some sort as opposed to just a certificate or a few transcription classes. Also, remember to check and make sure that it is a reliable and trustworthy school before you sign anything.

Transcription is an enjoyable thing but it is not always easy. You have to know a lot about punctuation usage and word usage, I finished my schooling and am still far from perfect.

Once you finish school you will have to look for work, and right now it is really hard to start out. Most companies are trying to meet their client demands and need experienced MTs to do that because they do not have the time to train, and yes even after schooling you will need some training.

If this is what you really want to do just make sure that you are doing it because it is the right thing for you to do and not because you think it will be all easy work and a lot of money, because if you cannot work accurately and quickly at the same time you wont make a lot of money, especially starting out.

I started working about a month after I finished schooling, but after six months am back on the job market for many reasons; one of which was low work load, there just was not enough work for everyone to get their share. You just really have to look for work, do well on the application tests, and just keep at it.

Good luck.

How much did Kaplan cost?

What kind of internship did they offer?

I am assuming it was online. How long did it take to finish?

I ask these questions because I taught MT at a private college in Tulsa, OK. (I had a few ideas I thought would help train MTs - make them more employable right off the bat.) :D

I found out some things about schools, especially if they get Title IV money (Pell grants and student loans), staying eligible for those are their driving force. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING else is secondary if it is even considered at all.

Our schooling was 9 months long and cost about 9,000 dollars. Man, did they get put through the paces. 6-week courses meeting 4 days a week for 2 hours. We would have 2 3-4 chapter tests a week. Whew! They suggested a 40-hour interneship, did not guarantee it. That is one week of experience or on-the-job training. (Everybody laugh now.) Of course, the joke was on the students.
:(

My emphasis was on the work experience, the internships, putting something on a resume, but the school just patronized me and went on. Their machine wasn't broken, people were paying money, it didn't NEED fixing.

I finally had to quit the school. I waited a year; otherwise, useless to put it on my resume. I STILL have a bad taste in my mouth after that experience.

I ask the questions above because I am planning on selling an MT training kit. Because even though there are a WHOLE LOT OF GRIPING WOMEN on this website, it was the best idea I had, to become an MT. And if medical transcriptionists don't let the greedy companies ruin our profession, it will always be around in some capacity.

I don't do VR editing or clean up after Indians. That's my line in the dirt. I'll do something else, first. If only everyone else would follow. (And the excuses poor in.) Also, the transition to coding or medical billing would be EXTREMELY easy especially after some years of experience and growing your medical knowledge and vocabulary. Of course, there is that stumbling block of work experience. BUT the AAPC will certify you and that will get you hired as a coder, minus the experience in most instances. The test is grueling.

But on the upside of that, they get to take books in with them that have A&P in them and definitions and notes in the margins unlike MTs sitting for certification via (Grrrr) AAMT or AHDI or MTIA or whatever it is they are calling themselves THIS week, who can take in nothing, not even a foot pedal. What? No foot pedal you say? Yes, that stoppped me again after 15 years, I go back and forth on the CMT issue. No foot pedal allowed in the testing in Tulsa, OK. Idjits. So not in the know. The people proctoring. But hey, its a money thing anyway. :D

I had a coder tell me not too long ago that coders make more money than MTs. Of course volumes fluctuate, especially if you work for individuals and shy away from larger conglomerates (my recommendation, worked at MQ when it was Medifax and Secrephone and was quitting as it morphed into MQ). That was 96. I just did a productivity check - watched my time, stayed on task (can be difficult sometimes), and hit a production best of 276 lines in an hour using only autocorrect short cuts and some templates I made myself in Word not real macros. AND I can't get my "go to" short cut to work and have forgotten how I made it. My productivity at 10 cpl was was 28 dollars for that hour. At 8 cpl it would have been 22 and at 7 cpl it would have been 19.32. I don't think coders make that.

I was reading over your reply and I do VR and one - thing that immediately stood

out from the page was the excuses poor in. I think that word would be pour. This is what VR does. I see words everywhere that are misspelled. One more thing about VR is not half the trouble of regular transcription and you can make up in the 20 dollar range if you have a good platform.
you're right - pour me :) - imanmt2

What is a good platform? What is a good line rate? And what about all the MTs who complain they have to retype the documents at the VR editing rate? I've typed doctors before that no way could VR do them. Can VR understand the really, really bad ESL docs?

There was an ad that had VR at 5 cents a line and typing at 10 and then they divided it out 90% VR and 10% straight typing. I saw where someone had posted a question about that asking if that was good pay.

And the software counts your lines for you, too? Have you ever compared the line counting tool to say Abacus which gives a tremendous line count (with everything turned on, that is)?

One last question. A day's work is defined by... lines produced or edited? And how many lines is a full day's work compared to say 1000 lines of straight transcription?
I can answer some of your questions about VR - but not all and just because not remembering
[ In Reply To ..]
I think Escription has a great platform, probably the best. I think the MTs who complain are not using the best that they could. Escription is unbelievable when it comes to anyone, even the worst of ESLs. I was like you, thought the same BEFORE I started using, thinking it would never understand and now it really frees me up from replaying the work again and again. You think you have typed ones that VR cannot get, not so. Yes, the line count is done and I have not compared to anything else. Before VR I straight typed around 2000 or more a day, with VR can get around 3800-4000 lines a day. Mine is straight and VR combined. I work 8 hours a day, 4 days a week and make over $500.00 for that work. I make 4 cents VR, 8 straight.

I don't use Escription - I understand that it is very good - be aware that as a transcriptionist or an editor, you will use the software that the company uses - in the above post, it is inferred that a transcriptionist has a choice and should choose Escription - it is not your choice - you may be stuck with a poor program - I recently switched accounts with a 20% pay cut, but I was able to easily make up the lines because the platform was faster and more user friendly for me (this account was straight transcription, not VR).

MT question - Newmt

[ In Reply To ..]
Well first, your spelling and grammar need to be exceptional - forget it if you think "I want to study for Medical Transcription" is proper English.

Are you sure? - MT student

[ In Reply To ..]
Medical transcription courses are not as easy as one would like to think. You need excellent grammar, spelling, medical knowledge, and punctuation skills. It's a lot more than just working at home and typing. Not to sound rude but you couldn't even use the correct grammar or punctuation in this question so I'm not sure if this would be something you should get in to. Yes you can study online, but where I go you must pass everything with at least an 86%, and in order for the school to help you get a job you should finish with an overall percent of 93 or higher. A lot of people have to search high and low for jobs when they finish and send out numerous resumes.

First you need to learn the basics of correct English grammar. This will be a requirement of any legitimate MT school BEFORE you enroll.

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

Medical Transcription Has Come A Long Way

If there was no work, we could go the observation area in the OR and watch procedures or view tapes of procedures to familiar ...
