medical abstractor - ncmt

Posted: Apr 21, 2014

wondering if anyone out there does medical abstractor work and would share information on  this type of work, i.e., special training to get started, is it worth the switch, or anything that could be helpful.  Have been MT work for decades, really tired of making little money for long hours of work.   TIA

Abstracting involves looking through medical records to find specific bits of information for quality assurance or research projects. For instance, demographics, diagnoses, results of tests, presence of adequate documentation of something or other, etc.

You would have to understand the medical record, so healthcare professionals are usually employed. There is no formal training for it.

Ew - it sounds almost as boring as coding. - Will take a pass on that!

.....

Umm make that sounds almost as boring - as you imagine coding is

I made the stupid mistake of listening to my fellow MTs who said the same thing. Because of that, I wasted almost 10 years trying to survive in MT.

Going by what I earned in my first years of coding, that stupid mistake cost me between 20 and 50K a year.

Crow about your income while you still can..... - NM

It is income I LOST, so no crowing here - sm

How is stating a fact "crowing"? I lost that income already. I've also earned enough to pay for my educational expenses hundreds of times over.

Apparently, you are still losing it. Your beef should be with yourself, not with me.

I looked into that once - they all wanted coders

After talking to a friend who does that and makes good money at it, I checked Indeed.com for awhile but everyone wanted coders for that job.

thanks for info - ncmt

don't want to get struck down by posting something wrong here, but on another website there was a listing directed to MTs so was thinking about checking it out. It's not bad hourly pay, more than less than minimum wage which is about all we get with VR, SR, AST, so on and forth

I abstract on a daily basis as part of my job. I do have coding background but it is not necessary to know coding. When MT was eliminated at the facility where I work, several MTs were moved into abstracting. We were converting from one EMR to another and a lot of information needed transferring. It can get boring and I am glad to have other projects to work on. However, it does pay hourly and it is not production based. You can be trained without knowing how to code. I have to research things and actually use my coding book sometimes. Don't let the opinions of other stop you from trying this if you want to do it and you need the income, only then will you know if it is something you like to do.
where can we find these jobs? - desperate

does anyone have any leads to find a job like this? I have searched online, but like others have said they all want coding backgrounds. I have been a transcriptionist/tech for 10+ years and would love to learn something new. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

I Just Saw An Ad For A Medical Scribe
Jun 25, 2010

I just saw an ad for a Medical Scribe.  The description is that the MT accompanies the doc from room to room to see patients, sits at the computer in the room and transcribes the H&P/procedure while doc is doing the exam.  Starting pay was $17/hr with full benefits.  Anybody ever heard of this?  I think it's a good idea, leaves the doc hands free to tend to the patient.  It sounds a little like being a court reporter as far as "live" dictation being done. ...
