holiday pto hours? - mimtt

Posted: Dec 31, 2013

I'm curious how other companies handle low work days. At the company I work for, if we have a slow day (holidays are always slow and have little to no work coming in) we are required to use PTO hours if we have them available. If we don't have PTO hours, we take the hours unpaid.  I had 12 hours of PTO.  We had no work Christmas day, and I had to use 8 hours.  I was told a few days ago that on New Years my account will have no work and I will have to use my remaining 4 hours toward that since it's a scheduled work day. Both of these days, I'm still scheduled to work and still have to check in every hour or so for work just in case some random job does come in.

The way I'm seeing it, there are 7 paid holidays a year. Every holiday is slow, because the clinics I work for are closed those days.  So basically my 1 week of PTO every year has to go toward those holidays, not toward an actual vacation or day off.

Does that seem fair?

Nope, but it will continue if we all let it. nm - broke

The reason the MT profession is in the state it is, so unfair, is MTs have allowed it and taken their abusive treatment. PTO is not used for no work available. Like the post said, if you have no work and have to take PTO, then you have the day off, end of story. Make 2014 a new start and we need to stop putting up with this garbage. How dare they treat us they way they do. I got out because of this horrible treatment and NEVER looked back.

field employed by professional males.

And yet I _still_ see people here justifying making $7 an hour! Boggles the mind.

If I could make one New Years wish for the MTs of the USA, it would be this: That they see their worth as hard-working human beings and as women of value and walk away from the exploitation.

If I were told to take PTO, then I most certainly would NOT check in periodically to see if there was any work. If I was told to take 8 hours or whatever hours were left of my accrued PTO, then dang it, I'm off for the day. End of story. A day off is a day off. If the company wants to pay you to be on call, then they can pay you per hour to do so. Otherwise, I wouldn't babysit a computer.

Why does the company insist you take your PTO on a scheduled work day? I would tell them that you were working, do the best you can with digging up work, and save your PTO for the days you want off.

I know, these companies all twist the rules in their favor.

Here's hoping the holidays don't all land on your regular scheduled days to work in 2014.

so that is the way things are headed I guess. NO PTO and NO holiday pay. Sucks.

No PTO - MT

I don't get PTO or vacation or holiday pay or incentive pay or differential, BUT, I knew that going in. In the past I worked for companies that did give those perks and we were well compensated. No longer! I decided, I couldn't take working for the bigger MTSO, i.e., M*Modal, Nuance, Keystrokes, etc. Even if they offer you benefits, it is a wolf in sheep's clothing. You hardly make enough money to even take time off, your PTO pay is a pittance, the working conditions are horrible and so on. Everything is a trade off, BUT, if I did work for a company that gave me PTO and expected me to take it when no work was available, I would not do that. When I didn't have any work, I just left my computer on and did what I wanted and checked back throughout my shift. Actually I could have cared less what they did to me, as I was looking to get out and I did.

My company requires a 2 week notice to use PTO so we can't use it when there is no work. We get time and 1/2 for Thanksgiving and Christmas only. The other holidays are just like any other day of the week.

Then why are you there? no message - kshel

I wouldn't mind them not paying for holidays - OR even taking our PTO

[ In Reply To ..]
when there is no work --IF they would just allow us to take time off without pay. But to make us spend PTO on holidays when there is no work -- especially when there is so little PTO to begin with, and then say, "Sorry, cannot approve time off because you don't have sufficient PTO, and unpaid time off is a 'perk' this company does not offer," will eventually be a deal-breaker for me (i.e., the next time I need some time off). With what these companies pay now, I would think (and I wish they would realize) that more and more often our jobs are to supplement other income in the household (I truly feel for all who are trying to make it on this income alone). In other words, they are eventually going to lose many of their seasoned veterans who have the option of doing other things with their time than just editing.

Is it fair? - NO

But, is ANYTHING in the "MT World" fair anymore? Should you be obligated to use your PERSONAL days at the choosing of your company? That is ridiculous! MTSOs for some reason think they operate on a totally different set of rules than anyone else and the MTs sit here and let them do that. I get the fact that what do you do, quit? Someone will step up and accept it and we all know this and the MTSOs all know this, so I guess it's just swallow what they serve and put up with it until people finally decide to get out and leave the MTSO high and dry.

This is just nuts. There is no other industry where this would be acceptable - Meek n Mild

except maybe migrant farm worker. Even the cashiers at 7-11 and Burger King don't put up with this. I think MTs have been beaten down for so long they don't even know what's up anymore. Please get out of this death spiral. There's no shortage of jobs out here in the west. U-Haul, one way.

The MTSOs ALWAYS think rules don't apply - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It frustrates me to no end! I have an MT job that constantly runs out of work. I make $500 twice per month on this job. I beg and beg and BEG for more lines and am always told "It will pick up" yet it never does. My company expects you to basically be available to do the work the minute it comes in, no matter when it comes in and they have sent out emails saying they will not tolerate their MTs having second jobs, that they only want "fulltime" MTs and if they find out we have a second job we will be fired and our work given to someone who will "appreciate" it. So, I actually do have a second MT job that I had to get because $250 per week just doesn't cut it for me. I have to fear them finding out and firing me. I mean what company can threaten to fire you if you have a second job and don't dedicate 24 hours per day to their company for a mere $250 weekly? Why do we let these companies treat us this way?

The real world - Anon2

Until you know how other health care facilities handle low work situations you need to stop making assumptions that this is an MTSO thing. At my on site job, in the rare instance where we had NJA or technical issues and couldn't work, the MTs had the option of using PTO or flexing. If a person wants to get paid, that is what they do. At my current job, all of our PTO, holidays included, are lumped into one account. Technically, there are 7 paid holidays but it is all considered PTO. Good question: Why DO you let these companies treat you this way?

Holiday Pay...sm

Here's the deal...my company says if/when you work a holiday, they will give you the equivalent hours in PTO to use later on (you work 8, you get 8 PTO).  I checked with my state's DOL, and they said absolutely incorrect. You must be an exempt salaried employee for them to do this. They must pay regular employees cash money. The DOL also said that unless the company is a licensed health care facility in my state, which they are not--they only contract with ...

If You Don't Have PTO?  Does That Mean You Have To Work The Holiday?
