gross versus custom lines - ctype1

Gross versus custom lines... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
A gross line is counted as anything on that line as a line, be it one word or a full line.

A custom line is what constitutes a line, be it 65 characters per line, 60 characters per line, etc.

Gross lines usually pay more. My contract is 60 characters equals 1 line, including spaces.

Was your question?

That was the first slash in wages thanks to AAMT - Angie

AAMT, which I considered just a front for an organization that CLAIMED to be FOR the MT, slashed our income 30% when they decided that we would all conform to their standard of the 65-character line. Newbies didn't know the difference between a gross and character line so they just followed their "orders" from AAMT, essentially undercutting those of us who had been making a living doing MT by gross line count.

Then comes the MTSOs, slashing the MT's salaries in half, but fortuntely back then only newbies had to start with an MTSO to build experience. It wasn't until the idiots who created VR, that will never work for MT without editing by a human, that we had another slash in income by 50%.

For those of us who are single, living on less than half the income we did 30 years ago, and having to pay twice as much as married couples who can split expenses in half, it's hard to even pay for medications or groceries, let alone see a doctor or keep your house.

I'd just like that move by AAMT to the character line to be remembered as one of the first attacks on MTs, followed by their sending the AAMT personnel to travel to India to train them in MT with the money they made off of our with our dues of over $100.00!

The T stood for transcription not ist.. they also - IMANMT2

certified the Indians cheaper than American MTs. Probably still do as AHDI.

They were definitely dealing from the bottom of the deck.

Wish states would take over the certification/licensing process and cut them and their "proctors" completely out.

Can You Recommend An Accurate Line Counting Program For Gross Lines?
Mar 10, 2010

I have been using MPCount for several years but recently upgraded to a new laptop & it will not work on it - incompatible. I tried out their new trial version of MPTools but it does not count my gross lines the same & I would be losing more $ than I would like with it. There is something programmed into the newer version that counts differently somehow. (That was even confirmed with the person who produced this program.) Are there any other line counting software programs out t ...

Gross Line Versus 65 Character Line
Aug 19, 2010

Anyone know if 5 cents per gross line is good or not? Better than 10 cents a 65 character line??   A company is offering this to me & says that at least 1/2 of every report is templated but you still get paid for it.  I make 10 cents a 65 character line with the company I work for at this time.  Please advise so I can make a decision to test or not with them.  ...

Can someone tell me the difference between median and average lines per hour?  My median is 283.3, but my average is 247.9 (this is just for today's date).  I have been working for 6 hours and my lines are 1320.  Does not compute... lol Thanks. ...

99.7% Versus Number Of Lines Audited
May 07, 2014

Anybody know if there is a "standard" for number of lines to be audited on?  All of my audits have been for under 200 lines.  I never pass.  It seems to me that if you sample such a small number, you are more likely to have errors and thus fail an audit.  Are each of us being held to different standards as far as lines audited?  Are some people audited on 500 or 600 lines and others to a smaller number?  If we have to be held to 99.7%, shouldn't there be a cons ...

Minimum Wage Versus Lines Per Hour.
Jan 02, 2013

So I have been very careful not clocking in when work is low because I don't want my LPH to suffer, BUT.....Is there anyone out there who just clocks in and takes the reports slow as they come and accepts the minimum wage?  Do you get "naughty" emails from your lead telling you that you need to pick it up or clock out?  I hope this makes sense.  It just occurec to me that minimum wage would be better than no wage when work is low. ...

Calculating Lines Per Hour Versus Time Worked
May 14, 2010

Hi everyone:) Just wanted to know how to calculate a line rate based on the number of hours worked, which is for Transcend.  Got a "not so nice" message from my TL saying I had better adjust my lines AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to make it balance out with the # of lines I am producing, or else!!  I would like to know if 1 of you kind, wonderful MTs would help me.  Thanks!! ...

How Can Gross Lph Be More Than Net Lph?
Feb 17, 2011

Got my ASR production report. My net lph is 100 lines greater than my gross lph. The definition of gross is the the total before any deductions. The definition of net is gross minus deductions. Good grief. This is my report from last week. Last week I really put my nose to the grind stone and gave it full effort in the hopes that it would be reflected in my count. Nada, nothing. My count was exactly the same as when I don't have my nose to the grind stone. They want your hand o ...

4.5 Cpl For A Gross Line?
Aug 19, 2012

Considering taking a new job but wondering if I'd be getting screwed.  Owner is offering 4.5 cpl for a gross line, and they use the line count function in Word to count their lines.  On the sample test document they have their margins stretched about as far as they can go.  I make 8 cpl right now on a 65 character line, typing in Word, and by the formula I'm paid by now it looks like 4.5 cpl would be almost half of what I'm making now for the same document.  Ow ...

Gross, Disgusting And Abusive
Jun 16, 2011

Just typed a report that I can honestly say is probably the most disgusting dictation I have ever done in 30 years.  Dictator (ha ha - joke!) was chomping very loudly on chips, rustling bag and sucking and sloberring.  If I were talking to a person doing that I would walk away so fast she would choke on her own slobber.   Listening to it is abuse in my opinion. ...

Is It True That FOCUS, Only Counts Half Of Your Lines When Calculating VR Lines?

Told Nuance Was Overcharging For Lines, Now Lines Drastically Reduced
May 02, 2012

My main account was a good one, and the lines were very good, mostly ER work. I have been on this account for over a year and a half now. We recently received an e-mail stating that Nuance had discovered that the line count was charging incorrectly, as instituted by them, and they had been crediting us with MORE lines than we were actually doing and overcharging the client. Now get this, they informed us that they would not make US pay it back, for their mistake, but that our new lines would re ...

TransTech Lines - Required Hours But Are Short Lines?
Jun 10, 2011

What do you do when you have the required hours but are short lines? I got an email that I need to "make plans to have my shortage made up." End Point Versus Endpoint And Hand Grip Versus Handgrip
Mar 13, 2012

Two words that come up often for questioning.  These are strictly used in an orthopedic setting.  Stedman's and Dorland's list end point and hand grip HOWEVER the office transcription manager,  girl is asking for me to correct this to endpoint and handgrip. She is only basing this on what an old medical transcription company she used to work for had her typing. I would rather base it on the  medical reference. The doctors are not even aware this has come up. She is ...
