fingerprinting to apply for a job? Seriously? - tryingtostayawake
Posted: May 02, 2011
Never heard of such a thing! If this company does any outsourcing I hope the outsourced transcriptions also have to undergo this. This is totally absurd!
Government contracts need them! - ooo

If you want a job with a contractor for Military or VA hospitals you need them for a security clearance. If it's too much bother may be you should look elsewhere. It's part of the hiring process, I'm not being difficult just stating a fact. In this post 911 world which we are all reminded of today it's a good thing...
yep. I would like to add that applies to ANY government contract work . - not just medical transcription. NM

Unless you have something to hide - I've worked for K&R and got my security clearance, fingerprinting, etc and it was no major event. As another post stated, you have to have it to work for government facilities....The only reason I left K&R is because of the VBC line count - but they were good to work with and never bothered you. I just needed to have a better line count methodology.

If you can't understand the MAGNITUDE of this encroachment upon our civil liberties by BIG BROTHER, then my advice to you is to get your head outta the sand and put down the pitcher of Kool-Aid.

Meaning encroachment of civil liberties by GOV... think about it. Can you go ANYwhere u are not tracked by camera or a paper trail?
This doesn't bother the "got nothin' to hide' crowd UNTIL or UNLESS they ever want to stand up to their government for something. Then they'll realize just how CONTROLLED we 'free' people are.

I neither stated nor implied that the ship just now left the harbor; I was pointing out to the poster that the fingerprinting is yet ONE MORE encroachment.
Have a good one, fellow red-pill taker. ;)

How people KNOW the media is not their friend, but still suck up whatever it dictates?

Right on, sister! Our state-run propaganda machine is just as bad as China's or Russia's, it just operates a little differently. Most media outlets have been owned by the TPTB since WWI, when independent newspapers were snatched up in a buying frenzy.
You and I should have coffee sometime!!!

Relax, in this isolated instance, this is not an encroachment upon our civil liberties. The reason that fingerprinting (as a part of a security clearance) is required for working at the VA is because of national security issues. Some of the patients seen at the VA have recently been at war, and possibly have been involved in highly secret clandestine operations. In the process of history taking, etc., it may come out where the patient was, what he was doing, and other information that might be provide useful intel to the enemy. This security clearance is done to ensure that enemy intelligence gatherers are not employed as MTs by the VA.

I had to get fingerprinted and had a background check ran on me. It didn't bother me in the least, it just let me know that the place I worked for was serious about who they hired. I'd do it again as I have nothing to hide and if it is for a good job, then why not?

You made a blanket statement that fingerprinting was absurd. The posters were explaining why it's not absurd.
I really do not see any responses as rude, not like some other topics here. - but I am not you, and that is just my opinoin.

Rather than take the harsher comments personally, why not just disregard them? It's good to have thicker skin when posting on ANY 'anonymous' site - as people feel more free to be blunt.
outsource versus offshore - mt

If a hospital/clinic hires a MTSO, they are outsourcing. If they are hiring those across the ocean, they are offshoring. Very different entities.
I agree with the other posters, if fingerprinting is a problem for you, then you should probably look elsewhere.

One company is currently requiring a background check including credit check and a UA they pay to have done locally. Personally I think this is a good idea. If the company is doing government work such as for the VA you have to pass a 7-year background check. I wish they did this for everyone. I would like to know the person touching my records has a clean background. Hey, a girl can dream!
when you work with children you need to be fingerprinted also - mb

I have friends that are teachers and they had to get fingerprinted. So it is not just goverment jobs.
Yep, I work at the county public school PT and - sm -

I was fingerprinted, had to pass a criminal background check, and drug/alcohol testing for a very PT job, make anywhere from $100-$600 a month there as it is per diem work, but no matter how piddly a position they (the county here) check you out thoroughly.
Must not be this way in all counties. Haven't - you seen news stories SM

when someone who worked at a school or around children was accused/convicted of child-related crimes and all the commentators are asking "How could this have happened? Why didn't this person have a background check?", etc. Next comes all the excuses from the school district or whoever. Same with probation departments. Happens over and over. What they are supposed to do and what they really do are two different things.
being fingerprinted for MT job - nina

I worked for a Children's Hospital in my area and I had to be fingerprinted, a background check and drug test. It's a normal thing. To the original poster, we're not being mean, we're just letting you know that it's not absurd, it's normal. A lot of us have been in this field a long time, so you should take our posts as helpful information since you are so new.

Pretty much standard practice at all hospitals now. If they are outsourcing and they require their own employees to be fingerprinted then it only goes to say that they would want outside people with access to their records to pass the same. I have been fingerprinted for several different hospitals as well as L.A. County. Many are using "LiveScan" now which is computerized and your prints are in their computer but everytime you get a new employer you have to do them over again in LiveScan.
It may sound far fetched to you but a hospital I was working at made it a requirement for all of their employees and they had several they had to fire for criminal records that would preclude them from working around patients and or patient records. No one wants to give access to their patient's information to someone with a criminal record that has anything to do with forgery/identity theft, etc. So if you think about it....it makes sense.
I applied to RI Unlimited 3 months ago and never heard back--should I reapply? I got emails saying that I passed everything and then they said I would hear back but never did. What is your advice? Thanks. ...

I just got an e-mail from a recruiter from Nuance asking me if I would like to apply for a job; i.e. they took over my former place of employment's transcription department and I had originally applied so I could stay on, but then decided not to-thus they still had my contact info. The recruiter said that they had merged with Transcend and that there was plenty of work, etc. I do need a job as my unemployment benefits will be running out by the beginning of the new year, or sooner if phas ...

Beginning of December 2009

beginning of January 2010 ?

Is their transcription test timed?

Just want to be sure my fellow MTs are well informed. If you apply at Teletrak, be prepared to be offered 8 cpl for 65 VBC line - this amounts to approximately 30% reduction in pay with the negative spaces. I used several old reports and figured line counts all ways and it was almost 30% less each time with VBC. I was told by the recruiter, "You'll probably have to work a few extra hours a day to make what you're used to, but in order to keep the client in a long-term ...
I would totally be leery of this job. They are liars and cheats and are always wanting you to work your days off and over, but pay you NO OVERTIME!! THIS COMPANY SUCKS AND DOES NOT GIVE A RATS BEHIND ABOUT THEIR EMPLOYEES. I have worked there 4 years and never got a raise, much less any respect for the 21 years I have worked as an MT. They have no respect for their employees. I WOULD NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY. THE REVIEWS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES......... ...
besides the resume do you add--how much selling of your skill, etc? Some companies won't open an attachment, so I get the feeling they don't want much more. My feeling is if they see the resume and want more info they will contact me, but never sure.
Thanks for any insight.

I sent an email to the recruiter for Keystrokes asking that very question, but never got a response.
I don't think its crazy to want to know about their benefits, or the pay, before you even bother to go through the whole process of applying and testing. Am I wrong?

I went to their website where I tried to follow directions. They make it impossible. They ("Now Transcription") want you to fill out an application through "Accord Human Resources", then save it and email it to them along with your resume. But the application will not allow anyone to save it, or submit it anywhere as is. You basically waste your time filling it out just to find out nothing you filled out will be saved. And there's a huge glitch with the em ...
