I'm sort of new to this "work pool" thing where the work is shared amoung several MTs. I understand that we all need to make a buck.... as much bucks as possible, actually. I also understand that sometimes the work load is slim-pickin's. When that's the case, and I know that there's a lull, I do try to be considerate and not take ALL the work that's in there. For instance, if I see there are only say 10 or 15 jobs in a queue and there is another MT working on them, I'll usually let them take it. On the other hand, I get really annoyed when I'm working and there are say 8 jobs in there and 3 MT jump in and grab them.

Is this being cut-throat, or is it survival? I hate the feeling of being in competition with fellow MTs who I know are also strugging to make ends meet. I've been doing this for nearly 20 years, but like I siad, this is my first experience wtih work pools. Just wondering if this how it is and I need to stop worrying about being considerate ..

You are most certainly NOT a sucker, and if I were still an MTSO, I would hire you in a hot New York minute. You sound like a kind and considerate person. Although I retired two years ago, I still do some fill-in for a friend who is an MTSO, in order for us to be able to travel. However, if I can see the work is getting low, I log off. I use the money I earn MTing mostly for travel and things around the house; I am very conscious that some other MT might need the work to feed her family (I've been there, believe me), so just log off and let her or him have what is left. To me, that is only right.

I have never worked in this situation, but it certainly sounds as though you are being considerate at the expense of not making a paycheck. I think I would at least take some of the available jobs. Everyone's just trying to survive and you should worry about yourself. It's just the way your company has set up the work situation.

I have worked both with pooled work and with assigned work. I would much rather have a "dedicated" doctor(s) or assigned work to type over working from a pool any day. I can log in and see 100 jobs in the pool, decide to go ahead and do some laundry and housework for a couple of hours thinking that I can come back and type the rest of the day only to find 8 jobs left in the pool out of that 100 jobs. Companies who have pooled work tend to put too many MTs into one pool, so it is basically grab it while it is there or take a chance of losing out. Most pools I have ever worked from allow you to download 3 jobs at a time, so there is no "hogging" the work from one MT.

I am I the same situation with FIFO and at first it was horrible and I would be at my computer all day it seemed, checking in and out. Then the company I work for got a couple new accounts and that helped a bit. I also set a limit for myself and try to do that and if there is no work, then I just have to let it go. I tried a second job, but that turned out to be counter productive and I was a slave to two companies and not making any money. I would advise, work if there is work and try to set some sort of schedule for yourself. If I go on in the morning and there isn't anything, then I wait until mid afternoon and perhaps evening; if no work, then no work. You either have to deal with this type of situation or find another company to work for, but as you have read on this board, how many MTs have no work and they work for the "big boys." This job is not what it used to be and the luxury of steady work is long gone.

If you can afford to be so considerate, then I say good for you. You are earning some good karma.

However, I don't think you should feel guilty IF you are scheduled to be working at that time and you work. In fact, you are just doing what you contracted to do - work such-and-so hours/schedule. It is not your fault if the company has overstaffed itself or loses accounts, etc.

Another thing to consider -- and I know some here will disagree with me/dislike my point of view -- If those other MTs are snatching up those jobs outside their scheduled hours, they are stealing work from you and everyone else who is scheduled. You have no way (I assume) of knowing who is working or whether they are working in or outside of their hours. All you can control is yourself. Assuming you have a set schedule to work - just do that. You are not responsible for anyone else or how they work their schedule or whether or not they have work. You are not taking work away from them if you are working your scheduled shift/hours.

Take 4 of the 10 or 15 and leave the rest. Come back and take another 4. Just set yourself a guideline and stick to it.

This is something that has been bothering me. I feel stupid asking, but since it's rather important, I ask. cpl Currently, I am making 0.083 per line typed. I see people stating things like 7 cpl or .8 cpl. Does that equate to 7.0 per lined type (seems crazy!) and 0.8 per line typed? I'm currently being offered incentive pay for working on my days off. Is transcribing Acute Care notes that much different than clinical notes? I currently transcribe for a family practice and gastro docs who do colonoscopies and minor procedures and have typed for oncologists and cardiologists, gyns, ophthalmologists. Can it really be that much different? I'm asking because I think I could do it. My inactive time is HUGE. I just came over from another company that was pretty bad about training. I learned DQS on my own without any help whatsoever. stating too many reports being sent in with blanks. Need to send these to QA/MME/whatever they're called now. Why would we do this and get paid even less for the most horrible dictators, the worst sound quality, nothing in repository to help, being in the cesspool, yadda, yadda, yadda. As per usual during an incentive (I work FT and work Saturday), half way thru my shift I get NJA. *** On these stupid incentives, I just pray that I can even get my hours in much less any freaking OT. I finally had got enough 100% post-audits to overcome the critical error that I had the first week of October to bring myself up over 99% and they found 2 critical errors in 1 report that brought me back down to 98%.
