Is transcribing Acute Care notes that much different than clinical notes? I currently transcribe for a family practice and gastro docs who do colonoscopies and minor procedures and have typed for oncologists and cardiologists, gyns, ophthalmologists. Can it really be that much different? I'm asking because I think I could do it. I am a fairly quick learner and have a good grasp of terminology and worked in a rehab hospital and was exposed to a lot of H&P, discharge summaries, etc.

Anyone can type clinical notes and minor procedures, in my opinion. To work in a hospital setting, you need to know operative reports in addition to the other milieu - the instruments, the drugs, how to spell them, especially problematic can be the "sound-alike" drugs that are used for totally different reasons....the spelling of the procedures....it is a whole new ball game. It's a great game, but you can't just jump in and do it - you need some kind of a mentor. Good luck.

I got a phone call, "operative reports are really backed up. I'll fax you some samples." Now they're my absolute favorite.

I have been an MT for 30 years plus and I had no "formal" training. I learned in a med rec department of a local hospital, doing it all. I have also worked in multiple specialty offices. Yes clinical work is a lot difference, but it can be learned as long as you realize things are going to be different. Give it a try, hopefully, someone is willing to give you a chance. Your starting in a better position than I did, all I had was a biology background and no medical experience at all. The same thing holds true for my daughter who only had manufacturing experience and she has been an administrative assistant at our local teaching hospital for over 7 years now and even did a little transcription before then went to electronic medical records. look up other reports from each dictator. Not nearly as big a deal as it would have been the old days. Initially, if possible limit yourself to one account so you can get used to it fastest.

You've had oodles of exposure with all sorts of things it sounds like. I have a feeling you will pick up Op notes in a jiff...and like many of us, may even get to LOVE them!

Samples definitely help, but thankfully with the internet and all its vast resources, researching things are a lot easier today.

Go for it. I do not know of ANY MTs who "studied" acute care extensively before they entered it. I jumped in a position that was only op notes, a 5-year experience requirement with technically difficult op notes (transplants). I had zero experience, only worked with clinic notes, but she gave me a chance. It went GREAT. I agree that it is much different, but much more fun and interesting. Plus...in this business it is definitely job security.

I've trained a lot of MTs. I always say if you have a reasonably intelligent human, with a good grasp of the English language and the ability to open a book (we still mostly used books in "those" days -10 years ago!), then you can teach that MT do learn a new vocabulary list.

Operative reports, once you get thru them, are often quite repetitive, so learning that vocab list is not as lofty as some might try to portray.

A *GOOD* MT can learn formatting and ANY specialty and do it well.

One of the big differences might be extensive laboratory data. Other than that? Nah, just brush up on those vocab lists and go for it!!

This is something that has been bothering me. I feel stupid asking, but since it's rather important, I ask. cpl Currently, I am making 0.083 per line typed. I see people stating things like 7 cpl or .8 cpl. Does that equate to 7.0 per lined type (seems crazy!) and 0.8 per line typed? I'm currently being offered incentive pay for working on my days off. My inactive time is HUGE. I just came over from another company that was pretty bad about training. I learned DQS on my own without any help whatsoever. stating too many reports being sent in with blanks. Need to send these to QA/MME/whatever they're called now. Why would we do this and get paid even less for the most horrible dictators, the worst sound quality, nothing in repository to help, being in the cesspool, yadda, yadda, yadda. I finally had got enough 100% post-audits to overcome the critical error that I had the first week of October to bring myself up over 99% and they found 2 critical errors in 1 report that brought me back down to 98%.
