Could someone explain the reason we went from working as ICs with our own accounts to MTSOs who pay half that? Was it the cost of EMR software? If this is the case, why do we depend on MTSO's for work when we can download freeware that enables transfer of sound files and Internet transfer of files back to the doctor? Where did we go wrong?

[ In Reply To ..]You went wrong in assuming the majority of MTs worked as true independent contractors. MTSOs provide manpower in numbers you couldn't as an IC. If the hospital was left to hire 120 ICs, it would be maddening for them. The reality is MTSOs have been around for nearly 50 years, so I'm kind of thinking they came before too many ICs did.

Biggest of all, I'd guess, though has simply been that we've been living in the era of the middle man, when companies and governments everywhere outsourced practically everything they could. We even outsourced war, for heavens' sakes. It was the wave.
Maybe the wheel will turn again with the EHR, SR, data mining, etc., but fewer human clerical hours actually required per record...?

The middle man is the foundation of America. I'm terrified to imagine a gov't which would destroy it's backbone intentionally.

I personally know someone who works as a middle manager for Nuance, makes well over 50,000 and has had constant raises since being hired. From what she tells me she is very effective, but even the other middle managers who are not at all effective with huge make up costs and teams who fail audits constantly do not get terminated.
