A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
Hi everyone, I haven't posted here for years. I'm facing transition: my per diem employer has transitioned to the Cerner EMR and for now, there's no work for me. My primary employer is planning a move to an EMR late this year and my department head doesn't know what the implications will be for us. The latter is a psych facility.
I'd worked for Spheris for a year from home and MedQuist for about three years. Before that, lots of in-house experience, which I loved, except for the gossipy "office mouths".
I have approximately 20 years' experience in acute care transcription, a lot of experience with ESL dictators, and have always loved transcribing operative notes. I need to keep learning and remain challenged. My present job has been a blessing in terms of stability while undergoing some serious life changes. However, it's far removed from the "real medical world" and we have no QA here! I've never experienced anything like it before. Working at our local hospital per diem has been a wonderful, validating breath of fresh air.
I applied to Nuance recently and prepared for my interview. This turned out to be very brief. Silly me, I was honest! When the breezy young recruiter asked what percentage of the basic four I'd been doing, I told her I'd been transcribing psych reports and then working on overflow OPD clinic notes on the side. Therefore my acute care experience was considered outdated. Conversation over.
M-Modal had soliticted me here at work, much to my surprise. After some research, I realized they were the "new and improved version" of MedQuist. I e-mailed them to ask how they'd found me and what the heck was going on. A real person called back and suggested I talk with them if I was interested about joining up again.
Anyhow, I am facing changes ahead and vowed I wouldn't sit here helplessly, waiting for the axe to fall. I now have high-speed cable and a home to work from, lots of skill, a questioning mind and the need to go forward. And I miss those op notes! Does anyone have some recommendations for me?
Thanks so much for listening.
