This Article, Especially The Third Point, Really Pissed Me Off - smeeps

This is only a snippet, but once you read it, you'll be just as ticked-off as I am:

According to Katie Bardaro, lead analyst at PayScale.com, three types of workers are best-suited to work from home:

"The ability to work from home is a privilege, not a right," Bardaro says. "The best way to prepare yourself for it is to make yourself a star performer in your current role in the office and show the powers that be that you have the ability to succeed in your role with limited supervision."

Nice to know where we fit - less skilled, lower paid

[ In Reply To ..]
At least this Katie got the second part right. Definitely lower paid, but hopefully that will change. As for lower skilled, I wonder if this Katie person could ever do a surgical report, or transcribe an ESL with limited English? Somehow I doubt it. Very offensive, indeed.

Oh no, no skilled required to do this. Whatever.

Makes me nervous for my healthcare - nervous

I mean, if this takes no skill, then what is being put in my chart? I've done reports where the doctor is reading what was put in the chart and actually said out loud, "I wouldn't have given that much, that would kill him." Scary.

The analyst who did the research is on FB....sm - smeeps

Maybe I should send her an mp3 recording that I have with dictation and let her give it a shot.

No doubt we are more skilled than she is. I also am not a transcriber but a transcriptionist. A transcriber is a machine that is used to transcribe or play audio. Medical transcription used to be a professional field but no doubt tarnished with all the advertisements from "matchbook" schools that we could be trained in a few months and work in our pajamas.

Several of my friends found this last week and we tried to join a discussion but couldn't, (on the Monster job site), so we just kept giving the article 1 star!! Would have liked to give it 0 stars!!

I think maybe she jumped to the assumption we are unskilled by looking at our pay, which could certainly lead you to that assumption!!

I just got - on here

I clicked on "PayScale" link and at the bottom of their web page is "contact us" so I did. I sent an email regarding Katie's stupid ass low pay, low skilled remark. Everyone should flood them with emails.

I did and will do as you did as well. Ticked off! - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
I will definitely input my pay scale, which is probably a lot more than Katie makes.... Medical transcription is not always as easy as it sounds, we correct a lot of mistakes dictated not to mention figuring out what ESL or mumblers are trying to dictate, especially on cell phones, etc.

Here's what I sent PayScale.com - Sick and Tired

A medical transcriptionist is a medical language specialist who transcribes, utilizes text editing technology, and interprets dictation by physicians and other healthcare providers in order to document patient care. The position is also routinely involved in research of questions and in the education of others involved with patient care documentation. Dictation includes but not limited to operative reports, discharge summaries, patient history and physical examinations, ED admits and discharges, rehabilitation, diagnostic tests, and other related information of a confidential nature.

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, signs and symptoms, medications and laboratory values are required, as well as in-depth or broad knowledge of a specialty (or specialties). Knowledge of medical transcription guidelines, practices, and the use of excellent English grammar, punctuation, and style.

I have just finished my first semester of an associate degree nursing program. I cannot even begin to count up all the times where I knew the implications of a lab value and what the normal range was, or the indications for a drug and the usual dosages, or why a certain surgery was performed, the steps involved, the equipment, etc. - all because being an MT has given me that knowledge. Unskilled...my backside.

I think you guys missed the point. Less skilled just means you don't need a high level of education or training when compared to something like a chemist or say a teacher

No, I didn't miss the point. - Got it.

[ In Reply To ..]
I have an education and was trained by seasoned MTs. Don't know what you mean. MTs who aren't educated and aren't trained properly may be one of the reasons our pay has dropped. The any idiot can do it mentality.

Bad PR doesn't help any of us.

Hi again,

I just want to clarify a few things. The term "less-skilled" labor is used by economists regularly on both sides of the political aisle. It doesn't necessarily mean a job is easy or less valuable to society. It simply means that in order to get a "less skilled" labor job you do not need a high degree of training in a specific field. For example, there (to my knowledge) are either very few programs in colleges nation wide for training in MT or there are none. Despite this, MTs are important in the medical field and perform a necessary function. In order to get a job as a MT you can have a BA/BS degree in just about any field, or just a HS diploma, and be able to perform the work this job entails with perhaps a few/several months of training by experienced/seasoned MTs. This doesn't mean being an MT is easy or unimportant by any means. "Less skilled" simply describes the amount of time and money someone put into their training for a given employment.

As an example on the other end, college professors are highly skilled, not because they are intelligent or something to that effect but rather due to the fact that they trained for that position for 4 years in undergrad, ~5 years for a PhD and then another several years in a postdoctoral position before finally getting a job as an untenured professor.
Training - Sick and Tired
[ In Reply To ..]
I was trained as an MT in a hospital setting in the early 1970s. I was the last trainee at that hospital. I had just finished a medical terminology course, was a fast typist, and had some experience using their equipment, so they hired me even though they needed to "train" me. At that time, it was estimated that training an MT cost a facility between $15,000 and $20,000 per year. The hope was that the person would not leave for a position elsewhere after the facility had invested time and money to train them.

I don't know what colleges that have MT programs or what private schools charge for their training courses, but our knowledge of medicine and healthcare should not be devalued as it currently is by paying such low wages.
Third Point - Gerri
[ In Reply To ..]
Most of the MTs I've known have trained on the job. But they are usually highly intelligent individuals if they make it. Some jobs require just a certificate or diploma, but the individuals are not necessarily extremely intelligent. MTs are very smart people and they also have to be cut out for this type work. It is not easy work and it's not for everyone, but it is a worthwhile career. You have to love it to stay with it.

I Am So PISSED... Seeing RED

I am getting all the crappy dictators, all the crappy work types. Besides the point that we have been on Mandatory overtime for God knows how long, they allow the overtimers to choose their worktype, choose their account, so when you get on for your regular shift, all there is that is left is crap, crap, crap, can hardly make lines. Per Diems can pick and choose. I get these crappy reports that are out of turn around time because they have been skipped over. I am pisssssssssed to the max. Oh a ...

Now, before anyone flames away, I was hired by the Q several months ago as a tier 3.  I pull my weight, work my shift, and don't have too much to complain about except for NJA from time to time. When I was hired, they asked me specifically what specialties I like the most and what I like the least.  I was told that if there was a specialty that I really disliked or didn't have as much experience ...

Fluency "upgrade" is.  They spent how much money paying the techs to work on it & then paying all of us to train so that the spellcheck can now be inconveniently located on the left rather than floating and it now takes twice as long to upload a report because we basically have to go through 2 upload cycles...?  Yet we still don't have the fuzzy physician search fixed or the question marks by the physician names in the ADT, or control-arrow moving to the end of the word instea ...

Where The Finger Should Point
Jul 20, 2011

So much ire and angst pointed at MTSOs.  I even read where the TAT is a marketing ploy :)   It helps to remember that we're all in the same boat and for the same reasons, to support ourselves. What so many of you don't seem to get is that the INSURANCE industry is dictating much of the TAT.  If reports aren't on a chart in xxx time then the facility/physician is dinged financially. If an MTSO doesn't meet TAT, they are dinged financially.  So they a ...

0.5 Point Taken Off For Blanks SM
Apr 11, 2013

I just looked at my review for March and I see all these 0.5 deductions for "blank filled in by reviewer."  There are also Valid Blanks that take off no points.   Sorry if this has been asked but did they say they were going to do this?  And if so, when?  Also, I listened to these blanks.  There is no way they can tell me 100% what was said in any of them, which is why I blanked them.  So they are guessing.  Two reports I have gone through so far are for real ...
