Standing up while working - mimt

Posted: Jul 05, 2013

Anyone out there stand while working? I am thinking about having my husband build a platform/raised desk so I can stand while I work. I'm so tired of my leg and feet falling asleep as soon as I sit down and start using the foot pedal. I'm wondering how hard it is to stand and use the foot pedal.

Standing up while working. sm - I tried it a few times.

Working the foot pedal was easy. Used a block of wood under my heel and switched feet every so often. The problem was with the static leg. Couldn't walk in place, so other than bending at the knee, there was not much I could think of to do with it but keep it straight and hold me up, so after a while the hip and knee would start to ache. The best idea I came up with so far is using a bar stool to sit/lean on, but would love to hear any ideas on standing and working. BTW, learning hand controls to replace the foot pedal would be ideal, but I have tried several times and this old dog just cannot learn that trick.

Never thought of the problems with standing either... - mimt

I didn't even think of the other leg standing and the problems that would cause. ugh! I've tried to learn the hand shortcuts too and just can't make them work either. I'll have to try a barstool type set up. I swear, the very second I sit in a work chair, even if I switch the chairs, within minutes my butt is numb and all the way down my leg is numb. It can't be good to have that happen for 8 hours a day!

Using keyboard controls - instead of foot pedal

[ In Reply To ..]
I was a FIRM believer that I couldn't learn the keyboard controls instead of the foot pedal. Gave up. Then, one day when work was slow, I looked up 2 of them. Alt+1 to decrease speed, Alt+2 to increase speed. I tried to concentrate and make myself use just those 2, just that night. Then, another the next night (I chose Alt+A (play) and Alt+P (pause). The play and pause function? They were the HARDEST to learn because they made me anxious just in using them and I kept trying to "keep up" with the voice instead of simply pressing Alt+P to pause it. Once I became comfortable with those, I REALLY felt the freedom from the foot pedal. It was like driving a car with cruise control.

I have tried the keyboard controls several times and quit several times. Don't be afraid to try it again. Hope this helps! :-)

Try this first - too old

I almost bought a nice stand-up station. But before investing, I took some of my medical books and propped them up under my keyboard to where I felt comfortable typing, and I raised my monitor. It was great ... for about five minutes. I immediately felt pain down my left leg from standing. I tried switching the foot pedal to under my left foot, and my right leg started hurting. I even put my foot pedal on a large wooden block.

Was so glad I "tested" it before buying the stand-up station and redoing my whole office. But it could be I'm just too old!

I actually bought a desk that would raise and lower at the touch of a button. I figured when I got tired of sitting I could stand and vice versa. But like you, after about 5 minutes my left foot started getting sore from having to bear all my weight. I even tried standing on a little pillow but that only helped for a few minutes. I think the bar stool idea might work, though, like the other poster mentioned, because your weight isn't all on that one foot. If I still had that adjustable desk set up, I would try that, but it's collecting dust in my basement. For now, I just find reasons to get up & move around every hour or so.

The bar stool worked for me, too - Zenaida

I use a bar stool and a foot stool under the pedal when I want to sit. Stand for a while, sit for a while, switch back and forth from left to right foot. Really relieves the stress of staying in one position for too long.
Oh, like your foot stool idea. - I tried it a few times.

I have not used the bar stool in a while because of having to switch the keyboard and foot pedals from chair to bar stool. Thanks to your suggestion, I will give it another try.

Over the years... - sm

...I've tried numerous things. Once I tried sitting on an exercise ball. It was kinda fun and bouncy, and maintaining balance probably strengthened core muscles, but the foot pedal was problematic. I also tried one of those orthopedic "kneeling" chairs. A GREAT idea for the back and arms, but you have to put all your weight on one knee (though you can switch knees periodically). Having to extend one leg to operate the foot pedal defeats the purpose, though, because it causes asymmetry and forces you to compromise posture to accommodate.

The foot pedal is the source of the problem. I've always wanted to walk on a treadmill while working! The problem? The foot pedal. I've always wondered if there were some way to use one's jaw or elbows to operate the foot pedal.

An untried idea... - please sm

I want to mount the foot pedal upside down under my woodworker's bench, and operate it with my knee. If I keep alternating sides, it might be like marching in place. Might sound silly, but I would probably get a pretty good workout. Just have not had the time to try it out yet.

You have no doubt heard of those Last Man Standing groups, where a group of people, such as survivors of a disaster, get together and each make a contribution which then goes to the last living member the group. I propose 4/1/2014 all mmodal US MTs contribute $10- for lottery tickets to go the very last US MT that mmodal has left after all the 99.7% firings. Standing Desk
Apr 23, 2012

Has anyone tried a stand-up desk or just tried to stand while typing?  With all the stuff in the news lately about how dangerous sitting is, I would like to give it a try.  Just wondering if anyone has been doing it and has any tips.  It seems like it would be a little hard on the legs when trying to stand and use the footpedal. I have seen some new treadmill desks that look awesome, but obviously wouldn't work for us using footpedals. ...
