Retraining through unemployment? - MT

Wondering if any long-term MTs are out there that have had problems since going to SR have gotten fired and qualified for retraining through unemployment? In the 14 years I was a MT before SR my quality was never below 99%, always well above required lines. I guess I just cannot read as well as I can type. I have even seen my doctor, who says that since reading uses a different part of the brain than typing, it's possible that I have had ADD and was never bothered until this. I just got another QA score of 98%, wondering what to do if I get fired. I have been applying for jobs in medical, reception, billing, etc., out of medical, can't even get a interview... no one needs a transcriptionist.

into the position of having to just sit and read along all day, instead of actually creating the document, quite a few things come into play that they fail to take into consideration when they tell us we must have 99.3%-plus accuracy in our editing, and do a minimum of 250 lines per minute.

One is that, as the other poster stated, reading uses a different part of the brain than listening and typing.

Two, there is a built-in neurological reaction we all have when reading, where we tend to see correct words where sometimes they aren't. Ever see that popular paragraph, often posted in offices for fun, to the effect of: "If yuo can raed thsi," etc.? It illustrates that function of our brain that tends to read mostly using the first and last letters of words, and then unscrambling what's in the middle so it comes out right. I think that must start to happen once we've learned to read entire words, rather than sounding out eat letter, like we did as small children. And I would imagine that dyslexia is a dysfunction of that ability.

That ability makes it possible for us to read well and quickly, but it stabs us in the back if we're trying to edit.

Three, because of what we're paid, and our "quotas", we're all trying to do this as fast as humanly possible, just to survive. Our company tells us to run the dictation at top speed, which of course just makes the problem worse, in terms of accuracy.

And four, let's face it - just sitting there watching a little cursor and listening to a mumbling, gum-chewing doctor or PA try to dictate the report, it's monumentally boring. I know for a fact that some of the things I'm missing in some reports that I get dinged for are because I fell asleep for a nanosecond.

I'm having the same problem with job-hunting. No one seems to want a transcriptionist's skills anymore. They don't see that our abilities could easily be retrained and redirected. But no, from receptionists to DMV clerks, they all want "plug-in employees" that have experience in that particular niche, and nothing that's even slightly different, in the way of experience.

Wondering....was forced to change from statutory employee to IC status with federal ID number instead of SS# when MDI-MD was rolled into Transcend. Start getting paperwork documentation in order NOW. Here's hoping you don't need it, but you will be that much further ahead if you do. Even if you're not at risk of being fired, laid off could be possible and you would still need this. It could be at least 21 days from the time the question arose, before you receive an answer about benefits. If your case is complicated in any way, it will take longer. So much fun filing for partial unemployment. Have to send in weekly gross wages, which MMODAL say they can't let me know that until 3 days before payday, which does not work, as I have to report WEEKLY or I lose benefits for that one week. Just have to guesstimate what I earned by line counts straight and VR, but can't figure shift differential or what they screw you out of if you send too many QAs. YES!!!!!!!! Ladies and gentlemen there IS hope! Because my employer dictated my hours per week, per day and the time I was to work unemployment considered that to be an employee status and NOT IC even though they didn't pay my taxes. This was the decision made after my prior employer appealed my unemployment benefits from them. beyond smarmy, they terminated the part time MTs because when they apply for unemployment (and they are without question able to get it because their jobs were eliminated) they will find the govt will document the last five quarters of their employment and base their rate of pay on a percentage of that.
