Resumes from an MTSO perspective? - yochana

Posted: Sep 02, 2011

I know MTSOs are inundated with resumes, so what catches your eye and what turns you off?  Do you really want to know all the places I have worked?  Or would you rather have a brief resume stating only my years of experience, field of experience, etc.?  What I am best at, etc.  Would appreciate a recruiter's input.

Last time I answered a post like this people complained about the reasons I gave to dismiss a resume, but you asked. I'm not a recruiter but I have filtered resumes before for a small MTSO who has advertised for MTs on here before and got overwhelmed with the amount of resumes and needed some help narrowing it down.

I read someone here once say put your full name in the subject line, like Jane Doe's Resume. I wouldn't have thought of that but I admit it does make it stand out in a stack of emails and it's easy to find if you want to go back and take a second look and happen to remember the name.

When I was filtering resumes for an IC position any got tossed out that had typos, large gap of time since last job (do you really *need* to work?), long drama life story in the email, stating that you are looking for a position that wasn't advertised such as a management job, showing that at your current job you make 11 cpl but we're advertising 8 cpl, and the one that people get mad at me for - lots of job hopping. I'm sorry that you have picked lots of bad MTSOs and left after a month, but job hopping is a red flag in ANY industry. The other thing I can think of off hand is showing multiple current jobs. If you already work two or three jobs when are you going to make time for my IC work?

So I'd say attach a resume (unless they specifically say don't) and write a brief summary email about your background, what you are looking for, and what you can bring to the table. If you feel like something in your resume needs to be explained (like a big gap in employment), briefly explain it in the email. Then spellcheck both the resume and the email. Oh, and keep the resume formatted clean. It's so hard to read a poorly organized resume. Lots of samples out there on the internet to follow if you need help.

Good luck with your search! It used to be so quick and easy to get an MT job if you had experience and I know it's not like that any more.

I understand that job hopping can raise red flags. What do you do, though, if you had the "bad luck" of choosing to work for several MTSOs that lost the account you were hired for and have no new/other account to put you on?

Thank you, very good pointers, but to MTSOs before...... - Yochana

you toss out the resumes due to so called job hopping....remember many times this is NOT our fault. As the below posters stated, many times we lose our job due to our accounts being lost. Many years ago when I only had dialup I signed on with a MTSO that assured me their platform worked for dialup...it did not and I had to leave within 4 weeks. Several years' back I found my dream job and knew I would retire from this MTSO, alas within a year's time...they sold out to an Indian company (Not MQ) and I was forced to find another job. In this day and time, including other professions I don't believe job hopping is as much of a red flag as it used to be. There is NO company loyalty and that also is true between employer to employee loyalty. A company will dump their employees at a drop of a hat nowdays.
I know a recruiter's time is limited to sort through resumes and just wanted to know what were the most eye-catching details that "catches" your attention. I do agree that correct spelling and an easy to read format is very important.
Thank you for replying.

What a GREAT question! I'd sure like to know - the answers, too! - Meerkat

Perspective
Feb 11, 2010

I occasionally come here, and I read the posts, and I can't help but wonder of course, what is going on with Medquist, and with other companies, and with U.S. MT's having their boats rocked about outsourcing and all these other things we're dealing with every day. Here are some things to consider (and I'm trying to be objective and somewhat helpful here because I'm in the same boat the rest of y'all are): 1. If you wear a clothing item that says "made in China," t ...

MT Perspective
Apr 10, 2010

Most of you have them figured out.  I was in the last wave in 2005 when they closed our location and dumped us into the system with poor audio, inaccessible supervisors, knowing those of us who were making a decent line rate would eventually bow out.  I truly believe the industry has reduced the MT to the role of at-home slave.  So sad.  You know, it is the patients who ultimately suffer because of the greed of investors who derive their sumptuous subsistence off the swe ...

Here Is Some Perspective. Sm
Oct 14, 2010

MTs have unfortuantely lost their jobs in the recent months and work is slowing down across the board.  That does not viilfy the MTSO.  It's part of a much bigger picture. MTs tend to live in their own microcosmic world.  We are not the only ones impacted by the slow economy, bad housing market, downturn in census at healthcare facilities and company layoffs. Take a look at DailyJobCuts.com ...

Imedix -- From A QA Perspective
Nov 24, 2014

I can totally understand why people are upset.  I was hired as QA.  The account that I was on was a major hospital system     blanks that I could easily understand. However, there were times when I just had to leave a blank.  We were instructed to "ding" the MT as much as possible and the rules we followed were as per Nuance guidelines.  Even as a QA, we had audits from upper management.  I was terminated because my quality score fell below 98%.  I felt fo ...

IC And Resumes
May 05, 2012

I am sure this has been brought up before but I found nothing recently in archives. If you are considered an IC (a true IC) and you are asked to submit a resume when trying to get a position - do you list the companies you transcribed for on your resume or do you set it up as if you were self employed? I guess what I am asking is since being an IC means you technically did not work for that company (you worked for yourself) do you still list the companies you were transcribing for? ...

Resumes
Oct 08, 2014

Just curious.  With over 9000 resumes posted, has anyone gotten a response because their resume is in the bank?  It seems unlikely that once you're name is off the main page, someone looking to fill a position will not look much further than that.    ...

To Those Who Have Sent Out Resumes
Dec 13, 2014

Looking for a consensus of opinion here... When sending off your resume, do you include your home address, or will just your name, phone number and email suffice? I have the same question regarding the cover letter. Do you include your home address, or will just your name, phone number and email suffice? I feel kind of nervous about sending ALL that information, but I really don't know the standard anymore. It's been a looooong time since I've had a resume. TYIA. ...

Jobs/resumes
Sep 16, 2010

Just wondering how many MTs have posted on the job seeker's board and heard back from any of the companies you have applied for?  I have 25+ years experience so I'm hoping that is not the problem.  I have sent numerous resumes, but have yet to hear back from any of them.  ...

I Have Sent Out About 5 Resumes In The Last 2 Weeks - Sm
Oct 10, 2010

I have heard not one word.  No calls, no e-mails, nothing.  I am a CMT with over 25 years of experience, experience in every specialty, huge hospitals, etc.  Am I too experienced and do they think I would want too much money?  Why wouldn't they at least ask?  I used to get a phone call immediately upon sending a resume.  Nowadays, nothing.  I'm amazed that these companies are not looking for good help.  ...

To BusyMT Below - Re Resumes - Sm
Feb 01, 2011

I heartily disagree with what you wrote.  I used to receive responses to my resume immediately if not sooner upon applying.  No more.  I often applied, like you, just to see what responses I'd get.  Never, before or now, would anyone negotiate.  It was what it was and if you dared to ask if they had a higher rate, they acted offended.  My resume is impeccable, straightforward, easy to read, 1 page, pertinent information right there for all to see.  I have ...

Response To Resumes
Feb 04, 2011

Yeah for sure.  what goes does it do to send resumes to these jobs posted here, when you get NO response...  I realize they have more resumes than they can probably go through, but when they look at the top of your resume (where it should be) and see you have had over 25 years experience - you think they'd contact you first, yeah whatever.  Not sure, but know MT jobs are scarce!! ...

How Many Resumes Have You Sent This Week?
May 19, 2011

I have sent out 9 resumes this week and have not heard back from one of them yet.  I sent 5 last week and have not heard from them either.  I need to be working.  I cannot sit in front of my email waiting day in and day out for someone to send me a test, tell me they filled the position, or that they want to hire me.  Why can't the MT companies just send us an email telling us one way or the other that they want us or don't want us.  Its really frustrating.&nbs ...

Resumes - Experience
Feb 11, 2012

Resumes, Job Requirements, Etc
Feb 21, 2012

From a Forbes magazine article:   The only three true job interview questions are: 1.  Can you do the job? 2.  Will you love the job? 3.  Can we tolerate working with you? That’s it.  Those three.  Think back, every question you’ve ever posed to others or had asked of you in a job interview is a subset of a deeper in-depth follow-up to one of these 3 key questions.  Each question potentially may be asked using different words, but every ...

Re: No Response To Job Applications, Resumes Sent:
Feb 24, 2010

I've sent out a few resumes over the past year in hopes of landing a different MT job than the one I have now.  Only ONE place (a hospital I would dearly love to work for!) even acknowledged my application.  The others?  NOTHING.  Even though they continued to run ads for the same job I had applied for.  I never even got to test for any of them. So.... fast forward a few months (or years).  Suppose one of these no-response companies kept my resume and out ...

Two Questions Re Precyse And Resumes / Sm
Jun 04, 2012

Any current info or opinions about Precyse from anyone who works for them now or has recently - how is pay,QA, platform, flexibility, work available, etc?  I've read the archives but looking for recent info.  What attracted me to them is that they provide equipment which would be a plus for me, but are there negatives that would outweigh this? Also, has anyone ever had any luck sending out resumes cold - not in response to job posting, just sending to a company?  There ...

I Have Sent My Resumes To 10 Different Companies And Hear Back Nothing, Nada . . . . .
Apr 13, 2010

I have been doing MT for almost 15 years, and the one company I have been with for the past 9 years is suddenly getting less and less work.  I have been sending out resumes, taking the tests, etc., and I don't hear ONE THING BACK from any of them  . . . . so frustrating.  We are in the process of buying a new house and then this happens - I may have to take a job outside of home, but I wan't to be here for my kids:( ...

My New MTSO
Oct 04, 2010

Hi, I hope this is the right forum to post this on. I have a few questions pertaining to my new MTSO business. Any input or advice would be helpful. First of all, I need help with pricing. I charge my clients .12 per 65 character line. I believe that is the going rate for my area. I am wondering what to pay my transcriptionists and editors. I originally thought to pay my transcriptionists .08 per 65 character line and my editors .04 per 65 character line but then I wouldn't be making any pr ...

MTSO

If I owned a MTSO company, and if I were monitoring this board in order to glean comments made about my company, and if I were unhappy with what I read, I would do the following:  I would send a company-wide e-mail to my people asking for their input on what I could do to make things better for them and correct the problems aired on this board.   I would realize that there are companies that would make life difficult for MTs who dare to complain about an injustice and that they ne ...
