Re-entering medical transcription - Kat
Posted: Mar 01, 2013
How do you re-enter the medical transcription field? Are there any brush up courses online? What is the average pay per line? Any help would be appreciated. Kat
varies, but I think this is about the average right now - Des

4 cpl for VR/speech recognition
8 cpl for straight typing
You should also note that about 95% of your work will be VR, and you very likely will run out of work often. Also see the post below this one about average line counts.
Line counts vary so widely with VR because of the quality of VR. Not all VR software is the same. Some VR is really bad and is much faster just to straight type, but you're still getting 4 cpl for the work.

Don't do it. No money in it now unless you want 3 cents a line for editing or 5 cents a line for straight speech wreck. Quite a few of us make just min wage now. Happen to live in a state where min wage is higher. Make more working my second job as a checker in a grocery store.

Good advice, and exactly what I would say (have been an MT since 1991), but you will undoubtedly get a lot of hits calling you "mean" and "sarcastic" from folks who yelp when you tell the truth about our industry. I surely would not recommend it to anybody these days.
And as a checker - sm

in grocery store, do they tell you to run and clock out when there is no one in line and then run and clock in when someone gets in line? or send you home and then call you to come back and clock in when there is a line? Just kidding, sort of...
Leaving MT - Hopefully

That is the biggest reason I am leaving MT and training for another career. In the 5 years I have been an MT, I have never been able to find a job that had consistent work flow, from IC to employee status. I just am not willing to sit at the computer for 12 hours to get 8 hours of work. My current situation pays hourly, $16 an hour, but it does not pay for time spent waiting for work. You have to clock out when work runs out, clock in when actively typing, etc. It is an IC position, so we have no set schedule, but it still takes forever to accumulate hours this way when the work dribbles in every 15 minutes or so. The great advantage to being paid hourly while actively typing, however, is we are no longer financially penalized for difficult dictation, poor dictators, ESLs, and filling in headers and footers, although we do have to maintain minimum LPH. I would have a great job except that there is just not enough work and the work flow is so inconsistent. It's a great job for pin money, though.
Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe? I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before. The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...
I would like to re-enter medical transcription field after 4 years of retirement. Any suggestions on how and what to do to re-enter. Is there a short review course that could be helpful? ...
Hello, need help with entering Qcare ticket for NJA. Entered one and was told I entered it incorrectly and had to redo it. I had the following:

I have been here with MQ 4ever it seems. Today, I just need to rant. It seems that for the last week or so ASR has gotten WORSE, leaving out words and still not changing terms which have been repeatedly "corrected" by me. It is not "learning". Of course, I guess this means job security.
But, the next rant I have is how many ways can someone enter a docs credentials and initials in? Constantly leaving out the periods after the middle initials ...
I need help and need to know how you all enter your time in TimeSaver. I was told to only enter the time you are actually typing or editing and do not enter the time you are researching or reading work emails, etc., only when your "hands are on the keyboard". So, this obviously won't equal to 8 hours a day just by entering this time, so how do they figure in that we are full-time employees this way?
If I only enter 5 or 6 hours a day instead of 8 then they can ...
Does this sound right. The doctor says "Using an arrow and s/l including a dart device, the radial artery was entered, and a wire was advanced..." Thanks for helping!! ...
After years of thinking about going back to school and then talking myself out of it because I didn't want to face college again at age 40, I decided I need more job security, better pay and growth potential. So I filled out the financial aid forms, enrolled in a couple of classes for the summer, and here I go. I'm a little nervous actually. Been a loooooonnng while since I sat in a classroom, took notes, and took exams. My retention isn't wh ...

A legal contact was inquiring about the connection of medical mistakes related to off-shored transcription mistakes. I have told him to review these boards and hopefully he will benefit from the information here.
While he did not discuss the exact case, I think that he will be able to use the off-shore transcription issue to his client's benefit or at least highlight that the provider in question does not have as rigorous control on processing records as other pr ...

Does anyone know if the Virtual Learning Center still exists? I am not getting any responses to emails to them. The website has changed since the last time I looked at it. Also, I thought they were supposed to be the third best of the top three medical transcription companies to learn from. If they are not, who is? ...

I answered an ad for U.S. Transcription posted on MT Jobs, was asked to test, and within an hour of submitting my test I was offered a job. After my heart came down from a happy dance at an actual job offer, I found I really have some things to think about before I say yes.
This would be for 2nd shift, non-medical transcription at 0.06/cpl for straight transcription, 0.03/cpl if a company provided template is used. I suppose I need to ask what my expected production would be before ...
I am looking into the Medical Transcription field but wanted to get info about the field from those that are in it before I take the plunge. I'm not looking at earning a huge salary or medical benefits etc, just some extra to help the HH income. I'm looking at Career Step for my certificate. Any factual info or career experience would be appreciated. ...
I'm fairly new to medical transcription. I received my certification in 2010 and was a little discouraged when applying for jobs and they were all looking for experienced agents to work from home. I've recently decided to start back looking for work and decided to offer my services free of charge just to get the experience so I can apply in a year or two for actual paying work. Has anyone else done this or know how to get started? Or even know someone who needs a transcription intern? ...
Has anyone heard of USA Medical Transcription, Inc?? I can't find a website for them although when I do a reverse (fax) number look-up, it says it's in Palm Beach, FL. Info is appreciated! ...
Anyone ever do non-medical transcription? I'm interested to know if you liked it. I tried it for a few days and just decided it wasn't for me. A lot of it was phone conversations and was very hard to understand and I ended up leaving lots of blanks. The pay was bad too and I gave it up today. It was like torture to me to sit and listen to this voice file and one was almost 2 hours long that I did not finish before I quit. Appreciate anyone's input into this. I am feeling ba ...
I'm a 2011 MT grad who posted not long ago looking for advice. While googling MT companies to apply to, I found some non-medical transcription services, namely one that transcribes dialogue from a video for production/entertainment companies. This site had instructions and a download to take the test. What the heck, I'm going to take it and see what happens. Since MT is practically a dead-end career, I've been trying to come up with ther ways to utilize my ...
I having been checking out various things lately with regards to where I would like to go job wise in the near future. I started out going to school for nursing and completed all the pre-reqs: Anatomy and Physiology I & II, biology, psychiatry, basic nutrition, algebra and English etc.

I WANT out. I have applied for numerous jobs, what I do, I just want to hit a time cloc just to have something to get out. I don't carek. I am so tired of being stressed and the happy days, when I have tons of work, just to be hit the next day with zero work, and stress on my off days that maybe I should log in and "catch up".

I quit a job a dozen years ago to jump into the "Work At Home" dream. I had little money, was quite naive, worked from dark to dark with absolutely no help from the small MTSO, who later ripped me off $5,000. BUT, I learned.
After my first experience with "running out of work", I just found more work. I got unusually lucky and found a job and was MTing again in a few days. That gig gave me nearly 10 years of working for another small MTSO. I got busy and made tons of mon ...
