Question about working for local physician - (sm) - liz

Posted: May 31, 2011

I just have a question for anyone who works for a local physician.  I work FT for an MTSO.  A local doctor asked me last year if I would transcribe for him while his MT was on vacation.  I said yes and I go there next week to train.  My problem is, I don't know what to charge him.  His assistant mentioned it to me on the phone and i said I would tell her when I come to the office next week.  Does anyone who transcribes for a local doc get paid by the hour?  I'm thinking he pays by the hour but I get paid by the line so I'm not sure what to charge them.  I just wanted to get some idea of what MTs make per hour if they work for a local MD.  When I made arrangements for this last year, I said I would work in the office.  But I now have several accounts where I work and have regularly scheduled hours, so I'll be bringing his work home with me to do at night.

TIA

I have two local accounts - sm

One is a single practitioner. I charge him $5 per page, regardless of how much or little is on the page.

The other is a speciality clinic with eight physicians. I charge them .15 cents per 55-character line including spaces, and count the lines using Sylcount software.

I have never charged by the hour. The only time I got paid by the hour was when I was an employee and worked in the office. As an IC, my fees have always been production based.

Depending on how good and fast you are, being paid by the hour will be great for you and not for him, or vice versa.

pretty much the same here . . . - sm

the previous poster pretty much sums it up for me also. i charge my doc 15 cents a line and work a m-w-f type of schedule for him. i invoice him monthly for the previous month. we have worked well together for a while now and the office calls when they have a stat or need some patient info, otherwise on the days above, pick up/drop off. we give each other 2 weeks notice for time off/vacations. no printing, no tapes, just type, type, type. good luck!!!!

Thank you both for your replies (sm) - liz

I'm not sure he pays by the hour, but when I told the office manager that I get paid by the line in my regular job, she just kind of looked at me funny. So I'm sure I'll find out June 7th. I wish I could just ditch my MTSO and do nothing but local work. I'm just going to fill in for his MT four times this year, starting next month. Thanks again for your info! At least I have some idea now.

another way - Ayn

Just to add another way of being paid - I do state disability review reports for a local doc 3 days a week. He drops off/picks up the tapes off at my house, I email him the reports. I am paid $10 per report, regardless of how short/long the report is. Because it is all pretty much a template with patient specifics thrown in, this works out very well to my advantage -- averaging $30/hour. Not sure if that helps you/answers your question as you were asking about hourly rates, but best of luck with your position!

Yes, it did help. I just had no idea what to tell them because I have only worked for hospitals (paid hourly) and for MTSOs (paid by line). Now at least I have some idea what to tell them. Thanks for your response!

why not just ask what they are paying the original girl and chg same? - mt3

Get your foot in the door this year that way and reevaluate if this turns into more work or permanent work. You get to really see what this job involvews and gives you time to watch the market, while he keeps paying as usual with no surprises.

I thought about that..(sm) - liz

I'll probably just ask the girl while I'm training how he pays her but don't want to come right out and ask what she makes. I don't think this job will turn into anything but temp help. It's my OB/GYN and they asked me last year if I would do this. He's had the same girl for years and he is in his early 60s so I don't even know how long he will work. I would just love to work for someone local and get out of my MTSO job, so maybe it will lead to something with another doc or back to the hospital I used to work for.

Dec 28, 2011

In telling my woes to my mom about all the changes at the Web, she of course told others. So I received a call from my "local" hospital's transcription supervisor. They have just created two new positions they are looking to fill. The pay offered is 15.45 an hour plus 15% shift differential for anything after 2 pm. The insurance is awesome, significantly less than what I will be paying for a single policy and available after 30 days of employment. Paid time off of 21 days per year for ...

Local Area Switching To VR
Mar 13, 2012

I have always worked for local hospitals and doctor's offices.  I have never worked through a company, but with most of our local area switching to VR I am having to look to companies for work.  In our local area our transcriptionists usually are paid about 12 cents per line,  but I am noticing most companies pay is substantially lower as i saw an ad for Sten Tel paying only 5-6 cpl.   Could anyone tell me what the norm is for pay with companies?  Thanks for all help. ...

Associated Or Associative Physician

PSA: Consulting Physician

I admit, this is a huge pet peeve of mine.  The consulting physician is the one who goes to see the patient at the request of the REFERRING physician.  I wish I could get some docs to read this and state the difference.  If I was typing, I could just correct it right away but I have to correct it on the VR.  ...

Just A Message From A Physician
May 21, 2015

Hello everyone and sorry to intrude. I just wanted to say thank you. I'm a hospitalist physician and I dictate daily. I would say about 10% of my dictations contain a "_______" that needs to be corrected, maybe less...and I am someone who mutters a LOT. So I'm surprised it's not a much higher percentage. And when I hear some of my fellow internationally-born docs dictate, I'm amazed that ANYONE, let alone someone over the phone, would be able to understand what this person i ...
