Local hospital offer - Ex web soon?
Posted: Dec 28, 2011
In telling my woes to my mom about all the changes at the Web, she of course told others. So I received a call from my "local" hospital's transcription supervisor. They have just created two new positions they are looking to fill. The pay offered is 15.45 an hour plus 15% shift differential for anything after 2 pm.
The insurance is awesome, significantly less than what I will be paying for a single policy and available after 30 days of employment. Paid time off of 21 days per year for new hires (accumulated per pay period). Matching 401k after one year and a pension plan after 3 years.
Best of all? Once you are trained, they send you home with company equipment.
I went to talk to them and was offered a job on the spot due to my experience and testing for them.
The only thing holding me back is that it is second shift....though it is Monday through Friday. I currently work Monday through Friday with only 2 days of second shift.
It seems like an answer to prayers with the frustration of pay cuts and not being recognized for any years of service, having my paid time off cut, and losing true holiday pay. Not to mention the truly crappy insurance. I also believe the job security is better. They are currently outsourcing overflow and want to stop that. Irate the thought of being the newest person in a department again, but I just don't see how I can turn it down.

I went from W to my local hospital (well 45 minutes away) nearly 3 years ago under relatively the same conditions. New kid on the block, had to work in house for 6 months but then came home with company equipment. I also am working second shift. Everyone has to go in on second shift and first shift is by attrition and seniority. Only problem is no one quits! However, the security, perks, and the almost never NJA makes it all worthwhile. I would say go for it! I don't regret it at all.

Would take it in a heart beat. You are working 2 second shifts now, so you know the routine. However, with WebNu cutting out shift differential I bet more and more people will be squeezing their hours in on day shift and forcing the rest of us to work later in the day to get our hours in. Can't blame people. Why work the less desirable shifts for NOTHING. Good luck with your choice. Sounds like it would be a dream come true for most of us.

You can get errands done in the morning or sleep in. You can DVR your favorite shows and use them as your donkey carrot to watch at the end of your shift. It sounds like a nice package. This is a no-brainer in these times, but only you know what you can handle.

Another thing you might want to consider. I also have gotten a raise every year since I have been there! Don't know if your hospital would be the same, but a lot of what you have said mirrors my situation, so that might also be in the cards. We get paid hourly plus incentive for anything over 1100 lines a day.
Yes, In-House, but where? What state? You say local? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
This is what the job was for 50 years that the services and India have taken away. There is no in-house department any longer because of the $$$ and the cheap cuts. Cost effective for them to not care and send overseas. Where might I ask are you located where you say 'local' hospital? Nothing here locally and that is in the #1 medical school area.

I am in south central Kentucky. For me, because I live in such a rural area, local is 45 minutes away. But since I will be working from home eventually, the drive isn't a concern.
I asked the supervisor about the future of her dept. She stated they had no plans to outsource because (1) she believed it could be done cheaper in house. And (2) they want to offer their doctors a more personal level of service giving them access to the trans. dept.
Is anything guaranteed? Of course not. But I could easily lose the accounts I am on now and be laid off.
Besides, their policy is to attempt to place their employees in other positions if there is staff reduction and I have both MD office and medical records experience.
Just gave them a call back. - OP

My daughter is a junior this year, so I was worried about missing these last years of having her home. But the supervisor assured me she was flexible and easy to work with (my daughter plays volleyball and I didn't want to miss all her games in her senior year). I should be able to make all the home games for sure.
But I have to think about the big picture. I naively thought the webx would always stay the same, as I had hoped to move to another state in a couple of years. But it does no good to have a mobile job if it cant support me financially.
Thanks for the support.
Good luck! I hope it works out for you. :) nm - nostalgic

I used to have a job like that for 24 years until hospital did away with the whole MT Dept. I miss my excellent job. I would not hesitate to take the job even though it is second shift. Take it before it gets offered to someone else. At least you know what your regular pay per week is and excellent insurance. I work second shift now and I love it and when I need off supervisior is understanding and I just make it up. You will not regret taking the job. You are so lucky. Take the job and good luck. You will not regret it.

I agree!!! Grab it quick. I miss the hospital environment so much. Contact with other human beings. And you get to know all the doctors' voices so much better.
Go for it..and good luck!

I'm an ex employee of Spheris and WebMedx and back in May of 2011, I received a call from my local hospital and was offered a very similar deal as you have. I have always had the luxury of working early mornings at both MTSOs, but my pay was not so good. I was offered a position at my local hospital with a great hourly pay with shift differential, great benefits, generous PTO, incentive pay for anything over 1000 lines a day and yearly raises, but the only thing was I had to start on second shift which I was hesitant to do. I was told first shift is by seniority only, so when it was all said and done I decided to take the position and it was the best thing I have ever done for my family and I. I was also told I can work at home after 6 months, but I caught on so fast that they allowed me to go home with company equipment before I got my 90 days so that was big a plus. I'm still second shift (3 to 11:30), but I am able to sleep in as another person stated in this thread, exercise, take care of errands, go have lunch with family and friends, etc.
I'd take it in a heartbeat. - Meerkat

Once you're able to work at home, the evening shift won't be that bad, and if you still don't like it, maybe after you've been there a while, a different shift will open up, or someone will want to trade.
I don't think I would have to think twice about it. I believe - wannie

I would take it. Congratulations on the offer! Hope things work out well for you whatever your decision might be.
I would jump at it, but - keep asking about outsourcing
[ In Reply To ..]
That happened to me. I hated working for MQ for 5 yrs, a job came up at the hospital 7 miles away and I worked there for 8 years. Union job, great pay, benefits, I was so happy! Then they decided to outsource even though they told us it was the same cost. Knowing what I would face working for an MTSO and getting paid by the line (and half at that), I was laid off and am now on unemployment. Will be transitioning to coding. This is the second time I've worked for a hospital and they outsourced, so DO NOT want to experience that again!!! Good luck, take the job!
Would take it in a heart beat! - ladyT

Our local hospital pays $22 an hour and 5 weeks vacation, health/life insurance, etc., but we are in the DC area. I would take it in a second. Even if they do eventually oursource, you will have had that stability for that time, and would also qualify for unemployment, or move on to another position in the hospital.
Good to go! - OP

Well, I am set to start January 12. I gave my 2 weeks notice and my supervisor was very nice about it and told me she understood.
I wish I had a little time off between jobs as I am sure I won't get much time off this year. I also hope I get the remainder of my pto paid without any issues.
I will train on days for a couple/few weeks and then work 130 to 10 pm once I am home (I live near a time zone line and that is actually 230 to 11 for the hospital).
I'm looking forward to getting started. Thanks for all the kind words and well wishes! :-)

There are some personality types that are very timid and indecisive. They have to conduct an informal poll to see what everyone else thinks before doing anything.
MTs in particular seem to suffer from this. I have posted about the "herd mentality" amongst MTs before on the politics board, and several others who have witnessed it also chimed in as well.

Every situation is different of course, but working inhouse is not always utopia. In 2005 after 11-1/2 yrs with MQ and their BS I took an in hospital MT job in radiology with starting pay $21 an hour. WOW! I was ecstatic! However, 9 months later I quit and my co-worker quit right after me and they went through 3 more after that. The work conditions were awful; the pettiness with the *women club* and their basic corporate BS was too much and I went back home to work. I had to take a chance and find out, glad I did. Sometimes you just can't go back to the past.
