Question about LinkedIn profile... - please see message

Posted: Jun 01, 2012

Hi, All -- I'm a former MT who has decided to try for another type of employment.  Would still love being an MT if the right job was out there, but I'm done with working for an MTSO.

I'm not getting very far by applying to various companies on-line.  I've read someo things about how important it is for job-seekers to have a profile on LinkedIn; however, I'm wondering if that applies to people like me who don't have much to list there.  I don 't have a college degree--only an MT certificate from a vocational school.  I've been doing MT for so long that any other past employment skills would appear obsolete (being 20+ years ago).  I don't really see an employer seeking me out from my LinkedIn profile if I created one, but maybe I'm wrong.

Do any of you have LinkedIn profiles who have a background like mine?  When I see LinkedIn profiles, they appear to be for folks seeking a more-professional position....not the clerical or office-type jobs I'm searching.

Would appreciate any input you might have on this subject.  TIA!

If your only work and training experience - is related to MT

It is unlikely that you will be applying for the types of jobs where having a LinkedIn profile would be beneficial.

The most important thing for you is to have a resume that highlights the skills you have that would make you a good fit for the jobs you are seeking.

Is there a particular company or industry you are interested in working in? Tailor your resume to the job/company you want. Don't just rely on job postings you see online or in newspapers. Once you have identified companies you might want to work for, contact them directly. Many times even clerical jobs are not widely advertised and you might just luck into something you didn't know was available.

Are there job fairs in your area? Participate in as many as possible, and go well supplied with resumes.

Good luck. I hope you find the perfect job very soon.

Really appreciate this... - ....see message

Thank you so much for that thoughtful response. Your advice is very good, especially: "Once you have identified companies you might want to work for, contact them directly." That's something I hadn't even thought about doing.

I do have a lot of past experience doing other things besides MT...it's just been so long ago that most people say don't even list it on my resume. It's making it hard to show that you can do anything else, though.

Thanks for your kindness. Every bit of advice helps!

You're very welcome - I hope

your job search is successful very soon.

In your case, you might want to do a skill-based resume rather than listing your employment history. There are some websites that can show you various resume formats, just google something like "resume samples" and you should find lots of good ideas.

Since you are looking for clerical work, think of your MT skills in that light and describe your skills rather than job duties.

Take every opportunity to talk to people about your job search. You never know what might turn up. For example, if you take your car in for service, ask them if they have any clerical openings, that sort of thing.

Is there a community college or for-profit school nearby? They often have clerical/administrative job openings.

The main thing is not to confine your search to websites and classified ads. Everyone has access to those and you will be one of many applying to anything advertised there. Decide what you want to do, where you want to work, and seek out your own opportunities. You may contact a company on the day they decide they need to fill a position and get in before anyone else.

Asking directly is how I landed my part-time job. - Agree with you.

Took my cat to the veterinarian for vaccines and matter-of-factly asked the clerk if they needed part-time front desk help. He said yes, I talked to the vet that afternoon and started 3 days later. We all know the cliche: The worst they can do is say no.

Doesn't hurt to have one though.... - SH

It doesn't hurt to have a LinkedIn profile though, in my humble opinion. It's free and only takes a couple of seconds to make an account. It just kind of gives you a professional presence on the Internet.

I have a proud LinkedIn profile highlighting my credential, education, limited but growing employment history. It's the first result if by chance anyone searches Google for me! (;

Need Client Profile Help!
Dec 09, 2010

Ok, I just sign on for my shift and get a new account right away, plus it's OP reports, and I'm only a tier 2! Anyway, the CP says: Physicians Names Dictated: Transcribe as dictated using a header tag. Does this mean that anytime a physician's name is dictated I have to make it as a header? That doesn't make any sense to me. Help! ...

Client Profile.
Mar 24, 2014

I received a work type which has recently been changed over from a mandatory standard to headings. As I get shuffled around so many different accounts, so, of course I haven't seen this work type enough to remember where the body heading goes. So I inform my TSM of the deficiency that needs to be corrected as I spent considerable time checking past reports. I was very tempted to place the body heading in the wrong place to reinforce the deficient CP. I get an email stating I did the for ...

It's probably way too much to ask but would it kill them to set up the CPs the same way for each one? Like "qualified verbatim" in bold at the top, patient name in report, phys exam setup, ros setup, ADT instructions, etc.  The CP might just be the thing I despise the most. ...

Client Profile Errors Will Probably End My Career
Feb 28, 2014

I never get points taken off for the content of my reports, those are perfect quality.  What kills me are the FULL POINTS taken off for client profile errors.  One single client profile error (it doesn't matter WHAT it is) will fail an audit.  It only takes ONE to FAIL.  The problem I have with this is, there are soooooo many account profiles in my day and some of them (no joke) are a mile long with absolutely NO consistency to any of them.  One tiniest of details ...
